1 Graduate Employment Report 2010 Activities of Curtin Graduates who completed in 2009 Prepared by: Market and Institutional Research (MIR), Office of Strategy and Planning Curtin University of Technology Level 4 Building 100 Kent Street Bentley WA e: CurtinSurveys@curtin.edu.au March 2011 Graduate Employment Report 2010 (The activities of Curtin Graduates who completed in 2009)
2 INTRODUCTION The Graduate Employment 2010 Report provides information about the activities of students who completed their Curtin University course in 2009 at or via an Australian Campus. This report is intended as a guide to the success rate of 2009 graduates in finding employment following completion of their degree. The results are derived from a national survey, the Australian Graduate Survey (AGS) (a copy of this appears in Appendix One), which is conducted by Curtin University in association with Graduate Careers Australia (GCA). The survey is sent to graduates approximately four months after they complete a course of study. The Graduate Destination Survey (GDS) component of the survey collects information on the destination of graduates from tertiary institutions throughout Australia including: current employment situation (working full-time, part-time or looking for work) name of employer job title gross annual salary (in Australian dollars) country of employment sector of employment whether they were undertaking further studies. This report provides an indication of the employment and study activities of graduates at course, faculty and overall levels. A number of factors should be considered when reading this report. Firstly, students were sent the survey four months after graduation. Therefore, if a graduate took longer than four months to find employment, their employment details could not be collected. Secondly, the number of responses was often limited. Caution is advised when interpreting the results of courses with small numbers of respondents or a low response rate. Thirdly, there was some difficulty in ascertaining whether graduates were working in their chosen field of employment, as the GDS does not directly assess if graduates are working in their chosen field. This report provides GDS results (for all coursework and research respondents) at the following levels: 1. Curtin Overall (includes VC) 2. By Faculty 3. By Course Selected GDS results by course are available through the Course Review Data Portal The figures reported in the portal refer to the year of course completion, not survey year. More information about the GDS is available from: Reports are downloadable from: National information on graduate destinations can be obtained from Graduate Careers Australia at: For further information, please the Market and Institutional Research section on: CurtinSurveys@curtin.edu.au GDS Report Introduction 1
3 INTERPRETATION GUIDE Below is a guide for interpreting the results contained within this report. For further information on the methods used to perform the analysis, refer to Appendix Two. RESPONSE STATISTICS Number of Graduates: The number of students who completed their degree in 2009 and were eligible to complete the AGS. No. of Respondents: The number of graduates who responded to the GDS. FURTHER STUDY STATISTICS Studying full-time: The number of respondents who indicated they were studying full-time. Studying part-time: The number of respondents who indicated they were studying part-time. Total Studying: The number of respondents who indicated they were studying, regardless of time fraction. EMPLOYMENT STATISTICS No. Working full-time: The number of respondents who indicated they were working full-time. (The proportion in FT employment is charted). Number of Responses / Courses with No Respondents Not all respondents who completed the GDS completed all questions. Consequently the number of responses can vary from one question to another, and from one section to another. Unless otherwise specified, results are based on the opinions of those who provided a valid response to the survey question under consideration. For example, if no response was given these were excluded from analysis. Please note that some respondents indicated that they were studying full-time as well as working full-time. In this case the respondents were included in the figures for both employment and study, and were not excluded from the calculation of either figure. Rounding of Results Percentage totals may not add up to 100% due to rounding. GDS Report Introduction 3
5 RESPONSE STATISTICS Figure 1 shows the GDS response rates for while Figure 2 (overleaf) shows the GDS 2010 response rates by course. The formula used to derive the response rate is: GDS Response Rate = Number of respondents who answered the GDS Number of coursework and research students in the survey population Of the 8376 individuals who completed their course of study at Curtin University in 2009, 5587 responded to the Graduate Destinations Survey (67%). Science and Engineering (72%) recorded the highest response rate while Humanities recorded the lowest (62%).
