1 Student Council Packet Grade Levels and Officers All 4 th -8 th grade homerooms will have two representatives. 7 th and 8 th graders are eligible to serve on the Executive Board, which will consist of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. All positions will be voted upon and all candidates will give a speech (not to exceed 3 min). Executive Board will be voted on by every registered voter in grades 4-8, and Homeroom Representatives will be voted upon by their homeroom classmates. Any student who meets the qualifications and requirements can run and pick up an Election Packet from Miss Roos or print it. Academics & Behavior Student Council is an extra-curricular activity and will follow the guidelines in the handbook. A student may not fail any subjects or have a D on their report card. Students are responsible for their own behavior while respecting the rights of all Student Council members, special activity guests, and fellow students. Students will maintain good citizenship; representatives with discipline problems could result in dismissal from Student Council. Attendance The Executive Board will meet every other Tuesday during study hall. The entire Student Council will meet the 1 st Monday of each month after school. Representatives who miss more than 2 monthly Monday meetings per grading period may be subject to dismissal from the Student Council. Election Packet Packets must be complete and turned in by Thursday August 14 in order for students to be eligible for Student Council candidacy. The packet consists of permission slip, 2 letters of recommendation (Parents may not be used), and campaign speech. Campaigning Each candidate is permitted 1 poster (no bigger than 22 x28 ), which must be approved by Miss. Roos, to display in the middle school hallway from Wednesday August 13 th until Friday August 15 th. All candidates must take down their campaign posters by the end of the day on Friday August 15 th. No handouts, gifts, buttons, or candy to students are allowed!

2 Duties and Responsibilities of Student Council Positions President Represents and leads the student body Develops the agenda for student council meetings Leads student council meetings Has the final vote when there is a tie Vice President Represents the student body Responsible for the prayer for all student council meetings Assists in developing the agenda for student council meetings Serves in the absence of the president Heads important sub-committees Secretary Represents the student body Records attendance at student council meetings Keeps accurate minutes of meetings and sends them out in a timely manner Handles correspondence for the student council Types materials for the student council as needed Treasurer Represents the student body Handles all council funds Presents proposed budget of activities to the council Reports at student council meetings on money matters Homeroom Representatives Represents the homeroom class Attends student council meetings and reports back to their homeroom Reports class feedback to the student council

3 Student Council Election Packet Checklist o Student Council Permission Slip o 2 Letters of Recommendation (no parent can be used) o Written Campaign Speech (not to exceed 3 minutes) Important Dates Friday, August 8 th Pick-up packets from Miss Roos. Tuesday, August 12 Thursday, August 14 th, Wednesday, August 13 th 4 th and 5 th grade students will fill out voter registration cards during their library time. Election packets must be turned in to Miss. Roos by the end of the school day. Wednesday, August 13 th Posters and campaign materials may go up. Friday, August 15 th Campaign speeches (not to exceed 3 min) will be given after mass. Friday, August 15 th Elections are held in science class for middle school and homeroom for 4 th /5 th grade. All campaign materials must be removed by the end of the school day. Executive Officers will be announced on the morning announcements and all student council members will be announced on the afternoon announcements Tuesday August 19 th.
