1 Questions and issues raised at Licensee Workshop: November 2010 M and D 1. Can a student who is re-registering for their Masters/Doctorates register on-line? No. The licensee will have to send an to the advisor assigned to them and request that a registration form be ed through. The completed form will then have to be couriered to UNISA. 2. What is the difference between a first application and a re-registration? A first application entails the student applying for admission to the relevant degree whereas a re-registration has already been approved i.e. student is now in the process of conducting research/writing his/her dissertation. 3. Can students apply for Masters after completing their undergraduate degree? Please check admission requirements as set out in My Unisa 2011: Masters and Doctoral studies. Students need to be in possession of a relevant Honours degree before applying for Masters. A student who has completed their undergraduate degree with Honours does not have a Honours degree this is only an indication that the B-degree was passed with distinction. Some four-year degrees include the Honours component already (e.g. LLB) and these students may then apply for Masters. 4. If the licensee receives a last minute application, can this application (together with relevant documents) be ed through instead of being couriered? It is important that no incomplete application be accepted by the Licensee. If it is too late to process application, then explain this to the student. Remember that first time applications still need to be referred for approval and, therefore, the application will be pushed to the next academic year. You need to inform the student of this. AME- Access and Admissions 1. If a student has a full exemption and is in possession of a diploma, can student apply for exemptions? Student qualifies for degree studies on grounds of his/her full exemption and, therefore, can apply for course exemptions. If admission to degree was granted on grounds of completed diploma, then student would not be in a position to apply for study unit exemptions. 2. Where must documents be sent to during the application phase?

2 If student is applying for degree studies, please sent correctly certified documents to Licensee Admit. For diplomas, Honours and BTech applications, you can send the relevant documents to Licensees. 3. If a student from Kenya meets the necessary admission requirements but does not have English, can he/she submit their TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) results? Results can be submitted and will be forwarded to HESA (Higher Education South Africa) for evaluation. 4. If a student is registering for ACCESS, when must M30 application form be submitted and the R application fee paid? You can submit the M30 application form when the student registers for ACCESS in order to avoid any unnecessary delays once ACCESS is completed. The R should not be collected from the student, however, until ACCESS has been completed. 5. If a student has split his/her O-levels (not in one sitting), how many certificates must be submitted to UNISA? All school leaving certificates must be sent through to Licensee Admit but please take note of the admission requirements for the relevant qualification students need to pass at least three subjects in one sitting. With some examination boards, subjects passed in the same year counts as one sitting. 6. Can students still apply for RPL Pre-Access? No, Pre-Access is no longer offered. 7. Student is applying for BTech but received an to submit M30 application form. Must he/she submit this form? No M30 form to be submitted for National Diplomas, Honours, BTechs, Masters and Doctoral students, as well as for Non-degree Purposes. 8. Zimbabwe O level certificates issued between have security coding over certificate. If a copy of the document is made, it does not come out very clearly. What now? Send through an example to Licensee Admit and they will forward it to their manager in order for the matter to be referred to the matriculation board. College of Economic and Management Sciences 1. If you are doing a registration on-line and you receive an error message indicating that pre-requisite has not been meet, but you feel that the student should not be penalised just because the curriculum has changed, what must you do?

It will only count as a third level module if both first and second levels have been completed. 3. In terms of the maths requirements for BCompt, can students still register for DSC1520 for NDP in order to qualify for admission to this degree? Yes but student can only register for the second-level modules once DSC1520 has been passed. 4. If student does not meet the required percentage for Financial Accounting III in order to register for Honours BCompt (CTA), can student repeat the third level modules for NDP or must student register for Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting Sciences? Student must register for Postgraduate Diploma and pass DIPAC15 with 55 % before admission to CTA can be considered. 5. In My Unisa 2011, a number of new Business Management modules are indicated on first level. Are these valid options for degree studies? This is a printing error. These modules will only be offered as from First level Business Management modules for degree studies are MNB1501 and MNB Can students register FAC1501 for BCom degrees? FAC1501 is only available for National Diplomas and not for degrees. This module is on a lower level than FAC1502 and FAC1601 which are the degree modules. Though FAC1501 is equivalent to FAC1M1X, it will not give exemption from any degree accounting module on first level. College of Science, Engineering and Technology 1. If students are in the construction field and they wish to pursue a relevant qualification, what are their options? They can register for National Diploma: Civil Engineering and, thereafter, the relevant BTech. 2. Foreign students need to have passed English A-levels in order to meet admission requirements for BSC. What can students do if they have not done so? They can register for CSS101H together with a maximum of four modules for nondegree purposes. 3. Can students do their Engineering practicals outside South Africa? The student/licensee will have to contact the relevant academic department to enquiry whether or not special arrangements can be made.

