Anticipated Enrollment & Impact...4 Revenue & Expenses...4 Marketing...5 Staffing and Administration...5 Appendix Appendix Overview Applied Anthropology is the application of anthropological methods, theories, perspectives, and data to evaluate and resolve social problems, analyze and inform public policy, and address the practical needs of community organizations, businesses, and the public and private sectors. Applied Anthropology encompasses all of anthropology s subdisciplines: archaeology, biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, and linguistic anthropology. The Certificate in Applied Anthropology emphasizes the methodological skills and professional practices necessary for employment as an applied anthropologist. Particular focus will be paid to the ethical considerations inherent in applied work, research methods, data gathering and analysis, and proposal writing. Students will learn the benefits as well as the challenges of working for community-based organizations, non-governmental organizations, cultural resource management groups and other public and private sector employers. Students will design, research, and implement a project that directly benefits an organization or members of a community. Certificate candidates are expected to present their project to the organization or community or at a colloquium, professional meeting, or conference. Background The Certificate in Applied Anthropology was originally approved by the Arts & Sciences Council on 2 May 2007 (see Appendix 1). The is proposing several curricular changes to the program so that the certificate can be offered in an asynchronous online format. Moving the certificate online is one component of the Open SUNY Online Program Loan that SUNY Potsdam has recently received to enhance our online course and program offerings.

2 We expect that the online certificate will attract at least three populations: (1) students enrolled at SUNY Potsdam, particular those seeking the flexibility of online learning; (2) students enrolled at other colleges, particularly in SUNY, in Anthropology programs that do not have a substantial applied focus (majors, minors); () professionals (anthropologists but also other social scientists) seeking easily accessible professional development opportunities. Admission Those who wish to pursue the certificate must have completed introductory coursework or had significant professional experience in one of the subfields of anthropology (archaeology, biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology). Majors in anthropology or archaeological studies in good academic standing will be automatically considered for application. Students seeking to enter the Certificate in Applied Anthropology program must submit a letter of intent for approval by the chair of the or the chair s designee. Dropping ANTH 9 / ANTH 19: These courses fulfill requirements for the SUNY Potsdam Anthropology and Archaeological Studies majors, respectively, so students in our Department will fulfill this requirement. Increasingly, other majors (at SUNY Potsdam and at other colleges) are including experiences similar to those in ANTH 0 and 19 (e.g., grant

3 writing, resume building, ethics, preparation for graduate school) in their major requirements, so many of these students will have training in these areas. Professionals who are pursuing the Certificate as a professional development opportunity will likely have these skills already. 2. In addition to the name change for ANTH 40 (to lessen confusion with ANTH 05), the course will now also cover quantitative data collection and analysis. This will expose our students to the range of methods they will likely encounter as professionals engaging in applied research. To insure students are adequately prepared, STAT 100 (or its equivalent) is a prerequisite. The changes to ANTH 40 have been submitted to Banner.. Previously, each student involved in the research phase of the Certificate would enroll in their own internship (ANTH 491). To better serve an expanded cohort (and to address equity in faculty workload) all students conducting applied research for the Certificate will enroll in a -6 credit research seminar, ANTH 496 for each semester they are actively engaged in research. This course has been tentatively approved by the A&S Curriculum Committee; it is pending final approval after minor changes have been submitted. 4. In addition to the curricular changes noted in 1- above, the Certificate will move to a 100% online instructional format. Certificate Requirements 1. The certificate will be available to both matriculated and nonmatriculated students who have completed introductory course work in anthropology; 2. Students must submit a letter of intent to the Chair of the (or designee);. Courses fulfilling Certificate requirements may also fulfill requirements for the major or minor, but students may only double count two courses; 4. Students must earn a grade of 2.0 or greater in courses that are counted towards the certificate; 5. There will be no substitutions of courses that count towards the completion of the certificate; 6. The Chair of the (or designee) will certify the completion of certificate requirements; 7. Students must complete the certificate requirements within five years. Course Descriptions ANTH 05 Applying Anthropology ( cr.) Today, about one-half of all professional anthropologists work in non-academic settings. Applied, or practicing, anthropologists may be trained in any or all of the sub-fields of anthropology and work in various contexts. This course will build on the ways in which anthropological theory and method are used practically in occupations related to health and medicine, international development, environment, government, business and education, immigration and poverty. Through an exploration of case studies, students will come to understand the ethical, financial, social, methodological and practical issues of applying anthropological theory to real-life situations. Prerequisite: ANTH 201, 202, 20, 204 or 270. ANTH 40 Applied Anthropological Methods (4 cr.) In this course students will apply anthropological theory and methodology to real world

