Launch your career, get a head start on being the next PIONEER!!! Summer research opportunities are available for rising 10 th & 11 th graders at Hampton University. These opportunities are funded through the HBCU-UP ACE NanoHU Research Program Outreach Program, both funded by the National Science Foundation. Students will conduct research in Interdisciplinary Nanoscience. To apply, submit: 1. Completed application form 2. One page personal statement that discusses your career aspirations, and your reasons for wanting to pursue a career in science, engineering or technology 3. One page nanoscience essay 4. Three letters of recommendations: (1) one from School Counselor (2) one from a science teacher, and (3) one from a science or math teacher 5. Current academic transcript (3.0 GPA Minimum) *Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents enrolled in a high school in the Hampton Roads area. This is a non-residential program. 3 Program Description The School of Science at Hampton University is pleased to provide summer research opportunities for high school students in the Hampton Roads area. The Nanoscience Transforming STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Education at Hampton University (NanoHU) Program (funded by the National Science Foundation, or NSF), support a six-week (Mon-Fri) non-residential, researchintensive program where students are actively engaged projects in Interdisciplinary Nanoscience (NanoHU). The program aims to introduce participants to the practice of STEM-related, academic research in higher education. In so doing, active participants will learn about (1) emerging topics in science and technology that have global implications, and (2) the steps necessary to successfully contribute as professionals in the same. Students will conduct research under the supervision of a faculty research mentors, and go on field trips to local government laboratories (e.g. Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, NASA Langley, etc.). The summer program will culminate with a mandatory poster session where students will present the results of their summer research projects. Student participants may opt to continue their research throughout the subsequent academic year and are strongly encouraged to present their research results during the annual School of Science Research Day Symposium at Hampton University, which occurs during the spring semester. Components of Program include: Scientific research project with a faculty mentor Field trips to local government laboratories Guest speakers at seminars On-campus experiences Academic enrichment activity NanoHU Pioneers Program Benefits The program is fully funded by National Science Foundation with NO COST to the students Participants will receive a stipend of $1000 total ($ every two-weeks) over the six-week period and upon successful completion of the program Research programs, workshops, field trips, lunch, and all activities are provided at NO COST to all program participants Knowledge of nanoscience, nanotechnology, interdisciplinary science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) related careers Exposure to campus life and the history of Hampton University How to study workshops, aiming to improve student s academic record Opportunity to present research results Certificate of Completion awarded upon successful completion of the program Applicants must meet the following requirements Be a rising 10 th or 11 th grader at the end of the current academic school year Have a grade point average of greater than 3.0 Have successfully completed at least one course of high school algebra Have a strong interests in STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Be committed to complete a six-week non-residential program on the campus of Hampton University Admission to the program is competitive and based on academic record, personal statement essay, and recommendations
