2 Introduction Events and Activities for Schools and Colleges 2014/2015 Our programme of events and activities for students in Years 6 13 aims to raise their aspirations and awareness of Higher Education and Northumbria University. We offer a range of workshops, interactive activities and presentations both on and off campus. Our on campus events are a great opportunity for students to visit the campus and find out more about university and specifically, Northumbria University. We also offer activities that can be delivered at your school/college and are tailored to suit. This guide outlines the range of events and activities available to you and your students throughout the 14/15 academic year. 3 Year 7 University Unzipped An interactive drama based programme which helps refocus students aspirations following the transition from primary to secondary school November 2014 In School Year 7 & 8 A Day in the Life Of Year 6 ASC (Apprentice Students on Campus) This is an opportunity for students to spend a day on campus, taking part in fun activities and sports and get a taste of what it is like to be a student and how Higher Education could be an option for them November June 2015 This workshop will give students an insight into university life in an interactive environment using guided discovery learning. Through a range of activities we aim to highlight the accessibility of university, breaking down any barriers towards Higher Education through stereotypical perceptions regarding finance, academic ability and socio-economic background. 4 Year 8 Star Student Year 9 HE Focus A giant board game that subtly introduces the concept of Higher Education using interactive team challenges. Delivered in schools by current undergraduate students, the game covers topics ranging from finance to social life. The programme gives students the chance to meet current undergraduate students, tour the campus and investigate various routes into and through Higher Education, starting with and focusing on their GCSE options & February April - 3 May 2015 Creativity November 2014 February 2015 (Every Wednesday and Friday) In School Year 9 Course Pursuit This workshop is delivered as a fun interactive game to increase awareness of available courses within Higher Education. The game consists of various rounds in which teams of students will compete against each other. These rounds encourage Year 9 students to carefully consider the educational choices they are making from this year onwards. 5 Year 10 & Year 11 Choices Together This programme is specifically tailored for Looked After Young People and includes club membership, club trip and celebratory events. This programme is delivered collaboratively as part of the Raising Aspirations Partnership (RAP) 4, 7, 11, 25 February , 25, 28 March 2015 *Subject to Student Eligibility Criteria Year 11 Future 11 Future 11 supports the transition between years 11 and 12 and helps students to understand the impact their decisions can make on their future education choices as well as the importance of developing study skills and goal setting June 2015 or in School Researching Decision-making 8 For more information visit northumbria.ac.uk/studentrecruitment 9

6 Year 12/1st year college Subject Taster Days Year 12/1st year college Summer School Subject Taster days provide Year 12/ 1st year college students and adult learners with a taste of what life at a university is like. Through a subject specific taster course they will experience the different teaching methods used by university academics and gain an insight into the additional facilities available. Legal Taster days are ideal for anyone thinking about studying Law at university, or considering a career in the legal profession. Students will find out what it is like to be a student at Northumbria Law School, meet our staff and students, and be offered the chance to dress up in wigs and gowns to take part in a Mock Trial in our very own on campus Courtroom. They will also be given a tour of our fantastic facilities which include a comprehensive Law library, Courtroom, and our Queen s Award winning Student Law Office. Aspire to be... is an interactive taster tailored specifically for students interested in learning more or pursuing a career in Education, Social Work, Childhood Studies, Early Years, Guidance and Counselling or Disability Studies. Health Alive is an interactive learning event tailored for students studying health-related qualifications or wishing to pursue a career in health care. We hope the event will highlight how exciting, challenging and diverse careers in the health profession can be. Various dates throughout the year Researching Independence *Subject to Student Eligibility Criteria A two night, three day residential enabling students to experience university life through academic workshops, sports and social activities. Year 12 & 13/1st year college & 2nd year college EVOLVE Evolve offers schools and colleges the opportunity to tailor make a programme of workshops specific to the needs and interests of their students. 7 Year 12 & 13/1st year college & 2nd year college Subject Specific Activity In addition to our raising aspirations and Higher Education awareness activities, we are also able to offer a range of opportunities for you and your students to find out more about our subjects and individual departments. Please contact us to discuss. Completion Degree Taster Days For students who are studying towards an HND or equivalent. Find out how to gain an honours degree. School Visits in all subject areas If joining us on campus is not an option, then our staff are more than happy to come to your school. We offer flexible sessions to suit the needs of your students, including presentations, and interactive workshops. Conferences We host subject specific conferences aimed at year 12, year 13 and college students which compliment the curriculum. English, History, Psychology, Sociology, Sport, Criminology, and Geography conferences are delivered on campus from December-April each year. Employability through Languages. A conference to show potential career progression following a languages degree at Northumbria University. We host a number of events on campus and in London showcasing the talent of our graduating students from across all creative disciplines. Higher Education Advisers and Teachers Conference The conference aims to inform delegates about topical issues relating to Higher Education. The programme has been designed for teachers, advisers, tutors and other professionals involved in the provision of information, advice and guidance to students. This event is delivered collaboratively as part of the Raising Aspirations Partnership (RAP) 16 October 2014 Courses for Teachers We offer a range of Continuing Professional opportunities for schools and teachers ranging from Postgraduate courses including MEd Education with Curriculum, MA Education Leadership, Education in Professional Practice, MEd Education with Teaching and Learning and MA Fine Art and Education. We offer a range of postgraduate diplomas and degrees specifically designed for teachers. To find out more visit northumbria.ac.uk/pg University Explained (Parents and Carers Information Day) A chance for parents and carers to visit a university campus and take part in informal sessions to address common concerns about University and Higher Education. The day aims to help parents/carers understand the decisions that their son/daughter will have to make if they are considering Higher Education. This event is delivered collaboratively as part of the Raising Aspirations Partnership (RAP) 7 March 2015 Open Day All welcome but particularly useful for Year 12/1st year college students. 8 Presentations in Schools/Colleges We are able to offer a comprehensive programme of talks on Higher Education in schools and colleges. We also regularly attend school/college Higher Education/ Careers events for students and parents. Please contact us to discuss your requirements*. *These requests will be dealt with on an individual basis and whilst we will endeavour to support all requests, our attendance is subject to staff availability. October 2014 July 2015 Campus Tours A current student will guide visitors around the campus showing our facilities at either our City or Coach Lane Campus. All are welcome, but this may be particularly useful for Year 12/13, 1st/2nd year college students. Every Wednesday afternoon, October July 2015 UCAS Conventions Staff attend UCAS events across the UK to answer questions and inform prospective students about the courses and facilities available at Northumbria University.
