Fitch High School is to educate our students to become outstanding citizens equipped with 21st century learning skills. The faculty and staff collaborate with home and community to promote academic excellence, personal wellness, and social awareness. We guide students into deeper cognitive awareness and increased levels of understanding, and we encourage our students to use their individual talents to their fullest potential. Our graduates are informed, responsible adults who respect diversity and value life-long learning. MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Fitch Community: We are excited to announce that the Groton Board of Education gave its approval to Fitch High School to offer the Project Lead The Way (PLTW) science and engineering curriculum for the school year. This is truly exciting to the Fitch High School student body because PLTW is a nationally recognized program that helps introduce and prepare students to become leaders in engineering, manufacturing, and other STEM related fields. PLTW students apply science, technology, engineering, and math to solve real-world problems. Here are a few opportunities PLTW partners offer FHS students: 1. Students can become certified in leading 3-D Design Software programs from Autodesk. 2. Students can get involved in robotics competitions and other challenges covering CAD design, game design, and STEM education. 3. There are $1.5 million in scholarships available from the Robotics Education and Competition Foundation. 4. PLTW college/university affiliates annually recognize qualified college bound students. FHS thanks the Board of Education and Dr. Graner for allowing us the opportunity to offer a great program to FHS students. 4 School Counseling News December 2014 Financial Aid Night and Informational Session on the College Process to be held on December 11th On December 11th the School Counseling Department will be hosting a Financial Aid Night and Informational Session on the College Process at 6 pm in the FHS Auditorium. Financial Advisor, Mr. Craig Breitsprecher, will discuss how to pay for college and the financial aid process. After the financial aid portion of the presentation, school counselors will hold an informational session on the college process that will be geared towards junior parents. Career Clusters In the first few weeks of December the School Counseling Department will be going into Freshman Academic Seminar class to introduce and discuss Career Clusters. This program will begin with the Class of Career Clusters are new program at Fitch High School and will provide many benefits to our students. Career Clusters allow students to: Think big. Career Clusters help students take a broad look at their options through fifteen fields and the careers within each field. Get excited. Exploring clusters can get the student excited about their options as they discover what is available to them. Save time. Exploring groups of similar occupations helps students select and eliminate choices more quickly than researching many individual occupations. Take control. Base their career choice on their own dreams, interests and strengths. Spend wisely. Make informed decisions about their areas of study, reducing the chance of changing their major while in college Stand out. Grab employers' attention by knowing the skill requirements and knowledge for specific fields and jobs. Once students have chosen a Career Cluster they will have the opportunity to take at least 6 classes in their cluster. Upon successful completion of a minimum 6 classes in a cluster, your student will be honored senior year at the awards banquet with a certificate and a pin to wear on their graduation gown. Any students wishing to change Career Clusters at any time must meet with their School Counselor.

5 We encourage you to take this opportunity to talk to your student about the various Career Clusters, and what career they would be most interested in exploring. Please review FHS Career Cluster options below, and if you have any questions or concerns, please don t hesitate to contact your son/daughter s School Counselor. Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources the production, processing, marketing, distribution, financing and development of agricultural commodities and resources including food, fiber, wood products, natural resources, horticulture, and other plant and animal products/resources. Architecture & Construction designing, planning, managing, building, and maintaining the built environment. Individuals pursuing a career in the Architecture and construction cluster work on new structures, restorations, additions, alterations and repairs. Arts, A/V Technology & Communications offered two different avenues of concentration. Careers in the performing arts, visual arts or certain aspects of Journalism, broadcasting and film require courses and activities that challenge students creative talents, while careers in Audio- Video Communication Technology Telecommunications or Printing technology requires strong backgrounds in computer and electronic-based technology and a solid foundation in math and science. In addition the creative aspects of this cluster are rapidly merging with the technological, making it even more challenging. Business Management & Administration planning, organizing, directing and evaluating business functions essential to efficient and productive business operations. Career opportunities are available in every sector of the economy and require specific skills in organization, time management, customer service and communication. Education & Training Planning, managing, and providing education and traingin services, and related learning support services. Finance Planning, services for financial and investment planning, banking, insurance, and business financial management. Government & Public Administration Executing governmental functions to include Governance; National Security; Foreign Services; Planning; Revenue and Taxation; Regulation; and Management and Administration at the local, state, and federal levels.

6 Health Science promote health, wellness, and diagnosis as well as treat injuries and diseases. Some of the careers involve working directly with people, while others involve research into diseases or collecting and formatting data and information. Work locations are varied and may be in hospitals, medical or dental offices or laboratories, cruise ships, medevac units, sports arenas, space centers or within the community. Hospitality & Tourism managing, marketing and operations of restaurants and other food services, lodging, attractions, recreational events and travel-related services. Hospitality operations are located in communities throughout the world. Human Services Preparing individuals for employment in career pathways that relate to families and human needs Information Technology building linkages in IT occupations for entry level, technical, and professional careers related to the design, development, support, and management of hardware, software, multimedia and systems integration services. Law, Public Safety, Corrections & Security Planning, managing, and providing legal, public safety, protective services and homeland security, including professional and technical support services. Manufacturing Planning, managing, and performing the processing of materials into intermediate or final products and related professional and technical support activities such as production planning and control, maintenance and manufacturing/process engineering. Marketing Planning, managing and performing marketing activities to reach organizational objectives. Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics planning, managing, and providing scientific research and professional and technical services including laboratory and testing services, and research and development services

7 November Student of the Month Math Siasak Martin: Motivated and hard-working. Siasak (Sheshka) has only been in this country since July. She is a motivated math student who comes to class prepared and ready to learn. Social Studies: Greg Cooper, grade 11. Diversified Health Occupations: Quartney Parker (12 th grade). Quartney is a very hard working student who continuously shows qualities of academic integrity, personal responsibility, and citizenship. He is a smart, genuine young man with a strong sense of character and is an asset to my class! Mrs. Brennan World Languages: Ali Wilkinson Ali is involved in many school activities and is a full diploma candidate in the IB program. She maintains a cheerful outlook and a high level of motivation in realizing all class projects and daily assignments. (12 th grade) Science: Catherine Albo (Class of 2017 Sophomore) Catherine is currently involved in Key Club, Multicultural Club, Acapella Group, Photo Club. She is and has been a Varsity Cheerleader since Freshman year. She is an A student in both her science classes. She is a very nice young lady who treats all adults with respect. They don t make students like her often. Mr. Agsalud PE: Thomas Collazo Technology Education- Video Production: Thomas Collazo- a Junior in his first year here at Fitch High School has exhibited an enthusiastic attitude and effort when it comes to Video Taping school events. Thomas has volunteered to Video tape Soccer Games for the coaches to view as well as Our Pep Rally for the community to View on. Music: Joeanna Novak is dedicated and hardworking member of our String Orchestra. She has high standards, and calmly goes about striving to reach them each day. She is enrolled in the Honors section for orchestra. She performs in the Thames Valley Youth Orchestra and is well prepared for her Eastern Region Music Festival audition.
