1 Senior Information August 24, 2017 CONGRATULATIONS! You have finally made it to your Senior Year. It is extremely important that seniors check graduation requirements. This includes High School credits (23) Graduation Points (18) Remember you must meet subcategory requirements as well. We have given you an unofficial copy of your transcript. On this transcript you will find: a record of credits you have earned from grades 9 to 11, your class rank, your grade point average through grade 11, AIR(EOY) test scores, and attendance record. We are also providing you with a list of graduation requirements and a credit check-list form. Many of you have had meetings with Mr. Prohaska and Mrs. Long regarding graduation. Please remember the information from the document you received during that meeting as well! In the next day or two, please review your transcript and mark off the courses you have completed and are currently taking on the credit checklist form. Please contact your counselor immediately if there is any mistake/question concerning your transcript, credits and/or graduation requirements. 2 Naviance Login All College Applications & Transcript Requests Must Happen Through Naviance In order to log in to Naviance Drop down sign-in Students and Families School postal code Click on Monroe High School Username: first name last name(no spaces) Example: daralaforest Password: Student ID number Doing a College Search through Naviance Click on the COLLEGES tab You can use SuperMatch College search, College Search, or use the search box on the left hand side to look for a specific school. Transcript Request Through Naviance All students are expected to request their transcripts through Naviance. It is free to do this! When you complete a college application or the common app your will need to request a transcript to accompany that application. Below is the process for requesting a transcript through Naviance to be sent electronically. YOUR COUNSELOR WILL NOT KNOW TO SEND A TRANSCRIPT UNLESS YOU FOLLOW THESE STEPS In the COLLEGES tab click on TRANSCRIPTS on the left Next Request transcripts for the college or scholarships you For College applications, check the box for each college, then click REQUEST TRANSCRIPT at the bottom of the page For scholarships, fill out the information, then click ADD TRANSCRIPT REQUEST Creating a Common App Account and Linking it to Naviance Many college/universities use the Common App as the application for their school. This is a great thing, because hundreds of colleges accept the Common App and you only have to complete it one time. In order for the counselors to submit information to the Common App for you (there is a counselor section) you must link the Common App to Naviance Today we are going to show you how to do this...but below is a tutorial on how to do the linking, just in case you need help! Steps to Linking the Common App to Naviance In the Naviance website Click on the Colleges Tab

3 Then click on the Colleges I m applying to link You will be prompted to create your Common App account! You will receive login information for this account as well! After you create the Common App Account Then you have to Authorize the FERPA Waiver in the common app. Complete the Common App Address information on this Naviance page. You are finished! Requesting a Letter of Recommendation Through Naviance Click on the ABOUT ME tab Complete the Recommendation Letter Survey, and mark as COMPLETE! (Teachers, counselors, administrators cannot complete a Letter of Recommendation until this survey has been completed! Before requesting the letter, personally (verbally) ask the person to write the letter! Be polite! In COLLEGES I M APPLYING TO in the COLLEGES tab, scroll down to TEACHER RECOMMENDATION Click ADD/CANCEL REQUESTS Select the Name and add a personal note with the purpose of the letter (why you want it) and a THANK YOU! Click UPDATE REQUEST ALLOW AT LEAST 2 WEEKS FOR THE LETTER TO BE COMPLETED BEFORE THE DEADLINE! College Visits/College Rep Visits College Visit s - Allowed 3 days; Fill out a college visit form (pick this up from Mrs. Rasnick in the front office) College Rep Visits at Monroe - College representatives will be coming to Monroe during the school day to meet with students who are interested in attending their college. Students are allowed 3 Rep visits. Each time a College Rep schedules a meeting at Monroe, Counselors will you a google form asking you to reply with a yes or no indicating whether or not you want to attend the meeting. Please make sure you complete the form by the deadline. We will not take last minute requests. THANK YOU!

4 Financial Aid & FAFSA You may qualify for financial help through colleges based on academics, athletics, musical ability or financial need. Contact the financial aid office at the school you are interested in to get more information on the opportunities they have available. Sources of Financial Aid: Scholarships Grants Work Study Loans Military Benefits & More FAFSA: The Free Application for Student Aid the FAFSA is the initial application to apply for federal grants, work study, and student loans for most colleges and universities in the US. It can be filled out beginning on October 1st, 2017, if you are planning to attend college next fall ( school year). This is a NEW Submission date! You must use 2016 tax data and personal banking information to fill out this application. Check with the colleges you are interested in to see when their FAFSA deadlines are in You will receive more information on the FAFSA process throughout the year. FAFSA WORKSHOP!!!! Dates will be coming soon for this workshop!!! How to fill out the FAFSA: Scholarships All Scholarships will be posted on Naviance. Local scholarships are typically available beginning in December and January. The Counseling Office will be posting and announcing local scholarships as they become available. The best way to keep up-to-date on the most current scholarships available to you is to regularly check the scholarship list link on Naviance. To find this: 1) login to naviance 2) click on the colleges tab 3) scroll to the bottom and click on scholarship list The Middletown Community Foundation Scholarship Program If you are completing an application for a scholarship through the Middletown Community Foundation It is your RESPONSIBILITY to make sure the Foundation receives ALL of the documents required for the application! Many times the applications require many different documents! To begin applying to this program: Go to: Click on: AwardSpringLogin (in the right hand column) You can also begin looking into other scholarships now through several helpful websites, examples including:

