1 Purdue Extension Dubois County November 2016 Clover Chronicles 4-H Expo Thank you to everyone who helped make this year s 4-H Expo a success!!! We appreciate those volunteers who helped make food or work stations! We also appreciate 4-H members who brought projects to display for new members and families. THANK YOU!!! Enrollment- 4-H Enrollment has officially started! Online enrollment will last until January 15th. In an effort to help make the enrollment process more convenient for families, we have decided to hold extended office hours on certain nights during the enrollment window. The dates/ times are listed below. 2 Enrollment Information & Contests All youth in grades 3-12 can join the 4-H program. To enroll or re-enroll, please visit in.4honline.com. We included re-enrollment instructions in the previous newsletter. Please contact the office if you have questions or need assistance. Youth in grades K-2 can join the mini 4-H program. Mini 4-H members will also need to enroll at in.4honline.com, but there is not cost for members. Please note: ONLY Mini 4- H members can participate in Mini 4-H showmanship at the 4-H fair each year. PLEASE NOTE: We have done training with local librarians in the JCDPL corporation on how to use 4HOnline to enroll new members and volunteers. If you visit a library, the librarian should be able to assist if you have questions as you are enrolling or reenrolling. Contests: We will once again have several contests throughout enrollment where members and volunteers can win prizes! We will be rewarding those who have signed up early. We will also be rewarding 4-H community members who help us promote the 4-H program. Be on the look out for contest on social media and be sure to enroll early! 4-H Trip & Scholarship Information There will be a scholarship & trip workshop at the Clover Pavilion on December 12 starting at 7pm. If someone in your family is interested in applying for 4 -H scholarships and awards, then this would be a helpful workshop to attend. We can provide helpful tips to make your scholarship application standout. We will also share about all the trip opportunities there are in 4-H and how to get money to help pay for those opportunities. If you d like additional assistance, please contact the Extension Office to make an appointment with us. We d be happy to guide you through the process. We will even practice interviewing with 4-H members as well. See attached page for more scholarship info. Scholarship Applications are due January 25th. 2
3 T-shirt Design Contest Once again, we will be having a t-shirt design contest for the 2017 Dubois County 4-H t-shirts. We are asking for t-shirt designs for the front of our 4-H T- shirts. Anyone (4-H Member, Parent, Volunteer, etc.) interested in creating a design should submit entries to Purdue Extension-Dubois County BEFORE February 1st, The theme this year is 50 years the Legacy Continues. This year will be the 50th Fair at the current Dubois County Fairgrounds! Therefore, the t-shirt design should incorporate some element of the Fairgrounds in the design. All entries will be considered and looked at by the Dubois County 4-H Junior Leaders. Once the top five have been selected, the 4-H Council will announce the winning shirt. Please note that creative rights will be given to the t- shirt printer. Questions? Contact the Office at or jmonarch@purdue.edu 4-H Library Nights In addition to extended office hours, we will be at some of the local libraries for 4-H nights. We will bring projects and information for new and returning members. We will also do a live robot demonstration at the event. In addition, we will be there to help new and returning members and volunteers enroll in 4-H. 4 Robotics Club Information Starting in January, there will be a new club in Dubois County: The Robotics & Innovation 4-H Club. This club will provide an excellent opportunity for youth to engage in robotics and other related technologies. Official meeting dates, times, and locations have not yet been determined. However, it is likely that this club will meet at Vincennes University Jasper Campus. 