4 How to Read the CPS Illinois Employment Reports Based on the Illinois Department of Employment Security Data Through a partnership with the Illinois Department of Employment Security, the team has obtained Illinois employment records for 2007 CPS graduates. included in these reports Only graduates with valid SSN on Student Information System (SI) or IMPACT (about 88% of graduates) are included in the reports. In addition, students who indicated that they have enlisted for Military Services on the Senior Exit Questionnaire (SEQ) have been excluded from the analysis. of charter and alternative schools are included in all of the 3 reports: All (N=124) students: This report includes all students who graduated from CPS by fall of 2007 and had a valid SSN on SI or IMPACT. with disabilities: This report includes students who graduated from CPS by fall of 2007, had a valid SSN on SI or IMPACT and who have a disability code or 504 plan on SI or IMPACT. without disabilities: This report includes students who graduated from CPS by fall of 2007, had a valid SSN on SI or IMPACT and who do NOT have a disability code or 504 plan on SI or IMPACT. Groups of students reported Using the National Clearinghouse data (NSC) of college enrollment, students in the report were separated into 4 major groups and 2 subgroups. Employment information is reported on each of the following groups: All Enrolled in Illinois Colleges includes students who, according to NSC, were enrolled in an Illinois college as of November 1, Enrolled in Colleges in Other States includes students who, according to NSC, were enrolled in college in states other than Illinois as of November 1, Not Enrolled in College includes students who, according to NSC, were NOT enrolled in college as of November 1, who DID NOT pick Employment on SEQ or Missing SEQ Information includes students who are NOT enrolled in college and DID NOT pick Employment as their primary postsecondary plan on the SEQ. - who Picked Employment as a Primary Plan on SEQ includes students who are NOT enrolled in college and PICKED Employment as their primary postsecondary plan on SEQ. Demographic and academic groups Gender and race/ethnicity groups: We used the information from SI to place students into their respective gender and racial/ethnicity groups. GPA groups: We used a number of spring semester course files and matched the data to each graduate. A number of students in the missing GPA group are charter school students. Source: CPS semester course files. CTE program completers: Any graduate who has enrolled and passed all three course levels in the same program during grades 9 th through 12 th is in this category. 5 How to Read the CPS Illinois Employment Reports Based on the Illinois Department of Employment Security Data Statistics on the reports Oct. 1, 07 Jan. 1, 08 - For the purposes of comparability to national data, the employment rate in the fall after graduating from high school is calculated. This includes students employed at some point October 1, 2007 and January 1, Oct.1, 07 Oct. 1, 08 - All of the analysis is done on students who were employed within one year after graduating from high school (i.e. employed at some point October 1, 2007 and October 1, 2008). Four Continuous employed for four continuous quarters i.e. Q4 (Oct.-Dec.) of 2007 and Q1 (Jan.-Mar.), Q2 (Apr.-Jun.), Q3 (Jul.-Sept.) of 2008 are included in this statistic. Rather than average wages, median wages are reported. wages can be easily obscured by outliers in the data such as unusually high wages that are not representative of the sample, whereas median wages more accurately represent the sample. Also, this is in line with national data where median wages are reported. is a middle observation of the ordered data set (ex. 1, 3, 4, 7, 9 median=4, average=4.8).
