It is now a major player in the UK higher education sector with more than 30,000 students, and its unique heritage, clear pedigree and sheer scale gives USW a fantastic opportunity to make a significant impact within the region, nationally and internationally building on numerous strengths of the two combining institutions. The new University seeks outstanding individuals to lead the schools. You will be required to provide academic leadership within the School, focussing on the development and delivery of academic activities and operational management of the School. The coming together of the University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales Newport heralds the start of something very special within UK and Welsh higher education. The new institution will be far more than the sum of its component parts and we will quickly become a major force both nationally and internationally of that I am convinced. 3 Appointment of Head of School The University of South Wales The University of South Wales is a major new player in the Higher Education market, one of the top ten campus universities in the UK by student number. With constituent institutions (the University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales Newport) having achieved national recognition for their work in student support and widening participation, the University now has 33,000 students across five campuses. Vision The University is committed to: - Accessible, distinctive and responsive education - Providing an excellent student experience - Economic development and job creation across South Wales - Cultural enrichment across Wales - Community-based education - Investment and concentration in Science, Technology, Engineering and maths (STEM) - Expansion of international education Within its Group structure are included the national conservatoire of Wales (the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama) and a major college of further education Merthyr Tydfil). The University of South Wales will be a powerhouse in applied research and renowned for its partnership with major employers under its Business Engagement Strategy. Current examples include British Airways and the National Health Service, strengthening its role as a leading university for careers that will be reflected in the employment rate of its graduates. The quest for international excellence is matched by the role the new University will play in its hinterland, with existing projects such a the Universities of the Valleys Institute a partnership between the 2 conjoining institutions long before formal merger pivotal in its plans. This project recently won the acclaimed Guardian HE Award for Widening Access. A bedrock of the access agenda is the approach to student support and again there are successes to be heralded with the University of Glamorgan winning the THE Award in 2012 within the Outstanding Student Support category. Innovative Learning and Teaching will be the foundations of the new University s academic success linking strongly with a research portfolio that punches significantly above its weight. An academic workload model will underpin this linked approach. The structure of the new University is largely determined at senior levels with The Executive Team, faculties and corporate areas now appointed to in the main this post will complete the occupancy of these senior roles as identified on the structure chart. It is important to us that the Deans are involved in the determination of structures within their faculties for roles envisaged at the next level as heads of school 3

5 Appointment of Head of School Senior post job description Post: Head of School Responsible to: Dean of Faculty Salary: Grade K ( 67,394-69,411) per annum Job Purpose The Head of School will provide academic leadership within the School, focussing on the development and delivery of academic activities and operational management of the School. Principal duties and responsibilities To be responsible for the implementation of the Faculty strategy and University Strategic Priorities as they impact on the School and input to the development of relevant strategies as required. To develop operational plans for the School in liaison with colleagues and staff that meet set targets and priorities. To actively ensure the effective performance management of staff through use of the University s performance appraisal process and academic workload model, and to identify relevant development and training for staff. To ensure that the academic curriculum offered by the School is regularly reviewed, current and innovative, and meets University priorities, including targets for graduate employment and careers. To monitor the recruitment and retention of programmes and student satisfaction levels within the School, identifying those that do not meet set viability levels and taking action as appropriate. To ensure that academic standards are met, including the quality of teaching, learning and assessment and that the standards are consistently applied across the School. To actively identify and support opportunities for research, income generation and consultancy services. To lead on specific cross-faculty functions and initiatives to be determined in conjunction with the Dean. To manage allocated resources, ensuring they are efficiently, equitably and effectively allocated and utilised. To support the Dean in the discharge of compliance issues such as Health and Safety, Data Protection and Freedom of Information. To contribute to the Faculty s commitment to the University s Equalities agenda, via Faculty and Corporate working groups. To foster excellent working relationships with senior members of other Faculties, Corporate Departments, external partners and stakeholders. To contribute to Faculty, Corporate and external Working Groups and to represent the School and the Faculty, both internally and externally. To undertake any additional or alternative duties as directed by the Dean of Faculty, commensurate with the role/grade. 5

7 Appointment of Head of School Faculty of Business and Society This faculty will be of significant size operating across 3 schools: Business School Humanities and Social Sciences Law, Accounting and Finance Appointments to the Head of School posts have been made to the latter two Schools. Heads of School will form part of the Faculty Senior Management Team. This faculty will initially operate out of three campuses based in Cardiff, Newport and Pontypridd with the formal base of the Faculty management hub at the City Centre Campus in Newport. Academic information Student numbers Academic staff (FTE) Breadth of portfolio - subject areas within this faculty include: Business and Management, Marketing, Supply Chain/Logistics, Law, Accounting and Finance, English, History, Criminology, Art and Welsh Language USW Business School Staff - 67 FTE/107 headcount (inc Hourly Paid/Visiting Lecturers) Students - 2,600 FTE (3350 headcount) The new Business School is an amalgamation of the 2 Schools which existed in the previous Institutions. The former Glamorgan Business School, based at the Treforest campus provides the base for around 40 core academic staff, whilst the former Newport Business School based at its City Campus, continues to be the base for around 25 core academic staff. In terms of subject areas the offering covers Business and Management, Leadership, Marketing, Supply Chain & Logistics, Enterprise and Tourism. The University recently launched a Financial and Professional Services programme out of its Cardiff base and the Business School will make a contribution to that offering. In terms of research the School will be making submissions within the Business and Management Studies categories of the REF, although the volume of research outputs in general, is an area that will demand some attention. A number of externally funded projects are in operation including ESCALATE and the substantial Women Adding Value to the Economy (WAVE) project. The University of Wales Newport had declared itself as an Entrepreneurial University placing a high level of importance on supporting local businesses and developing enterprise skills. The Business Accountability and Responsibility Centre is unique in its focus on bringing together academics and members of the business community to debate topical issues. A Business and Management Group promote research in leadership, innovation and management behaviour. The Centre for Entrepreneurship and Marketing (CrEaM) was established to stimulate research in all areas of socio-economic development activity. With regards international activity the Business School has a significant number of international students and also has a number of partnership and flying faculty arrangements with institutions overseas. 7
