1 Johnson County Community College Transfer Program to the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Education Bachelor of Arts in Middle School Education Catalog Contact: Education Student Services Phone: (816) Homepage: education.umkc.edu The Associate of Arts degree (A.A.) at JCCC is a general transfer degree and partners well with the first two years of most bachelor degree programs. Students pursuing the A.A. may select courses that satisfy both the A.A. degree requirements and lower division requirements for a bachelor s degree at four-year institutions. The elective hours within the A.A. allow students to complete additional general education and lower division courses required for specific majors. The A.A. degree requires completion of 64 credit hours, the maximum number of hours from a community college that will be applied toward a bachelor s degree at most four-year schools. Meeting with a JCCC counselor is strongly recommended for selection of appropriate courses. The UMKC School of Education offers a Bachelor of Arts in Middle School Education leading to certification in four content areas: * Language Arts * Mathematics * Science * Social Studies All UMKC undergraduate degrees require at least 120 credit hours, some programs may require more hours. Students must complete at least 0 credit hours at UMKC and at least 12 upper division credit hours in their major department / program at UMKC to be eligible to receive an undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. General UMKC Transfer Admission s: * 2.0 or higher cumulative GPA. * /No-credit or Pass/Fail coursework may only be applied to elective coursework and will not apply towards UMKC s General Education Core or major requirements. * Equivalent courses may be repeated but all grades will be averaged for GPA calculation purposes and students will only receive credit for one attempt. * Full transfer admission requirements can be found at: School of Education Admission s: * The Middle School Education program is for those who want to be certified to teach or work with children from 5th through 9th grade. This degree program places student teachers in one of our nine partner school districts and emphasis is on teaching within urban or diverse settings. * Transfer students need to have an overall 2.75 GPA on a 4.0 scale in all coursework. * The School of Education will calculate the highest grade of a course in the GPA if it is repeated before beginning at UMKC. * Courses used toward certification must receive a letter grade - credit/no credit is not accepted. * Completion of all education and content area courses with grades of C or better is required. * Students who are considering transferring to the UMKC School of Education are encouraged to contact the office of Student Services to create a personalized academic plan to ensure a smooth transition to UMKC.
