3 ENDOWMENT FUNDS AND ESTATE GIFTS Goal: $110 million ince the founding of Concordia Seminary in 1839, alumni, friends and congregations have provided a means to ensure the mission of the Seminary. Endowment funds provide perpetual funding that will sustain our historic excellence, and the significance of estate gifts for endowment is key. Concordia Seminary s vision is to be a world leader in Lutheran formation and scholarship. In our quest to achieve this vision, the endowment of Concordia Seminary will be strengthened through additional gifts, wise investment policies and the careful stewardship of earnings. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we are funding operations including generous amounts of student aid through current giving and endowment income, with the intent to grow total endowment from approximately $100 million at present to more than $200 million by Over the life of the Generations Campaign, we will seek to secure $110 million in additional endowment and estate gifts to contribute to that goal. Increasing the size of Concordia Seminary s endowment will provide blessings not just for this generation, but also for generations to come. Each gift is a promise to hand the flame of Christ s Gospel on to succeeding generations. Special gifts and bequests are blessings that will sustain the mission of the Seminary to prepare pastors and leaders who effectively proclaim Christ s salvation beyond today. Left: The fountain plaza in front of Concordia Seminary s library is a popular gathering place for students, faculty and visitors. Lutheran Church Missouri Synod President Dr. Matthew C. Harrison, center, looks on as seminarians review their call documents with friends and family. WHY GIVE TO AN ENDOWMENT? We recognize and appreciate that donors give for a variety of reasons. Those who choose to establish or add to an endowment will experience the joy of making a gift that will have enduring benefit as they support the Generations Campaign. Endowment funds are created for the purpose of generating perpetual earnings and ongoing, increasing worth. The original gift to the corpus the total of the original gift amount will never be spent. Gifts deposited in the endowment will be treated as permanently restricted funds. Only the earnings will be eligible for distribution at a rate determined by the Seminary s Board of Regents. Leave a Legacy A named endowment affords an opportunity to perpetuate stewardship intentions for an individual or family for generations to come. It provides sustaining support for programs that share and promote the same values. Endowments at Concordia Seminary are established because donors wish to share the life-giving Gospel of Jesus Christ with the Church and the world. Honor or Remember a Loved One For individuals or organizations that have played a significant role in the life of the donor, a named endowment can be a beautiful tribute with lasting impact. Honor or Remember a Pastor Through a named endowment, the humble shepherd who has guided a donor s spiritual growth can be recognized and remembered forever, even after being called to glory. 1

4 HOW TO GIVE TO AN ENDOWMENT Existing Endowments During the Generations Campaign, gifts of any size may be made to the Seminary s existing funds. For example, the Helping Hands Operational Endowment will provide revenue each year for the areas of greatest need at the Seminary. The Student Financial Aid Endowment Fund will support scholarships for seminarians and their families in residence. New Endowments Donors may work with the Seminary s gift officers to create specially named, new endowment funds. A named fund may be initiated with a commitment to give $25,000 or more to the Seminary, through either a multiyear intention of that same minimum or a bequest. Income Use Options Operational Support To assist with any purpose or area of greatest need as determined by the Seminary s Board of Regents. Student Scholarship For tuition assistance. Faculty Chair To ensure a permanent faculty position and a specific area of study. Student Caleb Cox takes a quick break from his ushering duties to look through the commencement program. When you choose to give to an existing endowment or decide to establish a new endowment with Concordia Seminary, you may indicate your intent by contacting a Seminary gift officer at Your adviser will work directly with you in order to fully accomplish your purpose and goals. This will include defining the investment period and the type of endowment. Your adviser will then draft an endowment agreement that best fits your intentions for your review and approval. Upon consensus, the formal endowment agreement will be signed by the Seminary s president and by you. I started the Helping Hands Operational Endowment to enable people to give endowed gifts at any level. This operational endowment allows funds to be used where most needed, to support the immediate needs of the Seminary. Anyone can contribute to this fund at any time, in any amount. 