2 About this course This Higher National course is ideal for students who aspire to be the computing professionals of the future and who can help improve their organisation s productivity, performance and competitiveness. You will be helping to run the College s student IT company, Tech Smart Solutions, and can study over one or two years depending on your particular needs and requirements. Parttime and full-time delivery models are available and the course can also be taken as part of a Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship framework. More than just a course! This Higher National course specialises in nurturing the business managers and computing professionals of the future leaders who can help improve their organisation s productivity, performance and competitiveness. The skills you develop on our Computing courses will broaden your career scope, helping you to hit the ground running in a new job and putting rapid promotion prospects within your grasp. All courses in our Computer department are underpinned by close links with employers and we boast an excellent network of contacts across many different sectors. The development of Employability Skills is a key thread running throughout the course. It offers a strong, sector-related emphasis on practical skills development alongside the development of requisite knowledge and understanding. 3 Length of study There are a number of pathways than can be taken on a full-time or part-time basis to meet your particular needs. You can also start your programme in September or February. Full Time: 120 credits are completed in one year Part-Time: 120 credits are completed in two years On a part-time course, attendance is over one day per week. Depending on demand, there may be the possibility of completing part-time HNC courses in the evening. You will need to discuss this further with a member of staff during your interview. For a full-time course, you will be expected to attend College over 2/3 days per week. On all pathways, significant additional study will be required outside College hours to be successful on this programme. What will I study? HNC (Full-time 1 year) Business Skills for e-commerce Computer Systems Employability and Professional Development Human Computer Interaction Website Design Database Design Concepts Event Driven Programming Solutions Data Analysis and Design HNC (Part-time 2 years) You will complete the same units as the HNC Full-time) course but over 2 years.

4 What skills will I develop? The course has been designed to enable you to develop the following skills during the programme of study: analysing, synthesising and summarising information critically the ability to read and use appropriate literature with a full and critical understanding the ability to think independently and take responsibility for your own learning obtaining and integrating several lines of subject-specific evidence to formulate and test hypotheses applying subject knowledge and understanding to address familiar and unfamiliar problems recognising the moral and ethical issues surrounding computing and IT the ability to undertake investigations of computer systems in a responsible, safe and ethical manner an appreciation of the interdisciplinary nature of computing the capacity to give a clear and accurate account of a subject, marshal arguments in a mature way and engage in debate and dialogue both with specialists and nonspecialists. How will I be assessed? Assessment methods include: Case Studies Reports and written assignments Oral presentations Practical Assessments Individual project work Data analysis Portfolios of evidence All successfully completed units are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction. Each grade achieves points with the final qualification grade dependent on the accumulation of these points.

5 Entry Requirements You will need to be 18 years of age on or before 31st August of the academic year that the programme commences to complete the programme. Admission to the programme in 2017/18 would normally be on the basis of you possessing attainment from a previous course of study, and/or relevant experience, which may be ascertained by the following:- A minimum of 48 UCAS points which may be gained from the following qualifications or combinations of qualifications: GCE A Level or AS level passes 90 Credit Diploma, Diploma or Extended Diploma A Diploma or equivalent such as NVQ, GNVQ, International Baccalaureate, Scottish Certificate of Education An Access to HE Course Any other relevant international qualifications You can find out how many points your qualifications are awarded by using the UCAS Tariff look-up tables on the UCAS website. In addition, GCSE Maths and English Language (Grade C or above), or equivalent is required. We also welcome students with relevant work experience subject to a successful interview. All learners who are non-native English speakers or who have not studied the final two years of school in English, will need to demonstrate capability in English at a standard commensurate with: IELTS 5.5, with a minimum of 5.0 being awarded on individual sections for a level 4 or 5 qualification IELTS 6.5 for a level 6 or 7 qualification What can I do after this course? Progression to the Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Computing and Systems Development for one further year of study, or to undergraduate study in a related computing programme, or directly to employment in the sector. 7 Additional information including fees The tuition fees for the HNC are as follows: HNC 1 year Full-Time: 5500 HNC 2 years Part-Time: 2750 per year Key points regarding Tuition Fees: If you never earn more than 21,000 per year, you never pay anything back. If you stop earning more than 21,000 at any time your payment stops. If you wish, you can repay your loan in full at any time with no penalties added. Your employer can pay part of the fees, with you paying the rest through a loan. If you don t pay off the loan within 30 years, the Government will write off the outstanding amount.
