1 Please notice: You have to provide proof of sufficient if you wish to enrol for a major or minor subject at the Faculty of Humanities (see Only the following programmes are exempted from this regulation as they are taught in English: East Asian /Modern Sinology (major subject) English Philology (major and minor subject) North American (major and minor subject) Anglophone Literature and Culture (minor subject) Language in Focus: Linguistics and Medieval English (minor subject) Modern Indian (minor subject) Modern China (minor subject) Module Packets 36 Credits Module Packet 18 Credits Module Packet Indigenous American Applicants whose mother tongue is not English have to provide proof of sufficient English language knowledge (good reading skills). The proof of English language proficiency should be equivalent to UNIcert Level III. Ancient Oriental Ancient Oriental /Akkadian Ancient Oriental /Sumerology Anglophone Literature and Culture Ancient Cultures Ancient History Arabic /Islamic Verification of at least 18 credits in the field of Akkadian and Cuneiform. Academic achievement of at least 42 credits in the field of English Philology and of at least 12 credits in English language practice. i. Evidence of sufficient Latin language knowledge, at least on the level of the intermediate Latin proficiency certificate ( Kleines Latinum ). The evidence must be submitted within the second semester after enrolment. Pending that proof of language proficiency the enrolment is subject to conditions precedent. ii. Academic achievement in the field of Egyptology and Coptic, Ancient Oriental, Ancient Cultures, Classical Archaeology and Byzantine World, History, Greek Philology, Iranian, Cultural Anthropology, Latin Philology, Latin Philology of the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, Philology, Political Science or Religious of at least 36 credits, and at least 18 credits in the field of Ancient History. Proof of at least 30 credits in the field of Arabic Language. Alternatively, applicants can take a language examination. None. Verification of at least 18 credits in the field of Akkadian and Cuneiform is recommended. None. Verification of at least 18 credits in the field of Akkadian and Cuneiform is recommended. i. 2 Egyptology Egyptology and Coptic Chinese Christian Archaeology and Byzantine Art History English Philology Advanced knowledge in Middle-Egyptian language and the terminology of Egyptian grammar; competence in grammatical analysis of complex syntactical connections in classical Middle-Egyptian texts. If applicants cannot provide sufficient proof of Middle-Egyptian knowledge, they have to complete the following BA modules in addition: B.AegKo.22 and 23 (totalling 12 credits). i. Applicants with a native language other than modern Mandarin Chinese must possess sufficient knowledge of modern Mandarin Chinese. Evidence of sufficient language skills is to be furnished by passing an examination on level 5 of the Hànyu Shuipíng Kaoshì (HSK) test; instead of an HSK test certificate, the necessary language skills according to the HSK level 5 standard can also be proved by successful participation in the language aptitude test offered by Georg August University. ii. Applicants whose mother tongue is not English must demonstrate proficiency in the English language on level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Academic achievement in Classical and Byzantine Archaeology or related areas with a focus on Early Christian/Late Antiquity/Byzantine totalling at least 40 credits. Academic achievement of at least 42 credits in the field of English Philology and of at least 12 credits in English language practice. No admission requirements Academic achievement in Classical and Byzantine Archaeology or related areas with a focus on Early Christian/Late Antiquity/Byzantine totalling at least 20 credits. Academic achievement of at least 24 credits in the field of English Philology and of at least 6 credits in English language practice. Finno-Ugrian Gallo-Roman Applicants must possess knowledge of the Estonian, Finnish or Hungarian language including comprehensive knowledge of the grammatical structure of the respective language, as well as comprehension of texts of medium difficulty, and be able to communicate in complex discussions, and on topics from selected areas of regional and cultural studies. Basic knowledge of another second foreign language is also required. Proof is to be furnished by presenting evidence of successfully completed language courses at universities or by a university entrance qualification certificate of a school where the respective language is the language of instruction. i. Verification of sufficient French language knowledge on level C1 Applicants must possess knowledge of the Estonian, Finnish or Hungarian language including comprehensive knowledge of the grammatical structure of the respective language, as well as comprehension of texts of medium difficulty, and be able to communicate in complex discussions, and on topics from selected areas of regional and cultural studies. 3 German /German Philology History Greek Philology ii. Verification of academic achievement in French/Gallo-Roman or a closely related subject of at least 40 credits. German Philology or a closely related subject of at least 6 semesters in length. Academic achievement in History of at least 51 credits, including achievement of Medieval and Modern History totalling at least 6 credits each. Intermediate Latin proficiency certificate ( Kleines Latinum ) and Greek proficiency certificate ( Graecum ). ii. Verification of academic achievement in French/Gallo-Roman or a closely related subject of at least 40 credits. German Philology or a closely related subject with a study period of at least 3 semesters. Spanish Indology i. Verification of sufficient Spanish language knowledge on level C1 ii. Verification of academic achievement in Spanish/Hispanic or a closely related subject of at least 40 credits. Applicants whose mother tongue is not Hindi, must