4 DO: Choose courses you are interested in and that you enjoy Choose a range of different courses, so that you have a broad base from which to choose your post-16 courses Read the subject information Ask the advice of your subject teachers, your tutor and our careers advisers and discuss it with your parents THINK VERY CAREFULLY about the subjects you choose. It is very difficult indeed to change course once you have started. DONT: Pick a subject you have not studied at KS3 unless a new subject at KS4. Choose a course simply because your friends have Allow either a like or a dislike of particular teachers to influence your choice Make your decision hastily Drop any subject you may want to study after Year 11 Drop any subject you may require for entry to a particular occupation or course of further study

5 Your GCSEs Matter Grades in these subjects will effect your choices and the range of options open to you at the end of Year 11; Higher level course at school or college Course entry requirements often specify grades in these subjects Jobs or apprenticeships Many employers will look for students with 4-9 grades in these subjects University The majority of universities require English and maths at grade 5 or above

6 Subjects and Related Careers Most jobs do not require specific GCSE subjects You may change your mind about jobs in future For a few jobs, however, you will need specific subjects, for example:- Art and design based jobs Engineering and technology Language based jobs Practical jobs Scientific jobs

Psychology, Veterinary work, Astronomy) Social Sciences: Can help in careers such as Social Work, Social Care, Nursing, Counselling, Youth Work, Community Work, Law or Politics
