How and when do I apply? 1. Check each institutions website for application deadlines. Many have November 1st Early application deadlines. Regular application deadlines will vary. It is always best to apply to the early deadline. (Early Action applications are non binding, Early Decision are binding. Priority deadlines mean you have a greater chance to get into the college if you apply by that deadline.) 2. Check the institutions website for the type of application you need to complete to apply. Some use Coalition Application, Common Application and others will prefer their institutional application.
Coalition Application, Common Application or institutional application? *The good news is that almost all of the Top 20 National Colleges and Universities accept either the Coalition Application or the Common Application! Only MIT and Georgetown University use institutional applications. *Many of these institutions will want you to complete the SSAR report in lieu of sending in hard copies of your transcript. Again, check the institutional website to make sure you don t miss a step. *Many colleges and universities offer an application checklist online that you can print. I suggest you print one out for every institution you are applying to. In some cases there are additional steps to in order to complete the application process in addition to completing the Coalition Application/Common Application.
College Entrance Exam testing: 1. Sign up to take the SAT and/or ACT as soon as you can. Know what the average scores are so that you have a goal in mind. 2. Sign up to take Subject tests as soon as possible. Many of the top institutions will require at least one or two Subject tests. Some are very specific on the ones they want you to take and others will let you choose. 3. Request official score reports as soon as possible. Score report requests can take 5-6 weeks to process. SAT- ACT- Official score reports cost around $12 each.
Avoid these big college application mistakes: 1. Spelling or grammatical errors- proofread everything. Have someone else read over your application, essays, resumes etc. 2. Neglecting to read the directions carefully. 3. Letting parents take the lead. Colleges don t know how interested you are in them if only your parent is in communication with them. It is time for you to take the lead. 4. Submitting a lengthy resume. Keep it to the point. Only submit a resume if the college asks for it or if there is an optional choice to upload a copy. Do complete the Activities section of the application if there is one. 5. Waiting until the last minute. It can take up to 4-5 weeks to make sure everything is complete on an application and that all documentation is in. Start early!
6. Do not repeat yourself. Each part of your application should tell something new about you. 7. When visiting colleges or during interviews, do not ask questions that are easily found. Doing so may give the impression that you haven t done your research. 8. Writing a one-size-fits-all essay. 9. Leaving off your extracurriculars. Colleges want to know where a student s passions lie and genuine interests tend not to appear suddenly in senior year. Quality over quantity. 10. Failing to check curriculum requirements. Make sure you have taken the required courses for the major or program you would like to study.
5 Things College Applicants can do to stand out- in a good way. ( 1. Develop a list of colleges you would like to attend and research information about the college from their website. Assess who you are and what you re good at and how that may fit in with the college s strengths. You should be able to come up with a list of five reasons for applying to every school on your list. 2. Consider early options. Early Action (non binding), Early Decision (binding) or Priority deadlines.
3. Show sincere interest. As it becomes easier for students to apply to multiple schools electronically and by using the Common Application, admissions officers are alert for "stealth candidates" who do nothing but fill out the forms. If you want to be taken seriously, "you've got to show them some love," says Caroline Brokaw Tucker, an independent college consultant at Connecticut-based Dunbar Educational Consultants. 4. Pay attention to details. Optional essays? Write them. A chance to elaborate on your extracurricular activities? Take it. For students on the bubble, that bit of extra effort can make the difference in whether or not you're admitted. 5. Take the lead. Throughout the process, it's really crucial to remember that you, not your parents, are running the show. Take charge of creating your list, of arranging visits and interviews (and then do the talking), and of reaching out to the admissions office with questions on your own, rather than having your mom do it on her lunch hour.
So what are my next steps? Check websites for application deadlines. Keep track of them. 2. Check Early Decision, Early Action, Priority and Financial Aid deadlines and mark them on a calendar. 3. Print a copy of the application checklist for each institution you will be applying to. 4. Begin working on any applications that are currently available. You will be looking for the Undergraduate Application for the Fall of Make contact with the people you would like to write letters of recommendations for you. Check to make sure the college/university needs for you to submit those. That should be listed on the application checklist. Give your recommenders a copy of your resume. That will help them write a letter that is more personalized.
6. Order official copies of your transcript from Ms. Mosholder in Student Services. A hard copy will cost you $2. If the institution you are applying to accepts electronic copies there is no cost however, the official request for the transcript must still be made in Student Services. 7. Start working on SSAR if the institution asks for your transcript that way versus a hard copy being mailed. (FSU and UF use the SSAR system it may be worth starting the process if you plan on applying to either of those institutions) 8. Create your FSA ID username and password. You will need to remember your username and password in order to submit your FAFSA application. You cannot start the FAFSA application until October 1st. It is recommend that both student and parent have their FSA ID username and password created prior to starting the FAFSA application.
9. Order official score reports from SAT/ACT. 10. Sign up for SAT/ACT or Subject tests. ( The school day SAT is October 10th. You do not need to register for this one. OCPS will automatically take care of your registration. )