4 4. If you do not have maths at school leaving level, can you still register for the ACCESS maths module? No. The student will have to do maths at an accredited institution outside of UNISA and then re-apply. College of Law 1. National Diploma: Civil Law Administration has to be completed by If students don t complete, they have to switch over to a degree. What happens if the student did not have full exemption when he/she started the National Diploma? This means that some of the modules might not be covered by a valid matric and, therefore, some of the modules might be forfeited. The student will have to apply for exemptions and AME will have to evaluate possible backdating of matriculation exemption certificate. 2. Which Criminology third level modules are required for admission to Honours? CMY3701, CMY3702, CMY3704, CMY3705 and CMY3706 as stipulated in My Unisa College of Human Sciences 1. Do pipeline students registered for BA (General) have to do the five fundamental modules? No, the new curriculum is only applicable for new students i.e. students registering for BA (General) for the first time in Student already has a completed Honours and wishes to pursue a second Honours. Can he/she apply for exemptions from the research modules? No, the research modules differ for the various subjects i.e. the research modules for Geography are not the same as for Psychology. Can the new honours Psychology qualification be completed in one year? No, the new curriculums consist of eight modules (not the seven stipulated in My Unisa: College of Human Sciences brochure) and one of the compulsory modules (HRPYC81) will only be offered from Student has a three-year teaching diploma from a recognized foreign institute and wishes to register for ACE. Does the student qualify? No. As from 2011, no teaching diplomas completed outside SA will grant admission to ACE unless the student is also in possession of a three-year bachelor degree from an

5 accredited institution. These students (with only a teaching diploma) will have to apply for BEd. 5. Can students do their teaching practicals outside South Africa? No, all teaching practicals must be done in SA. This is non-negotiable. Students who wish to apply for exemption from teaching practicals will have to contact RPL. 6. If a foreign student wishes to teach in SA, will his/her foreign qualifications be accepted? Student will have to submit his/her qualifications to the National Department of Education for evaluation. 7. What is the difference between the old and the new PGCE (SPFET) curriculum? The Old curriculum consisted of thirteen modules whereas the New curriculum comprises only of ten. The New curriculum came into effect in Students who started their PGCE before 2010 will have to follow the Old curriculum i.e. will have to pass the thirteen modules. 8. Has EDA3046 taken the place of EDT202L for BED : ECD students? EDA3046 has replaced EDT202L across the BEd curriculums. EDT202L is available for repeaters only i.e. students who qualify for supplementary exams. 9. Have the ENN III modules been semesterized? Yes, these modules are now semesterized. The My Unisa 2011 brochure still indicates them as year modules but this is a printing error. RPL - Recognition of Prior Learning 1. When is the best time to apply for RPL? It takes approximately three months for RPL application to be finalized and, therefore, it is advised that applications are not submitted during registration periods. 2. What documents must be submitted together with application? The student must submit his/her CV, job description, qualifications and other supporting documents. 3. When are the exemptions done? If application successful, then exemptions will be done before the next registration period commences. Student Assessment and Administration 1. When students are submitting their assignments on-line they receive system errors and the assignment doesn t go through. What can they do?

