1 Delton Kellogg High School Weekly Newsletter November 10, 2017 Responsibility As DKS continues its character education initiative, November has been dedicated as "responsibility" month, With that in mind we ask all parents to encourage their student to take responsibility for both successes and failures and to use each as a learning experience to enhance the likelihood of further achievement. 2 Winter Sports Begin: High School boy's basketball (5:15 pm) and High School wrestling (3:00 pm) will hold their first official practices of the upcoming season on Monday, November 13th. High School swimming and diving will begin on November 20th with at time to be determined. As a reminder, all student athletes must have an updated physical form on file with the Athletic Office in order to participate in any practices and/or games. If you have any questions, please contact the Athletic Office at Delton Craft Show - Saturday, November 11 from 9a - 3p in the Delton Middle School. Filling the Gymnasium, several hallways & cafeteria. Lots of NEW crafters & vendors this year. Handmade jewelry, wool mittens, painted glass ornaments, woodwork, candles, rugs, soaps, chalk signs, and much much more. SHOP LOCAL for your gift giving this holiday season. Several school organizations selling items: Senior Mystery Trip, Delton Washington DC trip, Panther Paws 4H, F.F.A. & 4th grade wreath sales to help with the trip to Mackinac. 3 Scholarship Month November has officially been declared scholarship month in Michigan! All month long, MI Student Aid will be actively posting on social media to celebrate. We will be highlighting our very own scholarship database, compiled of Michigan scholarships, where students can submit a request and get scholarships sent right to their inbox. We will have tips and tricks for filling out the perfect scholarship application in order to help students with their search. We will also be discussing the various scholarships and grants programs provided by the State of Michigan as well as other resources, beyond scholarships, that can help make college Accessible, Affordable and Achievable for Michigan students and families. 4 Senior Reminder

5 AP Biology students have been working on rates of diffusion in different size and shapes of cells. This helps them understand why cell size is limited and in multi-cellular organisms, the cells in mutli-cellular organisms work together as tissues and tissue systems to complete cellular work.

10 Forensic Science: Students in forensic science class have been working on the Sherlock Bones Lab this week. They have been learning how to measure bones to determine gender, ethnicity, and age.

11 A huge thank you to Delton Alum Mike McCullough who has given to Delton so generously in so many ways over the years. Mike s recent gift supporting our Character Education program has allowed us to purchase banners for each building, as well as banners for local businesses to display and partner with our commitment to being people of character. Every classroom now has a wall hanging displaying our traits that we think are critical for our students. We also now have magnets to give away to celebrate students who are caught showing any of our 7 important traits. Thank You Mr. McCullough for your generosity and support. Dorm Life There will be a National Honor Society Meeting Tuesday morning in the High School Media Center at 7:35. Members must attend or make arrangements with Mrs. Poignard beforehand.

12 In addition to the college application process, students are also busy exploring other options outside of the college or university path. Our students have been on tours of many manufacturing companies in Barry County including TNR, Hastings Fiberglass, Chem-Quest, RMTC and others. Hands on exposure to different trades and manufacturing positions have many of our students excited about starting a career with paid training and certification opportunities rather than going to college initially. Regardless of the path they choose, Delton is committed to supporting our graduates as they prepare for the world of work. A big SHOUT OUT to our students who went on these trips who received multiple compliments from workers, business owners and managers, and presenters. During a lunch stop in Hastings on one of our trips an elderly couple pulled staff aside to comment on the impressive manners, and respect that our students demonstrated. We are proud of those students who represented us in a positive way out in public. That is good DK Character being lived out!! 14 October has been a busy month in the areas of college and career readiness. More than 20 colleges and industry leaders have visited with our upperclassmen. We have been busy applying to colleges, completing our necessary FAFSA forms, as well as some students having begun the scholarship search. Many incentives have been awarded to students who have completed applications for admissions. Nearly 40 of our juniors and seniors recently toured Grand Valley State University, and met with their Director of Admissions. Dorm Life
