2 Come to Nicaragua to receive evidence-based training and gain hands-on experience in community-based, public health methodologies through a three-week Practicum course, and an optional five-week Internship. Program Overview Each summer, AMOS Health & Hope, a non-profit with 50 years of collective experience implementing successful public health programs in Nicaragua, offers highly-motivated students the chance to participate in a Practicum that aims to empower a socially conscious generation of public health workers. Fostering a critical analysis of international health development and social theories of power and privilege, the Practicum examines current models and methodologies for improving health in low-resource settings and combines the best of classroom and hands-on experience to take students knowledge of public health and community empowerment to the next level. Option 1: Practicum 120-hour course and fieldwork June 11 July 1, 2017 Option 2: Urban Capstone 240-hour course and fieldwork June 11 July 22, 2017 Option 3: Practicum + Internship 320-hour course, plus 200 hours of fieldwork June 11 August 5, 2017 Practicum Course Overview The Practicum s syllabus includes: Nicaraguan Cultural-Historical Orientation Analysis of Current Models for Global Rural Health Care (CBPR, CHWs, Upstream approaches, etc.) Development of public health skills (survey administration workshops, educational material validation, monitoring and evaluation, curriculum development, etc.) Exposure to fieldwork and rural health care settings Child and Maternal Health Interventions Critical Self-Reflection In the first week, students learn about key theoretical global health concepts that include horizontal public health interventions, community based participatory action research (CBPR),

3 the community health worker (CHW) model and community empowerment. In the following week, participants apply their knowledge in the field at one of our 22 rural sites. In the final week, students receive training in AMOS monitoring and evaluation strategy and research priorities. Through our unique course model, students gain an understanding of how community empowerment can improve health outcomes in rural and urban Nicaragua. Optional 3-5 Week Capstone/Internship Students have the opportunity to extend their time with AMOS as an intern for three to five additional weeks after the practicum (all interns must attend the Practicum). Through the capstone/internship, students will have the chance to: Spend additional time collaborating with AMOS Primary Health Care team to support long-term research initiatives. Focus their fieldwork project in specific project areas, such as: Women s Empowerment, Youth Empowerment, Nutrition, and Urban Health Care. Work with other interns to present their project findings in both technical and nontechnical formats for different audiences. Internship projects focus on key epidemiological research initiatives that contribute to long-term programmatic goals. Interns work closely with staff in the field to enhance AMOS programs that improve the health of impoverished communities by working alongside them in health, education and development. How Practicum, Capstone, & Internships Help You Reach Your Goals 1. Learn from the challenges and successes of an experienced team of facilitators who currently implement public health interventions in remote, low-resource settings. 2. Learn first-hand the importance of putting people at the center of your learning. The communities AMOS works with will be your teachers as much as (if not more than) the AMOS team of facilitators. The practicum will emphasize the how and why behind Community-Based Primary Health Care as an effective model for improving health and making a difference in people s lives. 3. Log more than 120-hours of public health work during the practicum and an additional 200 hours during the internship that can help fulfill the requirements of a Public Health practicum.

4 Eligibility Practicum The practicum course is open to graduate/medical students upper level undergraduates, and recent graduates interested in gaining global public health fieldwork experience in a rural Nicaraguan context. The practicum course is taught in English with AMOS translators accompanying you in-field; no Spanish is required. Internship For those who wish to apply for our internship program, we require at least two years of college Spanish and professional working proficiency, or S3 level. S3 proficiency is described as: Can discuss particular interests and special fields of competence with reasonable ease Has comprehension which is quite complete for a normal rate of speech Has a general vocabulary which is broad enough that he or she rarely has to grope for a word Program Costs Breakdown Practicum (3 wks) Practicum + Urban Capstone (6 wks) Practicum + Internship (8 wks) Food, Lodging, In country Transportation $682 $1364 $2047 Project Costs $1718 $2536 $2853 Total $2,400 $3900 $4900 Total fees include all pre-trip planning and logistics, airport pick up and drop off, printed course materials, fieldwork supplies, food, lodging and transportation in rural communities. Airfare is not included in this cost. The majority of students have received funding from their institutions or through donations.