6 This normally happens on assignment closing dates. It is advised that students submit their assignments electronically 72 hours before the closing date. If they experience errors until the closing date, they must then submit their assignment in hard copy. Foreign students may fax through their assignments but will need to post the hard copy as well. 2. Can student s record reflect the difference between an aegrotat and a special exam? An aegrotat exam is assigned a code of either 2 or 5 whereas a special exam has code of 7 or Can students query their staggered results? Once it appears on My Unisa, they can query the results i.e. apply for remarks etc. 4. If a student applies for a special exam, does his/her year mark count towards final mark? Year marks count towards aegrotat/special exams but not towards supplementary exams. 5. Student s record shows absent from exam but he/she has proof of sitting the exam. Can exam papers get lost? Yes, papers can get lost or stolen. Contact exams for assistance. 6. If student applies for copy of his/her exam transcript and there is a problem with the marking, what must they do? They must contact their UNISA lecturer. It is important to contact them as soon as possible after the exam results are released. 7. If student fails to submit his/her assignment on time, can he/she still defer exam? No. In order to an exam to be deferred, the student must have obtained exam admission for that module. If no assignment was submitted then exam admission will not be obtained. Registration Processes 1. When attempting to obtain a quotation on-line, you receive error messages. What must you do? Please check if correct study unit codes are being used. You will need to consult My Unisa Students try to manipulate the system and try to register themselves even though they are a licensee student. Does UNISA block them? If they try and add modules via MyUnisa, they will be blocked. If it does happen that the additions go through on your account without the student paying for those modules, please contact the Licensee office. You will need to check your accounts order to pick up registrations you didn t process.

7 3. If student registers for second semester modules beginning of the year and then cancels them before second semester registration closes, does he/she forfeit fees? Yes, the minimum amount (including foreign levy) will be forfeited. 4. Student has registered for a module for the second semester in the beginning of the year and wishes to switch the same module to the first semester; can he/she do so? Students can exchange semesters for the same module before the relevant closing date i.e. students can switch a second semester module to the first semester provided that the request is made before the closing date for first semester. In this case, do NOT submit a cancellation request on-line. You will need to send an to the Licensee office requesting the exchange. If students wish to replace the module with another one, then a cancellation will have to be done on the registered module and the new module will be added i.e. the student will forfeit fees. 5. Licensees cannot access the student s identity number/passport number on the Unisa system in order to assist student to log on to MyUnisa. What can be done? Possible access to this information will be investigated but, for the interim, make a print out of the on-line registration application i.e. the information submitted by the Licensee on-line is the information that will appear on Unisa s system. 6. Students are now restricted to 60 NQF credits per semester. What happens if the student only has seven modules to complete his/her qualification and wishes to register all outstanding modules in one semester? The student may apply for special permission to register more than 60 NQF credits per semester provided that he/she meets the same requirements as students who apply for permission to register 12 modules in an academic year i.e. the student must be in the final year and have an average of 55% for all modules passed. 7. In the fee structure reflected in the My Unisa brochures, reference is made to full-year Honours course 36 SAQA. What does this mean? Some of the Honours modules have changed from a 24 credit module to 36 credit module i.e. HBEDPCK. These modules are more expensive as indicated in the fee structure. CCM- Corporate Communications and Marketing 1. It seems as if CCM competing with the Licensees. They go to the country for marketing purposes without involving the licensees. CCM are supposed to inform the Licensee at least three weeks in advance. Please check your contact details with IRPD to ensure that UNISA has your correct

8 details. If you see an advert running and are not aware of the visit, please notify CCM. 2. Licensees try to source students to register with UNISA via them. Once they are registered, however, they start receiving packages/ information pamphlets where UNISA advertises alternative methods of registering i.e. on-line where you only have to pay the minimum amount and not the full amount. These students are then channelled as UNISA students and no longer Licensee students. CCM will look into the matter and raise the issue with the relevant parties. 3. Can CCM attend International Trade Fairs with the Licensees? If the event is educational in nature then contact CCM with details. 4. Can Licensee contact details be included in CCM brochures in order to raise awareness amongst students of the existence of licensees? CCM will look into the matter. 5. Can marketing materials be sent to Licensees so they can make us of them for small functions? Brochures will be sent to each Licensee.
