THE SPIRES COLLEGE The Spires College Sixth Form Prospectus

Every student is supported to be the very best that they can be. Whatever your starting point and whatever your ambitions, we will support and guide you every step of the way.

Welcome The Spires College Sixth Form offers exciting opportunities for young people who aspire to achieve their true potential. We are committed to delivering the best learning, support and guidance for our young people during their time here and are proud of the progress that students make at The Spires College. We understand, profoundly, the need to get the right students onto the right courses and of offering students high quality advice, support and guidance throughout their time with us. We strive to meet the needs of individual young adults who are preparing for their future in employment, further education or at university. Each of our students is important: we want every one of them to achieve success. We are delighted that you are considering joining us and look forward to welcoming you. Ms Alex Newton Principal Each of our students is important: we want every one of them to achieve success.

About us Here at The Spires College Sixth Form, students join a distinctly adult, yet caring, community. Our Sixth Form is inclusive and comprises students from The Spires College, many other local schools and students new to the area or the country. On joining the Sixth Form, students enjoy a very different learning experience than they might have had before. Learning and relationships with staff and fellow students are born out of mutual respect, curiosity and willingness to learn. Students in our College show initiative, are enthused about their learning, are open to taking risks and show resilience and a determination to succeed. They are stretched and challenged, both in and out of the classroom, and are encouraged to express their views in ways that might be new to them. The Spires College Sixth Form offers a supportive and challenging bridge between school and university or working life. Why would I want to go anywhere else? The support I have had from Year 7 to 11 has been unbelievable and coming back meant that the support would continue, which it has, to ensure that I can excel academically."

Here at The Spires College we are privileged to be able to have a designated Sixth Form Centre which contains a variety of resources to support our studies. Resources such as Apple Mac computers, PCs and a study room are all for the sole use of the Sixth Form students. The Sixth Form is open from very early to very late and this enables us to study outside of our timetabled lessons.

Student Life The Spires College Sixth Form has a different atmosphere from the main School. There is a sense of a new start, both for students already at the College and the many others who join us from other schools and other countries. The Spires College gives Sixth Form students their own space and identity. As well as meeting the academic challenges that we set them, this is a time to widen experiences, enjoy new challenges and meet new friends.

Studying With Us Life in the Sixth Form is very different from Year 11. You will have more freedom to choose what and how you learn. Private study time is an integral part of your timetable. We expect that students will use their time productively and we will help you to do so. At The Spires College, we place great emphasis on getting to know our students as people, as well as learners. In the Sixth Form: every student has ambitious targets to raise expectations, to stretch and to challenge every student s progress towards their targets is carefully monitored by their subject teachers, subject leaders, their personal tutor and the Head of Sixth Form. Early and effective intervention programmes ensure that any problems are quickly identified and solutions found every student receives personalised careers guidance, including careful advice at every stage of the university application process, or preparation for entry to vocational courses in further education, or to employment, Apprenticeships and business start-ups every student is supported to be the very best that they can be. Whatever your starting point and whatever your ambitions, we will support and guide you every step of the way. The Spires College pushes and challenges my academic ability while supporting my future career options by giving me specific careers advice and guidance on becoming a primary school teacher.

Your Study Programme Each Study Programme is unique and carefully designed to meet the individual aspirations and needs of our students. Our Sixth Form Study Programmes are made up of examination courses, other qualifications, tutorials and a variety of other activities, including work experience, which give our students the opportunity to develop important skills for learning and for life. Each Study Programme is unique and carefully designed to meet the individual aspirations and needs of our students whilst providing them with qualifications and skills to enable them to progress to higher education, employment or further training. Your GCSE results matter: there are entry requirements for every course but we consider each student individually and take individual circumstances into account at every stage. We will help you to find the right Study Programme for you. Which type of courses you take and how many subjects you study will depend on both your GCSE results and your future plans. It might help you to think about which of our pathways describes you best and will lead you to where you want to go. Pathway 1: Access This pathway is for you if you have fewer than 5 GCSEs A*-C. Following this pathway will allow you to progress onto further study or lead you directly into employment, an Apprenticeship or training. Your Study Programme will be a combination of Level 1 and Level 2 courses, both at The Spires College and with our partner providers. Your Study Programme is also likely to include work experience. If you haven t got a C in GCSE English or Maths, further study in these subjects will also be part of your programme. Pathway 2: Level 3 Applied You will have at least 5 GCSEs A*-C. Your Study Programme will be a combination of Level 3 BTEC courses. These have more coursework and fewer exams than A-levels. Following this pathway will allow you to progress onto further study in these subjects or lead you directly into employment in a related field. Your Study Programme might also include work experience. If you haven t got a C in GCSE English or Maths, further study in these subjects will also be part of your programme. Pathway 3: Level 3 Combination You will have at least 5 GCSEs A*-C, including English and Maths, and are likely to have BTEC Level 2 Merits or GCSE Grade Bs in the subjects that you want to study in the Sixth Form. Your Study Programme will be a combination of A-levels and Level 3 BTEC courses. We can advise you of the right combination of courses for your future plans. Most students on the Combination Pathway are planning to progress onto further study. Pathway 4: Level 3 Academic You will have at least 5 GCSEs A*-C, including English and Maths, and are likely to have GCSE Grade Bs in the subjects that you want to study at A-level. You are likely to be planning to progress onto further study at university or in further education. We will advise you on the right number and choice of A-level subjects for you, depending on both your GCSE results and your future plans.