provide evidence of sufficient knowledge in Hindi or Sanskrit. The proof of language proficiency should be provided by the successful completion of the modules B.Ind.41 and B.Ind.51 or equivalent academic achievement. i. Verification of sufficient Spanish language knowledge on level C1 ii. Verification of academic achievement in Spanish/Hispanic or a closely related subject of at least 40 credits. No admission requirements Intercultural German Academic achievement in the following areas totalling at least 50 credits: German language, literature and culture; the history of literature and art; comparative literature; theory, methodology and didactics of German as a foreign language / German as a second language; applied cultural studies; cultural anthropology / ethnology; gender studies or in language, literature and culture, methodology and didactics of another philology. Iranian Academic achievement in Iranian totalling at least 50 credits, including knowledge of modern Persian (at least 27 credits) and knowledge of the cultural history of Iran (at least 12 credits). Knowledge of modern Persian (at least 27 credits). Islamic Law Proof of at least 30 credits in the field of Arabic Language. Alternatively, applicants can take a language examination. Italian i. Verification of sufficient Italian language knowledge on level B2+ i. Verification of sufficient Italian language knowledge on level B2+ 3

4 ii. Verification of academic achievement in Italian or a closely related subject of at least 40 credits. Classical Archaeology Academic achievement in the field of Archaeology totalling at least 24 credits. ii. Verification of academic achievement in Italian or a closely related subject of at least 40 credits. Academic achievement in the field of Archaeology totalling at least 18 credits. Comparative Literature Verification is required of academic achievement in general and comparative literary science (comparative literature) or in an individual philology with a scope of at least 45 credits, including credits in the field of literary science totalling at least 17 credits. Coptic Cultural Anthropology/European Ethnology Cultural Musicology Advanced knowledge in Coptic language and its dialects, as well as in the grammatical terminology; competence in grammatical analysis of complex syntactical connections in Coptic texts. If applicants cannot provide sufficient proof of Coptic language knowledge, they have to complete the following BA modules in addition: B.AegKo.24 and 25 (totalling 12 credits). a) Academic achievement must be verified in the cultural-scientific subjects of the humanities and social sciences totalling at least 50 credits, including achievement either in methods of field research or cultural history as well as achievement in the area of cultural theory of at least 12 credits. b) Applicants must additionally have earned at least 6 credits in the fundamentals of cultural anthropology/european ethnology. At the time of application, verification of academic performance in Musicology is required, totalling at least 66 credits. At the time of application, verification of academic performance in Musicology is required, totalling at least 18 credits. Art History Language in Focus: Linguistics and Medieval English Latin Philology Verification required of academic achievement in Art History or Art Sciences totalling at least 18 credits. Academic achievement of at least 42 credits in the field of English Philology and of at least 12 credits in English language practice. Intermediate Latin proficiency certificate ( Kleines Latinum ) and Greek proficiency certificate ( Graecum ). Verification required of academic achievement in Art History or Art Sciences totalling at least 8 credits. 4

5 Latin Philology of the Middle Ages and the Modern Era General Linguistics *Linguistic Anthropology and Indigenous American no longer offered for new students *Linguistic Anthropology no longer offered for new students Portuguese a) academic achievement in Latin Philology of the Middle Ages or Latin Philology of the Middle Ages and the Modern Era or in a closely related subject of at least 45 credits or b) academic achievement in Classical or Latin Philology totalling at least 45 credits or c) Latin proficiency certificate ( Latinum ) or equivalent achievement. Applicants need to seek study specific advising before application (proof. Special Regulation: It is possible to write a Master's thesis within the 36-credit module package. If the Master's thesis is to be written in the field of mediaeval and modern Latin philology, the following additional 6 C module must be completed successfully: M.MNL.11 Research trends and topics in the area of mediaeval and modern Latin philology (6 C). If the examination candidate is already required to complete another module in conjunction with the Master's thesis as part of the degree programme in which the candidate is enrolled, the module M.MNL.11 is replaced by the module M.MNL.10 Reading of central texts from mediaeval and modern Latin literature (6 C). Academic achievement of at least two modules or part-modules from the corn areas of theoretical linguistics (Phonetics/Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics, Pragmatics). Applicants whose mother tongue is not English have to provide proof of sufficient English language knowledge (good reading skills). The proof of English language proficiency should be equivalent to UNIcert Level III. Special Regulation: It is possible to write a Master s thesis within the 36-credit module package. If the Master s thesis is to be written in the field of linguistic anthropology and ancient American studies, the following additional module must be completed successfully: M.LingAm.6 Final module of Master s degree programme (6 C) i. Verification of sufficient Portuguese language knowledge on level B2+ Intermediate Latin proficiency certificate ( Kleines Latinum ). Applicants need to seek study specific advising before application (proof. 