4 situations. Students will learn applied research methods to include participant observation, interviewing, conducting focus groups, surveying, as well as qualitative and quantitative data analysis. The course will also address ethical issues in applied research. Field work experience will be an essential feature of this course. Prerequisite: STAT 100 (or equivalent). ANTH 49 Applied Anthropological Research ( -6 cr.) Students enrolled in this course will work under the direction of a faculty member to conduct substantive and original applied research. Students will demonstrate proficiency in qualitative/quantitative data gathering and analysis. They will present their research at a department colloquium or professional meeting. Prerequisite: permission of instructor. Anticipated Enrollment & Impact The Certificate was popular with our students when we began offering it in September 2007, with one to four students enrolling in the program each year. However, with the move of the department s applied anthropologist into an administrative position and the concomitant reassignment of 50% of his teaching load, it became difficult to offer ANTH 40 on a regular basis and interest in the Certificate languished. Projected enrollment, from the Open SUNY Online Program Loan proposal, is seven students in Years 1-2, ten students in Years -4, and fifteen students in Years 5+. With the current average number of Anthropology majors, there are approximately seats available each spring semester in ANTH 05. This will allow for up to additional Certificate students in the course. Should enrollment in the Certificate (or Anthropology major) exceed the capacity of the course, additional sections will need to be staffed. ANTH 40 has been offered irregularly for the past six years. It is likely that it will not reach its current cap of 15 until Year 5 through students pursuing the Certificate; thus, it will provide an additional upper-division elective option for our on-campus students. The addition of the STAT 100 prerequisite to ANTH 40 may impact that course on our campus, although non-suny Potsdam students pursuing the Certificate will likely take this course online through Open SUNY or at their home institutions. Revenue & Expenses The Enrollment/Revenue/Expenses schedule for the Open SUNY Online Loan is attached as Appendix 2. In summary: 1. For FA2018-SU 2019 (Year 1) anticipated enrollment in the online Certificate is 7 students, with $20,650 of income generated on $7,254 in expenses; 2. In FA2020-SU2021 (Year ) anticipated enrollment is 10 students, with $8,180 of income and $14,274 of expenses;. In FA2022-SU202 (Year 5) anticipated enrollment is 15 students, with $56,925 of income and $14,784 of expenses. By the end of Year 5, we project that the Certificate will have brought in over $100,000 of additional revenue to the college.

5 Marketing Per the Open SUNY Online Program Loan agreement, the will work with the SUNY Potsdam Office of College Communications to market and promote the online Certificate in Applied Anthropology. Staffing and Administration The department has recently hired a 2-year visiting applied anthropologist. Part of the teaching load for that faculty member will be assisting with the development (and potentially teaching) of the online ANTH 05, 40, and 496. Interim Assistant Provost Hersker and Department Chair Kruczek-Aaron will provide administrative support for the program for at least the first five years.

In the internship, students will design, research, and implement a project that benefits members of a community. Certificate candidates will be expected to present their project at a department colloquium and a professional meeting or conference. The certificate program is by application only. Majors in anthropology or archaeological studies in good academic standing will be automatically considered for application. It is strongly recommended that students who are not majoring in anthropology or in archeological studies have a minor in anthropology, archaeological studies, biological anthropology, medical anthropology, or museum studies. Students who do not must have the approval of the chair of the or the chair s designee and significant coursework in anthropology. Prerequisite: One -credit 200-level anthropology course (ANTH 201 Human Origins, ANTH 202 Cultural Anthropology, ANTH 20 Language and Culture, ANTH 204 Archaeology, ANTH 270 Museum Studies) Required: ANTH 05 Applying Anthropology (spring) ANTH 9 Professionalism in Anthropology (fall) or ANTH 19 Public and Private Archaeology (spring) ANTH 40 Applied Anthropology (fall) ANTH 491 Internship in Applied Anthropology Certificate Requirements: Regular SUNY Potsdam admissions requirements apply The certificate will be available to both matriculated and nonmatriculated students who have completed significant course work in anthropology.

Spring. ANTH 9 Professionalism in Anthropology () This course covers both practical and theoretical aspects of the discipline. Topics include ethics, careers, and preparation of resumes, graduate school and grant proposal applications. Fall. ANTH 19 Public and Private Archaeology () This course is designed to help you prepare to be a professional archaeologist in the twenty-first century. Today, archaeologists find employment in a variety of institutions both inside and outside of academia. Although career options are numerous, there are certain fundamental skills that all archaeologists should possess to successfully and professionally operate in the modern world. These include, but are not limited to, good communication, presentation, and writing skills, and a working knowledge of legal and ethical issues within the discipline. In this course students will learn about the varied employment opportunities for archaeologists, develop knowledge and skills they will need as professional archaeologists, and produce tangible materials using these skills that will help them successfully enter the professional world of archaeology in the twenty-first century. Spring. ANTH 40 Applied Anthropology (4) This course will introduce students to the application of anthropological theory and methodology in real world situations. Fieldwork experience will be an essential feature of this course. Fall. ANTH 491 Internship in Applied Anthropology (-6) The intern will apply anthropological methods, theories, perspectives, and data to meet the needs of a public or private sector organization. Potential projects may include evaluating and resolving social problems, implementing and analyzing public policy, or addressing the practical needs of community organizations or businesses. Students will work under the direction of a faculty

8 member and a representative of the sponsoring organization. Interns will be expected to present their project at a department colloquium and a professional meeting or conference. Prerequisite: permission of the instructor, ANTH 05, ANTH 40, and either ANTH 9 or ANTH 19.

The Certificate program is a semester sequence with a minimum of courses total. The projected revenue is based on students taking one -credit course, then one 4-credit course, then one -credit course. Budgeting for the bare minimum cohort size, so no retention percentages considered. Students may elect to do -6 credits for their last semester. Budgeted all at credits, again the bare minimum. It is possible that this certificate also will yield out of state tuition because it will be beneficial professional development for those in the discipline. Projected start date of program is Fall ANTH 05 (fall course) is also a required major course, so empty online seats may be used by existing majors, therefore, also being a service to the department. ANTH 40 (spring course) is an elective with the major. So this course may also be taken by exisitng majors and serve the department.