I stayed at The Spires College to first of all complete an Access course at Level 2 as I did not have enough GCSEs to start A-levels. Level 2 courses taught me that I had to be responsible and mature with my studies. This has enabled me to embrace my Level 3 courses, I am now following Pathway 3 and I am really enjoying the challenges that these courses have to offer.

Being part of the drama company has helped me to become a more confident and outspoken person. Involving myself in the school production and pantomime is a fun and exciting challenge and it helps to showcase the skills I have learnt. It is thanks to this department that I am the person I am today and I hope to develop a career in this subject.

Enrichment Students have access to excellent, specialist facilities. ICT suites, recording studios, media and editing suites, photographic darkrooms, laboratories, dance and drama studios, a fitness suite, a sports hall and a well-stocked library. Sixth Form life also presents many opportunities to extend, enrich and enjoy a range of activities outside of the curriculum. Our Sixth Form students take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Ten Tors, a wide range of sporting activities both competitively and for leisure, and many cultural opportunities, including ski trips, visits to galleries, as well as study visits across Europe. Previously, our 'World Challenge' students spent a life-changing summer in Morocco; with our World Challenge projects culminating in an expedition to Tanzania. Could you be part of our next challenge? The opportunities for me have grown and grown. I started off doing my Bronze DofE and this proved to be the starting point for my involvement in Outdoor Education. My journey has taken me from the coastal paths and lanes of Torbay to the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco! It will be nice to receive a Level 2 qualification in expedition leading at the end of this year for the work I have done with the Bronze DofE group. What started with me as a trainee will end as me being the trainer.

Stepping Up Taking Responsibility The Spires College Sixth Form students are the most senior in the College and are role models for the younger members of our community. Sixth Form students at the College play a leading role in the College community. We have very high expectations of our students and we will help them to meet those expectations. The College has created a purposeful, friendly, adult environment in which our senior students are expected to develop a sense of independence and take responsibility for their own success. Our Sixth Form community is led by the College s Head Boy and Head Girl, and a team of Student Ambassadors. Our Student Ambassadors lead many College activities and help with lessons and clubs. Lots of students in our Sixth Form community mentor younger pupils who need support through our buddy system. Such opportunities allow students to give something back to the College while developing their selfconfidence and communication skills.

I applied for Head Boy because it is a great opportunity to give something back to the school that has supported me. I want to have a positive impact on the school community and the Head Girl and I are working not only with the Sixth Form Council but the whole school as part of the whole School Council to ensure the students have their say in moving the school forward and to discuss what matters to them. Student voice is very important and I am pleased it is valued so much in this school. I am very proud to be part the Spires College.

I came to this school 6 years ago from Poland. Starting a school with a language barrier was very hard at first and I wanted to help other students in this position. As part of the Sixth Form Buddy System I am helping a Year 9 Polish student to learn English which is helping him to communicate better with his friends and feel part of the school.

Guidance and Support At The Spires College we pride ourselves on knowing each and every one of our students and our Sixth Form is no different. At The Spires College we understand the importance of building on students prior learning and experience, as well as pointing them towards new opportunities and guiding them in new directions. We offer a transition programme from Key Stage 4 to Key Stage 5. Whether you join us from The Spires College, from another school or from another country, you will receive one-to-one advice and support to help you to choose courses that are right for you. We want our students to love learning with us and to lay the foundations for future success. At The Spires College, students join a caring community within which high levels of personal support and challenging learning combine to create success. I did not know what I wanted to do when I left the Sixth Form. However, I have been given a great deal of support, information and guidance on careers and education and am now certain of the career pathway I want to take. I am hoping to do a foundation degree in Film and Photography. The opportunities I have been given have been amazing and I am very grateful for all the help and support.

Broadening Horizons The Spires College is a truly international community. We are privileged to welcome students from all over the world into our Sixth Form. So, as well as learning new things in new ways, our Sixth Form students experience new cultures, new languages and new friendships. The school has great facilities for learning and helpful, motivating teachers who encourage us in reaching our goals and aspirations. We are enjoying all our new subjects and we are grateful for the many opportunities provided by the school.

Caring for the Future This is an important time for you. You have reached an exciting stage in your education and are making life changing decisions about your next steps in learning and life. Students from The Spires College go on to do fantastic things! Every year our students take their next steps at the best universities, into further education, Apprenticeships or employment. We are proud of them and they are proud of having studied with us. I was a student at The Spires College for 7 years where I achieved many things; for example I achieved my GCSEs and A-levels which meant I could go to university and I also became Head Girl in my second year of Sixth Form. I have now returned to The Spires College as a member of staff in the PE Department.