6 Medieval and Renaissance North American Modern China ii. Verification of academic achievement in Portuguese or a closely related subject of at least 40 credits. See module packet Latin Philology of the Middle Ages and the Modern Era a) Proof of 50 credits obtained in the field of North American, or b) Proof of 50 credits obtained in the field of English Philology, including at least 14 credits in American literature and cultural history or American literature and cultural theory, or c) Proof of 50 credits obtained in the field of General Literature/Comparative Literature or Social Science or History, including at least 14 credits from courses pertaining to the study of North America. Language Skills Applicants whose mother language is not English must demonstrate sufficient English language skills by earning the minimum required grade on an internationally recognized test: a) Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, graded at least with "C", b) "International English Language Testing System" (IELTS), minimum level Band 7, c) a minimum of 587 points in the paper-based "Test of English as a Foreign Language" (paper-based TOEFL), d) a minimum of 94 points in the new internet-based TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language, e) UNIcert, level III, f) C1 Certificate according to CEF (Common European Framework). As a rule, the last test must have been taken no more than two years prior to submission of the application for admission to the Master's degree programme (date received). Applicants who have spent at least one year studying or working in an English-speaking country during the two years prior to the submission of their admissions application (date received) are exempt from this requirement. Moreover, exemptions apply to applicants who have successfully completed a degree or partial degree programme in the English language (proof. Evidence of credits in sinology to the extent of at least 42 C must be submitted, including credits totalling at least 24 C in at least two of the following areas: history, religion, politics, society, philosophy, ii. 7 linguistics, economy or law of modern China. New German Literature. History - Theory - Mediation Knowledge of modern Mandarin Chinese on level B1.1 and knowledge of English on level B2. The verification of sufficient English language knowledge must be submitted within the first semester of study. German Philology or Literary or a closely related subject of at least 6 semesters in length. German Philology or Literary or a closely related subject with a study period of at least 3 semesters. Eastern European History No admission requirements No admission requirements Philosophy Academic achievement in Philosophy totalling at least 18 credits. Academic achievement in Philosophy totalling at least 18 credits. Religious Academic achievement in Religious totalling at least 18 credits. Academic achievement in Religious totalling at least 18 credits. Scandinavian Ancient Scandinavian Scandinavian or a closely related subject of at least 6 semesters in length. Scandinavian or a closely related subject of at least 6 semesters in length. a Philology or Cultural with focus on Medieval. Modern Scandinavian a Philology or Cultural with focus on Modern Literature or Literary/Cultural. Scandinavian Languages No admission requirements Slavic Philology i. Sufficient language skills in one of the following Slavic languages: Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Polish, Russian, Czech or Ukrainian on Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (verification. As a rule, the verification of sufficient language skills must have been acquired no more than two years prior to submission of the application for admission to the Master's degree programme. Applicants who have spent at least nine months studying or working in a Slavic-speaking country during the three years prior to the submission of their application are exempt from this requirement. ii. Academic achievement in a Philology totalling at least 51 credits. a. Sufficient language skills in one of the following Slavic languages: Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Polish, Russian, Czech or Ukrainian on Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (verification. As a rule, the verification of sufficient language skills must have been acquired no more than two years prior to submission of the application for admission to the Master's degree programme. Applicants who have spent at least nine months studying or working in a Slavic-speaking country during the three years prior to the submission of their application are exempt from this requirement. b. Academic achievement in a Philology totalling at least 51 credits. Transcontinental Modern European History Academic achievement in History with a scope of at least 51 credits, including achievement of Modern History totalling at least 6 credits 7

TransRomania : Romance languages, literatures and cultures Turkology/Turkish Prehistory and Early History See module packets Gallo-Roman /Italian /Spanish /Portuguese Sufficient Turkish language knowledge; academic achievement in Turkology/Turkish totalling at least 50 credits, including achievement in advanced Turkish language of at least 6 credits; academic achievement of at least 24 credits must be verified in the area of Turkish language acquisition. Academic achievement in Prehistory and Early History totalling at least 18 credits. Jewish studies, 18 C Modern Indian German language skills Academic achievement in Modern Hebrew totalling at least 6 credits. Academic achievement in Social Science, Humanities or Economics totalling at least 33 credits. ii. Verification of sufficient English language knowledge by earning the minimum required grade on an internationally recognized test: a) Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, graded at least with "C", b) "International English Language Testing System" (IELTS), minimum level Band 6, c) a minimum of 550 points in the paper-based "Test of English as a Foreign Language" (paper-based TOEFL), 8
