Even during the break, Trade Tech was a busy place. Hail to the conquering heroes! LA Trade Tech students captured 12 gold medals and 12 silver medals at the Skills USA state championships in San Diego. I can imagine the excitement as one student after another went up to the stage, to pick up their hardware at the medal stand. This is a tremendous accomplishment for our students and shows the real fortitude and drive that burns inside them. The quality of their effort should be inspiring to us all. Thanks again to the instructors who volunteer their time to guide these students and of course to Dean Joe Guerrieri who has coordinated our very successful return to Skills USA. All of our gold medalists are now eligible to compete in the Skills USA national championships in Louisville, Kentucky in June. There was also some excitement for one of our faculty who has really embraced the Skills USA competition as a way to motivate students and showcase our college. Construction technology instructor Tom Vessella was named Post Secondary Advisor of the Year for Region 3. Well deserved Tom! Also a very special thank you to our Foundation which provided the inancial support for these students to compete. Without you, accomplishing these dreams would not be possible. This past Saturday, our campus was the host of the massive Social Innovation Summit. It was a full day conference focusing on entrepreneurship and building your business. I saw some of our students in attendance getting some tips on putting their skills to work with start ups, business funding and

2 onday Morning April 13, 2015 regulations. There were some great success stories, and one of own LATTC adjunct instructor Artina McIntosh from our small business entrepreneurship program was among the conference speakers. The attendees also heard from Secretary of State Alex Padilla and my friend, former mayor of LA Antonio Villaraigosa. We know Trade Tech has been the training ground for numerous entrepreneurs. One of the great stories to come out of the event was the winner of the Big Idea Pitch contest. Trade Tech student, Jeni Thursday, won the competition. She is in Ms. McIntosh s class. With the win, comes a $500 scholarship. All in all, a very successful partnership event for Trade Tech. Also taking place this past week was the Codechella gathering. Not a concert, but a learning event. That was an interesting name created by Youth Build students who attended our annual webslam. This is an intense week long workshop for urban high school students looking at possible careers in information technology. Much of the online education focused on coding, one of the key skills in creating programs and websites, and by the time the week was over, these students had a solid foundation in coding and created some amazing websites for businesses. There was even a Saturday competition on the most useful, creative and functional website. There was also a visit from the person who leads the informational technology initiatives in the mayor s of ice. She was very impressed with the students and their work. The event was sponsored by two great organizations, Colocation America and Factual, both of which are committed to bringing

3 online skills to urban youth. And of course our Youth Build partners were so very helpful in bringing this core focus to our current cohort. Congratulations to Youth Build and Dean Joe Guerrieri and everyone involved. One of the areas where we are pushing for solid enrollment growth is among our neighborhood high schools. In addition to our work on Construction Day and college fairs, it is important that we have ongoing engagement of high school students who have easier transit access to Trade Tech. Given that push, I attended a parents college graduation at Santee High School this past Saturday where I was able to grab a real sense of what goes into the college decision for students and their parents. Our goal at LATTC is to help build a college going culture in our community and understanding parents is certainly part of that. I want to thank Milton Medina Torres and David Ysais for creating a nice high school outreach brochure both in English and Spanish. (please see attached) This week begins our late start classes, so please remind students that if they have enrolled in one of these classes, they need to attend the irst session (attached). iles/2015/04/spring2015 College.pdf We also have summer class schedule available online. Priority registration has started. iles/2015/04/summer2015_classschedule.pdf Also, students should know that the ASO elections are being held this week on Wednesday and Thursday. On Tuesday, there will be a candidates open forum so students can hear from some of the candidates for student government in advance of the elections. The forum will take place in the North Tent. Some of our LATTC leadership team and myself attended an interesting forum at Cal State Los Angeles last

4 week. It was a discussion of higher education and the current legislative environment surrounding it. It was co sponsored by UCLA along with ELAC, Pasadena City College, LA City College and Trade Tech. On the panel was Congresswoman Judy Chu, state treasurer John Chiang and state senator Ed Hernandez. Each spoke of the importance of community colleges in the state s higher education system. Chu once taught in community college and Hernandez attended community college. All three believed that student debt is an issue that needs to be addressed immediately and the state needs to do more in developing pathways from high school into college. It was an interesting exchange of ideas and I m sure there will be more to come. We continue to gear up for the opening of our multi media LATTC Historical Exhibit honoring our 90 th anniversary in Magnolia Hall. While the campus will get to see the exhibit on April 23 rd, our alumni and community are being invited to join us for a major celebration on Thursday May 21 st (attached). That event will start at 4:30pm and will have a program starting at 5:45pm. If you know of alumni or special guests, who need to be invited, please see the attached invitation. We want this to be a very special night for anyone with a tie to this campus. We will have a Facebook page and a web page dedicated to the 90 th anniversary and they should go live today. Did you get a chance to see the slide presentation David Ysais and his son put together with Nick Carranza s photos of the chancellor s reception and the Deans Awards and Scholarship Honors event a couple of weeks ago? I just watched it and what a nice tribute it is to our students, our Foundation and the meaning of student success. Her experience and hands on attitude was so valuable to us with Kaneesha out on maternity. Thursday was Leige s last day. Thank you Leige for helping us steer the ship, you will be missed. And welcome back Dr. Kaneesha Tarrant who will be re joining us from her maternity leave on Wednesday.
