3 Bachelor of Design (Communication Design) (Programme Code: Full-time Part-time ) (CRICOS Code: K) About the Programme This locally accredited programme aims to nurture imaginative designer to effectively communicate messages and information through a wide variety of visual means. Students will graduate with a portfolio that reflects a diversity of ideas, production skills and experiences that will prepare them to cope with the challenges of an exciting and evolving industry. With the knowledge and skills acquired from the programme, graduates are able to work effectively in areas, such as advertising, publishing, publicity, printing, merchandising, multimedia, education and research. Programme Structure The Bachelor of Design (Communication Design) programme is a three-year programme consisting of a total 300 credit points. In Hong Kong, the full-time and part-time mode of the top-up degree programme will be offered and students will receive 150 or 200 credit points of advanced standing from prior study. To qualify for the award, a student must attain 100 or 150 credit points by completing eight units of Professional Major (100 credit points) and - depending on exemptions - an additional four units of Advanced Minor (50 credit points). Students taking 150 credit points have to complete 12 units either in the full-time mode across three semesters in a year, or six semesters in two years in the part-time mode. Students taking 100 credit points have to complete 8 units either in the full-time mode across two semesters in a year, or four semesters in two years in the part-time mode. With the training in time-based sequence design, students will develop expertise in animation, including 3D modeling, digital video, audio media, and multimedia design for electronic media. Graduates with highly developed and relevant skills will be able to start their career in diverse industries, such as post-production houses, digital video, animation, interactive media, web design consultancies, and video game design house. Graduate s Sharing The programme has provided me with practical design knowledge as well as entrepreneurship theories and practices. The design management units taught us how to integrate design with business, we got the taste of running a business and ample chances to train up project and team management skills through group work. Apart from studying I also got many opportiunities to participate various exhibitions in Hong Kong, Beijing as well as in Canada. This for no doubt has widened my horizon and expanded my peer network in design. 5 Professional Recognition Membership in the Association Graduates from Communication Design Programme Administration Graduates from Digital Media Design Hong Kong Designers Association (HKDA) Design Institute of Australia Australian Graphic Design Association Melbourne Art Directors Multimedia Industry Network HKCAAVQ Accreditation The Bachelor of Design (Communication Design) and Bachelor of Design (Digital Media Design) programmes have been accredited by Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) as locally accredited top-up degree programmes to reach HKQF Level 5, which is equivalent to the standing of bachelor s degrees offered by local universities in Hong Kong. The programmes are administered by the School of Continuing and Professional Education (SCOPE), City University of Hong Kong while Swinburne University of Technology will monitor the teaching and progress of the programmes. Further Studies & Career Prospects Graduates of the Communication / Digital Media Design programmes will be able to apply for a diverse range of employment opportunities, locally and overseas. In fact, with the degree granted by Swinburne, graduates are equipped with all the necessary skills and knowledge to start their own design studios in addition to applying for jobs. With the advent of digital media and communications, many new employment opportunities have also arisen in recent times, such as advertising and branding, 2D and 3D animation, broadcast film production and video post-production, interactive and multi-media design, online marketing multimedia design etc. As shown by the past years' employment survey, 100% of the graduates of the programme in Hong Kong have found a job in a related field within two months after completing all the courses. Some of these graduates are now working with international advertising agencies like Ogilvy, DRAFTFCB, Grey Worldwide, and J. Walter Thompson; and a few are with well-established local communication studios like Maxi Communications and Ouch League. Graduates of the Hong Kong programme are also eligible to continue their studies with an honours degree of the same programme in Melbourne; or they can apply directly for the first year of the Masters programme offered by Swinburne in Melbourne. Assessment and Award Assessment of all modules is by coursework. A student will be recommended for the award of Bachelor of Design conferred by Swinburne University of Technology, upon successful completion of the programme. Design Show 2011

6 Entrance Requirements To be eligible for admission to the Communication / Digital Media Design programmes, an applicant must satisfy the following programme entrance requirements: a) Satisfactory completion of the Associate of Arts in Digital Visual Design (AADVD) programme from Community College of City University (CCCU); or b) Sub-degree holders in related disciplines in design from local universities and other post-secondary design institutions; or c) Demonstration of skills and capabilities acquired through professional experience. Applicants are required to demonstrate an English proficiency level of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent. Those with English as the language of instruction in tertiary studies may be accepted as meeting our English language requirements. Each application will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Fees Application fee: HK$140 (to be paid at the time of application) Programme fee (full-time) : HK$108,000 for 12 units HK$72,000 for 8 units (part-time) : HK$120,000 for 12 units HK$80,000 for 8 units Graduation fee: HK$400 (to be paid with the first instalment of programme fee) In the case of re-assessment and / or retaking of a unit, additional fees will be charged. Application A completed application form, together with copies of academic certificates, portfolio of design projects and proof of payment / payment of the application fee of HK$140, should be sent to SCOPE on or before the deadline. (Please refer to the application guide for details) Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview. Selection will be made based on the applicant s portfolio, academic qualifications and the performance at the interview, if any. Subject to this, non-cccu AADVD graduates may only need to take 8 units of Professional Major. All applicants will be informed of the application results by mail.
