National Seminar On Professionalization of Education: Problems & Opportunities in India (4-5 th December 2014) Venue: R.K. Hall, Faculty of Arts, BHU, Varanasi:
Modern age is the age of skillful knowledge that can serve the society, organization either in educational institutions or service organizations. Since in the last many decades there has been a cry that knowledge without use is useless. This is the scenario of the world at large irrespective of the nations -- developed, developing or underdeveloped. In spite of this fact, it has been seen that there are still a large number of institutions especially run by governments, and institutions located at rural areas are generally focusing on traditional type of education that has little to do in quest of rendering services to the community people and subsequently may become the source of their low quality living. It is indeed a fact, that traditional education is time-consuming and do not provide opportunities for getting early be-fitting job whereas, vocational or professional education is a well-directed and planned way of perusing education that provide ample opportunity for getting early and befitting jobs and subsequently will keep job seekers to enjoy high quality of life. With regard to professionalization of education, it is to say that educational institutions must have their fingers on the nerves of the market where most demanded jobs are available or likely to be created in near future because if in accordance with the job market conditions, if education and training are provided then there are most likely enhances and people will get employment at the earliest without losing their career tenure. In fact, in this modern age, there is a fast pace of technological development and for that reason every moment new courses are coming up to cater the requirements of the new jobs. However, it has been observed that government institutions lag behind in visualizing the changing scenario of the world of work with regard to the conditions and nature of job opportunities attracting the people in the job market hence, as a result generally most students are pursuing traditional education which has no or little direction as well as involves a time-consuming process in getting proper job. The educationists, experts and other participants may deliberate on the present pattern of the educational institutions and the problems they are facing in opening professional/vocational courses and linking these courses with the opportunities in the job market through interaction during the course of Seminar which may be highly fruitful for motivating and promoting Institutions to go for vocational/professional courses that may subsequently promote and enhance the quality of life of youths in India by getting be-fitting job at the early age. Keeping of this in mind a two days National Seminar on Professionalization of Education: Problems and Opportunities in India. Vision of the Seminar: The vision of the Seminar is to provide a platform for deliberations on the following sub-themes to know and identify the problems, opportunities and remedial
strategies to motivate the Institutional Heads for giving main focus on job-oriented courses and students to pursue such type of courses, which are given as under:- 1. Problems and limitations in opening vocational/professional courses. 2. Attitude towards female education especially professional/vocational courses. 3. Role of professional/vocational education for the cultural advancement 4. Utility-oriented education. 5. Motivation of students towards education in general and professional education in particular. 6. Personal and financial problems as barriers in pursuing professional education: Challenges and remedies 7. Information dissemination mechanisms pertaining to the benefits of professional/vocational courses 8. Motivating mechanisms for students for pursuing vocational/professional courses 9. Any other relevant issue with regard to the theme. Having deliberated on the above theme/sub-themes, it is visualized that Institutions may comeout to think of focusing much more on to vocational courses of studies. Moreover, better strategies may also be designed for attracting students towards such courses through effective information dissemination techniques. Participants may discuss any one of the theme or combination of themes as listed above, focusing on their own course/discipline. About the Host Institution (Banaras Hindu University) Banaras Hindu University is a leading residential & internationally reputed temple of learning situated at half a mile away from the bank of Ganga in the holy city of Varanasi- the sacred city Known for spirituality. The University was founded by the great nationalist and visionary leader, Mahamana Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya, in The university is spread over 4,000 acres in two campuses i.e. the main campus being in Varanasi and the second campus being developed at Rajiv Gandhi South Campus, Barakachha, Mirzapur. There are 4 institutes, 17 faculties, more than 140 teaching departments, 4 advanced centers and 4 interdisciplinary schools, 1 undergraduate college for women and more than 80 hostels with more than 30,000 students, about teachers and nearly 5,000 non-teaching staffs. About Faculty of Arts The Faculty of Arts is the oldest and largest faculty and occupies a unique position in the history of Banaras Hindu University. Earlier it was known as the Central Hindu College. It was founded
in 1898 by Dr. (Mrs.) Annie Besant and became the nucleus from which the Banaras Hindu University grew after its establishment in 1916 by Mahamana Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya. It is also popularly recognized as the "Mother Faculty" out of which many other faculties and departments of the university grew out. Realizing the significance and important role of humanities in modern education as well as in the nation building efforts, Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya envisaged it as a centre to preserve and disseminate the best thought and culture of India. As such through its various departments, the Faculty represents the cultural diversity and pluralism which form the salient features of the Indian cultural heritage and tradition. Since its inception, it has pursued with great devotion teaching and research in the field of humanities earning a distinction for itself and for Banaras Hindu University. Its excellent tradition has continued uninterruptedly. Currently the Faculty's focus lies in three broad areas of studies, namely, (i)history, Culture and Philosophy, (ii) Language and Literature; and (iii) Professional and Vocational courses. The first area is represented by the departments of Ancient Indian History, Culture & Archaeology, History of Art, and Philosophy & Indian Religion. These have since long been recognized as national centers for research and scholarship in their respective fields with a distinguished faculty of international repute. Under the second area of studies comes a large number of Indian and foreign language departments, that did distinctive contributions in research such as Hindi, Sanskrit and English. Not lagging far behind are such departments as Pali and Buddhist Studies, Bengali, Urdu, Telugu, etc, which are carrying out important research works besides teaching. Realizing the significance of foreign languages, departments of both Asian and European languages were established long back which impart training in more than 11 languages at various levels under the departments of Foreign Languages, French Studies, German Studies, Arabic and Persian. Known for their excellent academic output, these language departments have created a niche for themselves far and wide. This places Banaras Hindu University among the select few in India with excellent facilities for teaching and research in a large number of languages catering to the needs of national integrity and globalization. The dynamism of the Faculty is revealed in its ability to keep itself growing with the times by opening new departments suited to the contemporary needs of society. This forms the
part of its third area of focus which includes the professional courses like Physical Education, Library and Information Science, and Journalism and Mass Communication, and the most recently developed Vocational Courses like Office Management & Corporate Secretaryship, Office Management & Business Communication. Tourism & Travel Management, Archaeology and Museology, Functional Hindi and Functional English. It would be no exaggeration to say that the Faculty of Arts has continued to play a crucial role in building up the unique position of the Banaras Hindu University in India and abroad. This is well reflected in the brief indicative list of its luminous alumni and faculty that includes the former President of India Prof. S. Radhakrishnan, (Philosophy) as well as Padma awardees like B.L.Athreya and T.R.V.Murthy (Philosophy), Hazari Prasad Dwivedi (Hindi), Baldeva Upadhyaya (Sanskrit), Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan (History of Art), A.K.Banerji (Journalism and Mass Communication), S.R.Ranganathan and P.N.
