1 Detailed Information OBAP PENSACOLA ACE ACADEMY About OBAP ACE Academy The Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals Summer ACE Academy is a nationally recognized program co-sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Black Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees (NBCFAE). The purpose of Aviation Career Education (ACE) is to offer first level exposure to the aviation industry by providing aviation career exploration for middle and high school students. Academy participants learn about aviation history, theory of flight, and other aviation related subjects. Students will have the opportunity to go on field trips to aviation facilities, museums and participate in other hands on activities designed to give students a total aviation experience. Overview The ACE program is designed to expose youths to the wide variety of career opportunities in aviation. The goal is to provide an opportunity for students to receive hands on experience of learning the history of aviation, fundamentals of aerodynamics, the role of government in aviation, and the many careers available in the aviation industry. Students will meet Aviation Professionals and participate in field trips to a variety of aviation facilities and educational institutions. Activities As a member of an ACE Academy you will: Take an orientation flight in a Cessna or Piper aircraft Receive basic aviation education Take field trips to different aviation related facilities Be introduced to aviation history Fly a full-motion flight simulator Learn the qualities of leadership Associate and work with other youth Meet professionals from the aviation community Operate unmanned aerial systems and remote control vehicles Admission Requirements Admission is offered to boys and girls from 14 to 18 years old who have an interest in learning about aviation. Applicants are competitively ranked based on age, cumulative GPA, and essay. Students must be physically capable of participating in all activities. High standards of behavior and self-discipline are expected and students must abide by all academy regulations. Parents or guardians must attend an orientation before programs begin. Application Process There is a $50.00 non-refundable application-processing fee for ALL APPLICANTS to cover administrative costs. Additional fees are specific to the academy and are noted.

2 The application deadline is May 30, The requirements are: 1. Submit a $50.00 non-refundable application fee. Payable online during the application process. a. If you require sending payment by Check or Money Order, you must contact the national office at Make all check/money orders payable to: OBAP - ACE Academy 2. Submit a completed online ACE Academy application. Once completed be sure to PRINT and bring to the first day or orientation of the academy. 3. Complete the online essay. a. Write and submit an essay of one page (only one page) expressing your interest in aviation. You may include your hobbies, civic involvement, and extra-curricular activities b. We recommend you give some thought to your essay as it is reviewed by your director. c. You may also consider typing it in MS Word or another text editor and cut and paste the content into the essay text block. Note you are only allowed a certain amount of space. 4. Submit a copy of your most recent official school transcript or report card indicating your cumulative GPA Incomplete packages will not be considered for admission and all documents will be discarded. Academy Cost: Vary. However, there is an application-processing fee: $20.00 for all students (unless approved by the national office) Students will need money only if they intend to purchase personal items and are responsible for keeping their own funds. Please bring your own chairs, umbrellas and beverages. If you have EZ tents and can bring one or more of them to share that will be very helpful to everyone because the weather will be very HOT and there is very little natural shade. The Ferguson Airport has restroom facilities, water fountain and soda machine however their lounge is very small and they will be conducting business on that day. We will not be able to congregate in the lounge area because there is not enough space to accommodate everyone and this would interfere with their business so thank you in advance for your cooperation on graduation day. The Fly Day and graduation should take about 3 hours to complete so please come prepared.

4 Daily Schedule important information The parent drop off and pick up will be at the Greater Little Rock Baptist Church extension center located across the street from the main church on the corner of A and Strong Street. Please refer to the above schedule for the times for each day. Lunch will be provided each day of the academy for all students and staff. Any additional snacks may be brought or purchased on your own. The parent meeting on Monday June 9 is required for your child to participate. At that time you will be required to turn in the General release and emergency medical information forms. If you will not be able to make the meeting please notify Cliff Curtis (Director) as soon as possible. All students must attend everyday of the Academy in order to graduate and qualify for the orientation flight on Saturday June 20 th. If for some reason you are unable to attend the Academy please notify Cliff Curtis (Director) immediately at (703) If you miss 2 days of the Academy you will automatically be disqualified from further participation. There will be no exceptions to this rule. Students are required to dress appropriately each day. IPods and other gaming devices will only be allowed on the vans while being transported. They will not be allowed in class or during field trips. Cell phones will be allowed for communication with parents or guardians when required. All other communication including texting will not be tolerated in class and on field trips Every student who completes the week will qualify for graduation and the orientation flight. Please note that the orientation flight is strictly voluntary and will not keep you from graduating if you decide not to fly. Parents and invited guests are encouraged to bring cameras and video equipment to capture your child s graduation and flight. Our goal is to make this an enjoyable experience for every student. This will be a fun week filled with exciting learning opportunities. All of our requirements and rules will be strictly enforced. We reserve the right to dismiss any student we feel is a distraction to the rest of the group. Because of the orientation flight and the inherent danger of being around real airplanes with moving parts and propellers our staff will be diligent in our assessment of your child s behavior during the week. SAFETY IS OUR PRIMARY CONCERN AND RESPONSIBILITY, and each staff member is an experienced professional pilot and we will not tolerate any compromise to this important safety standard.