Course Level Options: General, College Prep, Honors, AP, Dual Enrollment

6 Honors Diploma Requirements : The student who completes the high school academic curriculum shall meet at least seven of the following eight criteria: 1. Earn four units of English; 2. Earn at least four units of mathematics which shall include Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry and another higher level course or a four-year sequence of courses which contains equivalent content; 3. Earn at least four units of science including one unit of Physics and one unit of Chemistry; 4. Earn four units of social studies; 5. Earn either three units of one World Language or two units each of two World Languages; 6. Earn one unit of fine arts; 7. Maintain an overall high school grade point average of at least 3.5 on a four-point scale up to the last grading period of the senior year; or 8. Obtain a composite score of 27 on the American College Test's ACT assessment (excluding the optional writing test) or a combined score of 1210 on the College Board's SAT verbal and mathematics sections (excluding the required writing section). The student who completes an intensive career-technical education curriculum shall meet at least seven of the following eight criteria: 1. Earn four units of English; 2. Earn at least four units of mathematics which shall include Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry and another higher level course or a four-year sequence of courses which contains equivalent content; 3. Earn at least four units of science including two advanced sciences; 4. Earn four units of social studies; 5. Earn four units in a career-technical education program that leads to an industry-recognized credential, results in an apprenticeship or is part of an articulated career pathway, which can lead to post secondary credit. If the student's program design does not provide for any of these outcomes, then the student must achieve the proficiency benchmark established for the applicable Ohio career-technical competency assessment or the equivalent; 6. Achieve the proficiency benchmark established for the Ohio Career-Technical Competency Assessment (available at with additional content available by clicking here ) or equivalent assessment aligned with state-approved and industry validated technical standards; or 7. Maintain an overall high school grade point average of at least 3.5 on a four-point scale up to the last grading period of the senior year; or 8. Obtain a composite score of 27 on the American college testing service's ACT assessment (excluding the optional writing test) or a combined score of 1210 on the college board's SAT verbal and mathematics sections (excluding the score obtained on the required writing section).

7 NCAA Requirements (National Collegiate Athletic Association) The minimum number of required core courses is 16. GPA is based on a minimum grade point average in a successfully completed core curriculum that includes at least 16 core courses in the following areas: English 4 years Mathematics 3 years (Algebra I and above) Natural/Phys. Science 2 years (including at least one laboratory course) Social Studies 2 years Additional courses in: English, Mathematics, or Physical Science -1 year. Additional Academic Courses: 4 years in any of the above areas or world language, philosophy, or non-doctrinal religion (e.g. comparative religion courses). Students must have a core-course grade-point average (based on a maximum of 4.0) and a combined score on the SAT verbal and math sections or a sum score on the ACT based on the qualifier index scale. Senior athletes need to see the counselor regarding the NCAA Clearing House requirements. NCAA guides are available in the Counseling Office. The NCAA website is: www1.ncaa.org NAIA Eligibility (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) The NAIA Eligibility Center will determine your eligibility based on your academic record and additional information you provide. High School Students If you graduate from high school this spring and enroll in college this coming fall, the requirements are simple. High school graduation, plus two out of three of these requirements: 1. Achieve a minimum of 18 on the ACT or 940 on the SAT 2. Achieve a minimum overall high school GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale 3. Graduate in the top half of your high school class Early Decisions for High School Seniors Students who have completed their junior year of high school with an overall 3.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale, OR students who have completed the first half of senior year with an overall 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale, plus the minimum test scores required (18 ACT or 940 SAT), may receive an eligibility decision early in the senior year. To receive an early decision, register with the NAIA Eligibility Center, have your high school send official transcripts to the Eligibility Center and contact ACT or SAT to have their test scores sent directly (the NAIA code is 9876 with ACT and SAT).

10 College Application Checklist 1. Research colleges! Attend college fairs Research colleges on Naviance Look at college websites See what the application process looks like for each school (some schools require essays, some don t) Find out what you want in a school: big/small, public/private, in state/ out of state, majors, etc. Check out the bulletin board by the Counseling Office and outside the cafeteria and listen to announcements for upcoming college events 2. College visits You get three excused absences as a senior to visit colleges, so take advantage! Best way to get a feel for a school and if it will be the right fit for you Attend College Representative Visits to Monroe High School 4. Testing All colleges require some kind of testing (ACT, SAT, COMPASS) Make sure you know which one you need to take and get it done early! 5. Complete applications online (Common App through Naviance) Make sure you have all of the application materials in by the deadline! This can include recommendation letters, transcripts, essays, test scores, etc. 6. Request transcripts to be sent Follow the directions for requesting a transcript through Naviance Make sure you request transcripts be sent 2 weeks before the deadline 7. Financial Aid and Scholarships The list of Scholarships and applications can be found on Naviance Complete the FAFSA beginning October 1 st.
