7 SAT/ACT Strategies 1. Take each test at least once, and repeat the one you did better on one or two more times. 2. Start spring of 11 th grade year, and take the test you did better on at least once in fall of 12 th grade 3. For admissions purposes, the last date to take the SAT or ACT is December of the 12 th grade year. Some schools, i.e. Cal Poly, Long Beach State and SDSU, prefer the testing to be complete by November of 12 th grade UC-approved course lists for California high schools are available online at

9 UC Admission Requirements All applicants who meet minimum requirements will receive a comprehensive review of their application. 11 of the 15 a-g courses by the end of 11th grade 3.0 minimum GPA (weighted, capped) ACT plus writing or the SAT plus writing 9

10 Tips for Students Presenting Themselves in the Application Carefully complete the application: Tell us everything they want us to know Major(s) of interest, if decided Family background Participation in activities Use transcript(s) don t guess about grades Avoid abbreviations/acronyms All of these tips provide context and clarity

11 Personal Statement Prompts Applicants are asked to respond to two prompts: Describe the world you come from for example, your family, community or school and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations. Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are? Word count: 1,000 words total no more 11

12 ELC Process and Outcomes UC letter encouraging top students from each participating high school to apply is sent in September Top 9 percent from participating high school GPA calculated after a student applies for admission Students know instantly if they qualify for ELC For ELC applicants: If not admitted to campus choice, they will be offered a spot at another campus. 12

17 Campus/Program Impaction Campuses fall into 3 categories: Admit using CSU eligibility Campus impaction (freshman/transfer) Impacted in all programs (all majors) Most campuses have at least one impacted major/program Typically impacted at upper-division level Students must meet criteria such as GPA in specific core/major prep courses, cumulative GPA, or a combination of factors

18 CSU Eligibility vs. Selection All students who meet CSU entrance requirements are eligible to apply for admission. Other campuses are not impacted for general admission, but are impacted for specific majors. Also, due to the budget situation, there might be more impacted campuses every year.

19 Eligibility vs. Selection All students who meet UC or CSU entrance requirements are eligible to apply for admission. From the pool of eligible applicants, campuses select the students they accept for admission. Non-impacted campuses accept all eligible students: Bakersfield Channel Islands Dominguez Hills East Bay Maritime Academy Monterey Bay Stanislaus UC Merced Northridge (Local Service Area Guarantee)

University of California Application website opens August 1st of the 12 th grade year Online applications can be submitted November 1st to 30th of 12 th grade Cost to apply - $70 per campus as of 2015 Where to apply? Cal State University Application website opens October 1 st Online applications can be submitted October 1 to November 30 th of the 12 th grade year Cost to apply - $55 per campus as of 2015 Where to apply?

21 Private Colleges & Universities Have varying requirements & application deadlines Most require counselor/teacher recommendations Contact the campus online for specific information or californiacolleges.edu

22 Letters of Recommendation Only Private Colleges accept letters of recommendation UC/CSU-UC may require letters of recommendation-csu does not Must be requested from the teacher or counselor A three week notification prior to the deadline for admission is appreciated Remember that your teacher/counselor does not write letters during winter break

23 Helpful Strategy; Apply to: A few schools that are a reach per your GPA and SAT scores The majority of your schools should have their average GPA and SAT of admitted students be in your range Apply to one or two back up schools, such as an un-impacted CSU or UC

24 Private Colleges - How to apply? Once the student opens a Common App account, invite your teachers and counselor through address. Only then can teachers and counselor submit and attach their letters of recommendation to the student application. If a college does not use Common App, you can apply directly on its website

29 All students can afford to attend college They must: Apply for college admission in November File a FAFSA and a Cal Grant GPA verification form by March 2 Provide documentation to the financial aid office as requested Expect to borrow and work part time

30 How to Apply for Financial Aid FAFSA: used to calculate eligibility for needbased financial aid and for federal student and parent loans GPA VERIFICATION FORM: collects GPA information for Cal Grant awards (completed by school) California schools only.

31 EAP in SPRING 2016 CAASPP testing-all Juniors will participate. In CAASPP, no extra EAP questions, no separate essay. Student reports to school by July 31 st. Report to parents by start of school Students will need to release results to CSU/Community College
