8 Central Texas Veterans Health Care System 21 new positions were approved for a total of 64 positions Increases projected for 2011 in: IM-Rheumatology-Sleep-ID-Geriatrics-GI Neurology N/S EM Geriatric Psychiatry

10 Board Pass Rate Excellent (10% greater than average for specialty): 72.7 Good (10% less than average for specialty): 27.3 Urology residents have 100% board pass rate in last 8 years. Orthopedic Surgery scored in the 96% of nation For 5 years, American Board of Radiology ranked S&W Diagnostic Radiology residents #1 in taking and passing oral boards. For 8 years all S&W DR residents passed oral boards without conditions For 30 consecutive years S&W ophthalmology residency program out performed the national average on the national inservice exam

11 Research National/International Research Presentations from July 2009-January residents and fellows presented 45 research studies nationally/ internationally

12 Outstanding 2009 Emergency Medicine had 13 peer reviewed publications and 18 national and international presentations by residents including the number 2 abstract out of approximately 1000 abstracts submitted at the Fifth Mediterranean Emergency Medicine Congress (MEMC V) in Valencia, Spain and 3 other residents presented there as well. At the ACEP Academic Assembly S&W EM program had the number 2 education project dealing with patient crowding.

13 Outstanding 2009 Anesthesia residents published in : Anesthesiology, Anesthesia & Analgesia, Canadian Journal of Anesthesia, Atherosclerosis, Shock, Cardiovascular Ultrasound, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Cardiovascular Interventional Radiology, and the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. National and International presentations by Anesthesia residents include: Amer. Pain Society (San Antonio), International Shock Soc. (Halifax, Nova Scotia), SOAP meeting (Palm Desert, CA ); Banff, Alberta Canada, Washington D.C.), ASA annual meeting (Chicago, San Francisco, Orlando, New Orleans), Cardiac Problems in Pregnancy (Valencia Spain), IARS annual meeting (San Francisco, Hawaii), and European Atherosclerosis Society. (Helsinki, Finland).

14 Outstanding 2009 Nakita Moore, MD, was awarded the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Outstanding General Psychiatry Resident Award in October 2009

15 Outstanding 2009 Internal Medicine PDs have presented 4 posters and 4 workshops at national and state organizations. Residents have presented 5 posters. Residents and program directors have 6 publications. IM resident jeopardy team placed second in the state at the Texas ACP Annual Meeting.

16 Quality Improvement & Patient Safety All programs are actively involved in Quality & Patient Safety activities that integrate directly with the S&W Memorial Hospital Quality and Patient Safety Program GME Administration and Dr. Sibbitt work together to address safety and compliance issues

17 National Leadership Leadership in Professional Organizations in the first 6 months of AY 5 residents and fellows participated in professional activities as leaders of professional organizations.

18 Empowered PDs Empowerment of Program Directors to Manage Budgets The Chief Academic Officer implemented a transparent budgeting system; empowered PDs kept GME controllable costs within budget.

20 Activities of the Graduate Medical Education Committee GME underwent a positive institutional review with the ACGME. All programs remain fully accredited

23 Duty Hours Chair Dr. Wm. Bohannon GME and CMS Accounting implemented a joint effort to address tracking of duty hours Reported Duty Hours since CMS/GME cooperation Reportable hours: 85% Nonreportable hours: 15%
