1 Tools for Work-Based Learning Launching Internships and Employer Engagement with The Foundation for California Community Colleges

2 Why Internships? Nickolas Saldivar is the Business Services Officer at the Agricultural Labor Relations Board (ALRB) and in his second year in the evening division at McGeorge School of Law getting his JD/MBA. He started at ALRB as a student intern in the Foundation s Career Pathway Program.

5 The Foundation for California Community Colleges We are the official nonprofit supporting the Chancellor s Office and the California Community Colleges. This uniquely collaborative relationship allows us to support all 112 Community Colleges across the state through innovative, diverse and far reaching programs. These programs allow us to benefit California s community colleges while simultaneously improving education, environmental and economic conditions for all California citizens.

6 Foundation s Role in Workforce Development Workforce development has been a core strength of the Foundation s work since our inception in 1998 Career Pathway Internship Facilitation Service (since 1998) Air Quality Technician Training Program (since 2004) Health Care Education Programs (since 2004) Technical Assistance Provider for paid internships for Doing What Matters (since 2013) LaunchPath (since 2013)

7 LaunchPath Recently funded by a $1.2 million dollar grant from JP Morgan Chase Philanthropy Board to the Foundation for California Community Colleges and the Linked Learning Alliance Launch comprehensive work-based learning pilot program in Sacramento for 500 high school and community college students in Fall 2014 Aligning with and supporting the work of the industry sector strategy and infrastructure from the Doing What Matters framework 3 key components: Employer engagement Enhancing back-office support Create online matching-badging system

8 Skill Badging LaunchPath includes the ability for students, employers, and schools to earn and award specific badges that identify and acknowledge the work students have completed in preparation for entering the workforce. This technology strategically positions the Foundation to extend its Badging framework to design and build related badge offerings to help students promote and highlight their learning and accomplishments.

9 Career Pathway Internship Service Nearly 3,000 students have been placed since program inception in 1998 through the Career Pathway Internship Program by eliminating and reducing barriers to hosting internships so that employers get the most productive intern for their organization and provide the best learning experience for the student.

10 Career Pathway Internship Service Value for Employers Builds a talent pipeline Allows employers to try before you buy with a pool of qualified, vetted workers with in-demand skills Reduces HR Overhead and Liability Foundation acts as employer of record thereby providing back office tasks: recruitment, record-keeping, payroll, workers compensation, and administrative functions Simplifies the process of creating student internship positions Boosts Company Image and Morale Increases company positive brand image and recognition in the community and region, while engaging existing employees in the process

12 Career Pathway Internship Service Requirements for Student Participation Maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average Be enrolled in at least six (6) semester units or nine (9) quarter units of undergraduate work, or at least four (4) semester or six (6) quarter units of graduate work. Be employed in work related to their field of study Work no more than 1500 hours per academic year