4HOnline has been updated to include both the club and project, so members can sign up for them right now! Robotics Encounter Event Coming up on Saturday, November 19th, youth in grades 3-12 will have the opportunity to engage in robotics at a Robotics Encounter. At the event, participants will be able to program and work with different robots and explore drone technology. The Robotics Encounter will take place at VUJC and last from 12-6pm. Snacks will be provided at the event. The event is completely FREE to all participants. Youth can sign up for the event by contacting the Extension Office at You can also jmonarch@purdue.edu to register. Participants will choose which robot they would like to work with during registration. The choices are Edison Robots or EV3 Robots. There is a limit of 20 participants per robot, so please sign up early! The deadline to register is November 16th. Families will only be required to pay for 3 children. In order to insure that you receive this discount, be sure to select the check option for payment on any children who should receive the free enrollment. Enrolling multiple children: Carefully review your payment method when you enroll each child. The 4HOnline system usually defaults to check. If you want to pay with a card, be sure to select that payment with each member. preferences: Please put an that you will be likely to check throughout the year. Some 4-H updates need to be sent in a timely manner, so it is easiest to send via . Newsletters will be sent based on your preferences. Please select mail preference if you wish to always receive a mailed copy of the newsletter. Internet browser: 4HOnline is not as compatible with Internet Explorer. It is recommended that you sign up using another browser like Google Chrome or Firefox. These browsers are free to download from the internet. Computer/Laptop: It is recommended for all members or volunteers to re-enroll using laptops or computers. Tablets and phones can cause problems when reenrolling. 4HOnline Status Definitions: Inactive: the member or volunteer has not re-enrolled for the current year. Incomplete: the member or volunteer started enrolling but did not finish the process. Pending: the enrollment has been submitted but we are missing something such as a payment (youth) or paperwork (volunteers) Active: the member or volunteer have enrolled for the current year and everything has been received & approved. 5

8 Indiana 4-H Foundation Scholarships Senior Year Scholarship Available to 4-H members in their senior year of high school Club Scholarship Available to 4-H members entering Purdue University majoring in the College of Agriculture or select majors in the College of Health and Human Sciences Accomplishment Scholarship Available to 4-H members in grades of high school and the year immediately following high school graduation (see the reverse side for specific categories) Purdue Horticulture and Landscape Architecture Scholarship Available to a 4-H member majoring in horticulture or landscape architecture at Purdue University and has studied plant science in 4-H. 9 2017 Indiana 4-H Accomplishment Scholarship Information Scholarship Purpose and Categories The purpose of the 4-H Accomplishment Scholarship is to recognize youth who have excelled in life skills development through their 4-H activities and involvement. Categories include Animal Science Meat and Milk Production; Animal Science Companion and Small Animal Production; Citizenship; Communications; Engineering and Technological Science; Healthy Living, Food, and Nutrition Science; Leadership Development; and Plant and Environmental Science. Three additional categories are reserved for applicants demonstrating life skills development in more than one of the previously listed categories. Those are Premier Achievement, Premier Citizenship, and Premier Leadership. Eligibility Applicants must be in grade 10, 11, 12, or their first year immediately following 4-H enrollment eligibility at the time applications are due. While an applicant does not have to be a current 4-H member, they must demonstrate multiple years of involvement in Indiana s 4-H Youth Development Program. Youth who have previously been awarded a $1,000 accomplishment scholarship are only eligible to compete in the Premier Achievement, Premier Citizenship, and Premier Leadership categories. Youth who have previously been awarded a $2,000 scholarship are no longer eligible to compete in any category. Awards A minimum of thirty $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to youth based on their demonstration of life skills development in these eight categories: Animal Science Meat and Milk Production; Animal Science Companion and Small Animal Production; Citizenship; Communications; Engineering and Technological Science; Healthy Living, Food, and Nutrition Science; Leadership Development; and Plant and Environmental Science. A minimum of two scholarships will be awarded in each of these eight categories (sixteen total awards) with the remaining fourteen scholarship awards distributed based on the percentage of applications for each category. A minimum of one $2,000 scholarship, with a silver tray, will be awarded in each of these categories: Premier Achievement; Premier Citizenship; and Premier Leadership. Additional scholarships may be awarded depending on sponsorship availability. The number of scholarships awarded in each category may be adjusted to meet special criteria of a particular sponsor.
