1 Program Description: High School Summer Youth Program The Raising Agriculturally and Technologically Literate Rattlers (RATLR) High School Summer Youth Program,, is a new and innovative youth development program designed to identify and prepare students for the next generation of scientists, business men and women, entrepreneurs, professors, etc. This program is intended to motivate students who possess the desire and capability to reach the highest level of educational pursuits while fulfilling a life, like Dr. Carver, committed to the service of a global population. The RATLR Program will also stimulate high school students interests in the biological and earth sciences, with emphasis in agricultural and food sciences, natural resource management, and related disciplines. Eligible students will be provided an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in these disciplines and receive first-hand knowledge of rewarding career paths. Although geared toward recruiting minority students, the program is not restricted to minorities, but rather, seeks students of all ethnic and national origins that fit the ideals that Dr. Carver set forth as the benchmark of academic and humanitarian excellence. The program is a 4-week, campus-based program which begins on Sunday, June 9, 2013 and ends on Wednesday, July 3, Completed applications for the RATLR High School Summer Youth Program must be postmarked no later than April 15, Eligibility: Current high school junior and senior students must have completed their junior or senior year by June 10th of the year of their application and participation. Students must also possess a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0, or higher, on a 4.0 scale in a college preparatory track. An official transcript must be submitted to verify all course work. Prior knowledge of, or participation in agriculture, food or related sciences is not required for admission. Selected RATLR participants, who choose Florida A&M University (FAMU) as their higher education venue, will be designated as Carver Scholars and will become a part of the National Carver Scholars Program. These scholars will be tracked and assisted for the duration of their undergraduate college matriculation through their attainment of the doctorate degree, and possibly, a post doctorate appointment. The Carver Scholars will also be given the opportunity to be exposed to, and work in top-notch scientific laboratories at other linkage universities, federal and state agencies, and private industries. Through this initial RATLR Program, students will have the opportunity to excel to their maximum level of academic achievement and experiential learning. This is a competitive program and admission is not guaranteed, but the rewards are immense and lifelong. Housing Accommodations: All students selected for the program will be housed in dormitories on the main campus of Florida A&M University (FAMU) in Tallahassee, Florida. Students will share rooms with fellow program participants during the four week period of the program. Mature male and female counselors will be employed to supervise students 24 hours a day throughout the duration of the program. 1

2 Fees: All program expenses, including food, housing, laboratory and field supplies, field trips and experiential learning materials will be paid for by the program. If you are selected, a $ application fee is required and must be sent to the address noted on Page 6 of this application, and must be received on or by Monday, May 27, This fee will defray the expenses incurred for recreational and other activities on and off campus. All parents or guardians of applicants are responsible for transportation costs to and from the FAMU campus. Notification: A maximum of 30 students will be selected for the program. The application deadline is April 15, All selected participants will be notified by May 17, All students selected are required to participate in the full program for the entire program session. Participation in other summer programs will not be permitted during the time of this summer program. Likewise, participants will not be permitted to leave the program for any reason except family emergency or illness, which will require a written notice, with return receipt, or a call from a parent or guardian. Confirmation of Attendance: All selected participants must confirm their intent to participate in the RATLR Summer Program no later than the close of business, Monday May 27, Failure to confirm and submit $ fee to be received by the deadline date (05/27/13) will result in the loss of your slot. Payment can be made online Program Highlights: RATLR Summer Program Participants will: Be exposed to all academic programs, extension (outreach) programs, and scientific research being conducted within the College of Agriculture and Food Sciences through field trips; presentations from faculty, state and federal agents, and private industry representatives; a visit to the Land Pavilion at the Disney Epcot Center; and, selected movies highlighting Dr. George Washington Carver and other scientific explorers Receive hands-on experiential training and exposure through laboratory, field and on farm visitation Be required to conduct a research or extension mini-project and present findings at the end of the program. Be exposed to a broad array of scientific disciplines that will entice them to reach their highest levels of academic achievement, such as the masters and doctorate degree, which will enable them to help solve the unfinished miracles in the biological and earth sciences globally. 2
