2 Admission to Year 13 of St Patrick s Grammar School Information for Students and Parents After GCSE you will move beyond the compulsory school-age of 16, and therefore entry to the Sixth Form of St Patrick s Grammar will be by invitation, issued after the publication of the GCSE results in August. The study of three or four AS subjects in Year 13 and three or four A2s in Year 14 is challenging and demanding for all students. The transition from GCSE to A Levels requires an increase in both intellectual ability and commitment to study which will stretch even the most able student. Joining the Sixth Form is initially a one year offer for all students and progression to Year 14 is at the discretion of the Board of Governors based on academic progress, a positive disposition to learning, high levels of attendance and overall commitment to the school. Based on GCSE profile, and after consultation with Careers staff, students will be guided as to their suitability for the study of three or four AS-levels in Year 13. Students are expected to abide by the School Rules as formulated by the Board of Governors and determined by those in charge of discipline. St Patrick s Grammar School reserves the right to enter students for AS and A2 examinations. Students must be prepared to accept timetable and curriculum arrangements, subject to class limits and availability of resources. This entails being involved and present at Religious Studies classes, Careers Education classes, recreational PE classes, tutorial periods, assemblies, school retreats and the celebration of the Eucharist. For those students who are registered as members of other denominations alternative arrangements can be organised. Admissions Criteria To be considered eligible to enter our Sixth Form applicants must have at least: (i) 12 points based on at least 5 A*-C at GCSE (Grade A*-C at the time of publication of results in August) a. A* = 4 Points b. A = 3 Points c. B = 2 Points d. C = 1 Point (ii) a Grade B at Higher Level GCSE to continue studying a subject at AS level. (iii) a Grade B in English Language and/or before any new subject can be taken. Any student who has not achieved a pass grade in either Maths or English will be required to re-sit at the earliest convenient opportunity. Enrolment Criteria: Should the number of applicants mean that school s enrolment number would be exceeded if they were all admitted to the Sixth Form then applicants will be selected using the following criteria: 1 Firstly, those students who were students of St Patrick s Grammar in Year 12 and who meet the admissions criteria 2. Secondly, in rank GCSE score order, those students from St. Colmcille s High School and St. Columba s High School who have completed an application form by the date of formal application and who meet the admissions criteria. 3. Thirdly, in rank GCSE score order, those students from other post-primary schools who have completed an application form by the date of formal application and who meet the admissions criteria, until the school s allowed total for Year 13 is reached.

3 Attendance Criterion: A minimum of 95% attendance in Year 12 is required. Behaviour Criterion for Year 13 Students must have displayed positive behaviour in Year 12 by demonstrating a lack of detentions and/or suspensions from school for serious or recurring offences against the rules of your current school. Positive Attitude To successfully complete a course of study in the Sixth Form, a positive and co-operative attitude towards study, discipline, attendance and the religious ethos of the school is essential. Prior to entry to the Sixth Form, students will be asked to sign, and parents countersign an agreement accepting the rules, standards and authority of the school as applied by the Principal. This agreement includes a commitment to attend school throughout the academic year and not to go on vacation during term time. The school does not support the taking of part-time jobs: A-level study is a full-time occupation and such jobs only result in long-term loss. Special Circumstances Students will be admitted to Year 13 strictly in accordance with the above criteria subject only to the consideration of medical issues which may have negatively affected performance in GCSE examinations and which are supported by documentary evidence of a medical or other appropriate nature. Special Circumstances must be submitted to the school as soon as possible after the issuing of examination results and no later than the 27 th August Please note that the awarding of Special Circumstances will be at the discretion of the Review Panel of the Board of Governors. Post GCSE Results Meeting: Following the publication of your results in August there will be a meeting held in the school at 11:30am on Thursday 22 nd August If you wish to be considered for a place in our Sixth Form you must attend this meeting with proof of your GCSE results, your Progress File and your Year 12 report(s) (including attendance records).

Applicants will be ranked in order of GCSE performance both in the subject and overall. As well as studying 3 or 4 AS-levels, all students will follow an enrichment programme which includes Personal Development, Careers, Community Outreach and Religious Education.