5 SEMINARY REVENUE Trends in supporting Concordia Seminary operations and student aid have changed, and it has become necessary to focus on the Seminary endowment. In 1970, the majority of our revenue came through a Synod subsidy. Today, that subsidy amounts to 1 percent of our revenue. Over time, to fill that void, the Seminary has become heavily reliant upon annual gifts. This model is unsustainable. Advisers to academic institutions recommend the diversification of revenue sources. The Generations Campaign is intended to grow the endowment from approximately $100 million at present, to more than $200 million by This will allow for a new flow of revenue to offset predicted decreases in traditional giving. Also, growing the Seminary s endowment presents the greatest opportunity for helping to sustain and expand our God-given mission. With your help, the Seminary will remain a leader in academic excellence and sustain our mission of pastoral formation for generations to come. Endowment Revenue Direct Gifts & Grants Service Fees & Other Revenues Net Tuition & Fees Synod Subsidy Revenue % 11% 26% 18% 44% Revenue % 56% 8% 20% 1% Revenue Goal % 37% 10% 20% 1% Historically, Concordia Seminary received its primary revenue directly from the unrestricted budget of The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS). Direct funding from the LCMS has gradually declined. Loyal donors, largely born in the 1920s and 1930s, have risen to meet the challenge. With the help of the Generations Campaign, revenue from endowment gifts and bequests will balance the Seminary s revenue sources and enhance financial stability. HOW CONCORDIA SEMINARY S ENDOWMENT IS INVESTED We partner with the LCMS Foundation to oversee the investment and management of the Seminary s combined endowment. The goal of the endowment is to generate regular, predictable and sustainable revenues while protecting and growing the corpus. The Seminary selects an asset allocation of equity and fixed income investments commensurate with its risk tolerance and return goals. This asset allocation is reviewed on a regular basis to ensure that it reflects the current investment market conditions. The LCMS Foundation invests the corpus using a long-term, balanced, conservative approach through a number of professional investment managers selected by its Board of Trustees and monitored by Wilshire Associates, one of the premier investment advisers in the United States. Seminary wife Ashley Bayless, left, deaconess intern Stephanie Jones and Vicar Kyle Jones are all smiles following the vicarage and deaconess internship assignment service. 3

6 MAKING PROVISIONS FOR THE SEMINARY IN AN ESTATE PLAN Some donors desire to create a legacy by planning for a gift to the Seminary in their estates. Such generosity expresses Christian stewardship principles by acknowledging that all gifts come from God, and that one of our final acts on earth is to prepare the next steward. Estate gifts to the Seminary contribute greatly to our mission and vision. Among the tools employed for estate giving are: Simple bequests Naming the Seminary as a beneficiary of an insurance policy or retirement account Estate Giving Options Gifts Through a Simple Will or Trust Name Concordia Seminary as a beneficiary of your will or trust. Contact a Seminary gift officer at for appropriate estate plan language. CONCORDIA SEMINARY LEGACY SOCIETY Membership in the Concordia Seminary Legacy Society is offered to those who inform us they have included a planned or deferred gift to the Seminary in their estate plans. The purpose of the Concordia Seminary Legacy Society is to recognize those who are thinking beyond their lives and themselves to support the mission of preparing the church s future pastors, missionaries, deaconesses and leaders. As a member of the Concordia Seminary Legacy Society, you will be proclaiming your love for the Savior now and when you and I are gathered around the Throne of Grace in heaven. Dr. Dale A. Meyer, President Concordia Seminary, St. Louis Beneficiary of a Life Insurance Policy Designate Concordia Seminary as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy. Beneficiary of a Retirement Plan Designate Concordia Seminary as a beneficiary of an IRA, 401k or another qualified retirement plan. Life Insurance Policy Transfer Make an ownership transfer of a life insurance policy to Concordia Seminary. Charitable Gift Annuities, Charitable Trusts or Other Options Contact a Seminary gift officer and consult your financial adviser regarding various tax benefits available from other deferred gift options.
