1 SIXTH FORM NEWS Week 1 12th September 2016 Message from the Head of Sixth Form Welcome to our new students and welcome back to our existing students we have such great things to celebrate and are extremely proud of your successes this summer. It is very exciting that most of our Year 13 students are progressing onto their first or second choice Universities and others are following different and exciting pathways into their futures; good luck to all of you! It was fantastic to meet all of our new Year 12 students on induction day last week. Congratulations to all of you for getting stuck into the carousel of activities with enthusiasm and fresh ideas. The term is progressing quickly already and the Newsletter is bursting with opportunities coming your way. I hope that you enjoy you first week of lessons. Mrs. Conway-Hughes Dates for your diaries Calling all aspiring Midwives Portsmouth University Social Work Admissions Conference being held this year on Wednesday, 5th October, 1-5pm. The event is designed for those planning to apply for Social Work this academic year for 2017 entry. It will provide taster lectures, an opportunity to chat with social workers, current social work students and service users. There will also be a Student Finance update and a talk with top tips from the Admissions team. The afternoon will be an invaluable source of information to help students put together a winning application for university. Please see Miss Williams asap if you would like to attend. Year 13 Medical Students An exiting opportunity to attend an all day event for on the 17 th September at Southampton General Hospital. The session will focus on reviewing personal statements with the opportunity to get involved in group discussions on current medical issues. Please register your interest with Dr Foreman asap! A special community A warm welcome back and greetings to all those joining the Sixth Form from elsewhere! Sixth Form promises so much: a new determination to succeed; a new attitude to study; a new sense of hope and excitement as we embark on the courses we ve chosen. But Sixth Form is also a special community so we must all give time to developing new friendships and making our own unique contribution! James does a huge amount in his technical supporting at the College and shows great commitment to his future career in this respect. Well done. Year 7 Mentors A GREAT BIG THANKS to the 21 Year 13 students who came in to College to support Year 7 students on Wednesday, 6th September. 4 Philosophy at Carisbrooke CE Primary School Mr. Torrington was joined by four Christ the King College Philosophy Year 13 students during his recent visit to Carisbrooke CE Primary. Hannah Nicholson-Noctor, Emily Slatter, Lici Wills and Evan Wragg helped Mr. Torrington introduce Year 3 children to philosophical enquiry. Carisbrooke s students were perfectly behaved and had an enjoyable, thought-provoking hour as Mr. Torrington told them stories, asked them tricky questions and played games. Our students went around asking pairs and threes to explain what they thought about questions ranging from moral responsibility to the nature of human existence. A wonderful time was had by all, and we can t wait to repeat the experience again one day. Online Mentoring Programme 09:00-09:25 Monday the 19th September find out about having an industry professional as an online mentor. There are places available per school or College. This is a very exciting opportunity for you to access additional support and guidance. Any students interested in teaching or working with children or young people should speak to Mr. Torrington about the potential of future outreach projects to Island schools and getting first-hand classroom experience.
