1 Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, College of Health Professions The University of Tennessee Health Science Center s College of Health Professions, invites applications for a twelve-month tenure track appointment for the position of Professor/Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs has responsibility for providing oversight, innovative, collaborative and strategic leadership for the planning, development, implementation, maintenance and monitoring of all aspects of the academic vision for the College of Health Professions, including long range academic planning; adding and shaping new academic programs and departments; reviewing and crafting academic policies, procedures and systems; supervising accreditation procedures and documentation and program reviews; evaluation of course offerings and schedules. Exciting opportunities exist for the candidate to shape new programs and departments within the College. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs is a key member of the College s Executive Committee and the Dean s Council, and reports to Stephen E. Alway, Ph.D., FACSM, Dean, College of Health Professions. Candidates with a clinical, applied, and/or basic science research foci that is complementary to research in movement and rehabilitative sciences, audiology & speech pathology, diabetes/obesity, bone biology, cancer cachexia and/or muscle biology are especially encouraged to apply. Very competitive salary and benefits, and with an active research program, excellent startup funds and laboratory space will be provided to the successful candidate. The position is based in Memphis, Tennessee, but has responsibilities to College campuses in Memphis, and Knoxville (and with plans to expand to Nashville). Minimum qualifications: Earned PhD or EdD Documented accomplishments in research, teaching, and service at a level to be appointed as an Associate or Full Professor in one of the academic departments of the College of Health Professions Evidence of nationally recognized and productive scholarship/research program A demonstrated commitment to affirmative action and to meeting student and faculty needs in a culturally diverse environment. Strong administrative desire with exceptional leadership skills Excellent oral and written communication skills At least three years of academic administrative experience as an Assistant Dean, Departmental/Division Chair or Vice/Assistant Chair Experience with academic program and curricular development. Ability to work independently, as well as to work with others in a team environment
2 Ability to establish and maintain rapport with faculty, staff, and students in the academic and professional environment Committed to diversity and inclusivity Detail-, goal- and task-oriented Adhere to deadlines and other requests Experience and knowledge in faculty promotion and tenure processess Desired qualifications: Knowledge of unique needs of students in pre-health and health professional programs Experience with distance education, technology, and multiple campuses Demonstrated ability to mentor students, faculty and alumni Experience in working with diverse populations Experience with conducting and directing research and/or other scholarly activities including having a strong record of peer-reviewed publications, and extramural funding success in muscle biology, exercise science, rehabilitation science, speech pathology & audiology, or other areas of research strength in the College of Health Professions Experience with the accreditation process in one or more programs represented in the College of Health Professions Demonstrated excellence in teaching and experience in curricular development of undergraduate science intensive BS degree granting program and graduate programs Experience with the supervision of personnel Demonstrated ability to manage numerous, complex tasks in a timely manner Demonstrated ability to lead groups Demonstrated leadership and problem-solving skills Demonstrated ability to be an engaging communicator Demonstrated ability with strong organizational and planning skills to handle multiple, time-sensitive responsibilities, set priorities and meet deadlines Demonstrated ability to be a creative thinker who is bold and innovative (i.e., thinks outside the box ) especially as it relates to curricular and program development Experience in working in a fast-paced and changing environment Experience as Assistant Dean, Associate Dean, Chair or Interim Chair of a department that is closely related to allied health or exercise physiology Specific responsibilities include: General operations: Working closely with the Dean to assure College, faculty and student success Creating and facilitating harmonious and collegial relationships with colleagues across all three College campuses Appropriately representing the College and administration to all stakeholders so as to foster positive relationships
3 Overseeing appropriate staff personnel to ensure duties are performed to a high standard. Responsible for the development of goals, assignment of specific responsibilities and projects, and evaluation of academic affairs personnel Collaborating within the Executive Committee to implement and evaluate the strategic plan Providing input into the strategic planning process and the budget process in areas related to academic affairs programs Working with the Senior Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies to ensure integration of research and education across all of the college s academic programs Collaborating with the Dean, Associate/Assistant Deans, Department Chairs, and program directors to assess needs and develop proposals for new programs and College Departments and recommend necessary adjustments to current academic programs and promotion guidelines to meet a changing health care environment Serving on committees and performing other tasks of the Department, College and Campus, as assigned by the Dean Supporting daily operations of the College of Health Professions, representing the Dean in the Dean s absence, and performing other duties as assigned by the Dean Participating in meetings of programs advisory committees/boards when invited. Participate in teaching in the areas of expertise represented in the College, and other College or institutional service activities Coordinating College level promotion and tenure reviews and recommending changes to this process as appropriate. Establishing liaisons with other institutions to explore cross-institutional academic programs and course offerings Lead the faculty by example by maintaining a research and scholarship program. All other duties as assigned Academic Affairs: Fostering academic excellence that enables successful curriculum matriculation through graduation. This requires oversight of the College s early warning program and coordination of tutoring services in conjunction with the campus personnel. Recruiting and overseeing staff for counseling students who are referred or self-referred for academic performance issues Ensuring an accurate record of student academic performance Overseeing non-honor council academic disciplinary issues, informing students of committee and/or dean decisions, and ensuring that requirements are met Coordinating development of policies to regulate the classroom schedules with Associate/Assistant Dean(s) in Memphis and Knoxville Oversight management of the College s student computing environment and administration of distance education programs for the Memphis campus Creating, reviewing, updating, and executing college academic affairs policies. Also working with University administrative offices to develop and implement institutional academic and student policies.
4 Providing leadership for curriculum development, including interprofessional education (IPE), course delivery, and assessment. This includes oversight for course creation and examination schedules and for the integrated examination and item analysis. Overseeing assessment of academic programs in conjunction with the Coordinator of Assessment Providing oversight in evaluation of instructional effectiveness through course evaluations. This is done in conjunction with the Coordinator for Assessment, the chair of the curriculum committee, and the Office of Institutional Effectiveness in the Health Science Center. Providing necessary academic performance information for the Honors, Awards & Scholarship committee Overseeing data collection, analysis, and interpretation on the College s effectiveness in Academic Affairs Working with appropriate individuals to ensure that SACS accreditation needs are met and that the academic programs of the College are compliant with current accreditation standards. Oversees creation of necessary reports for accreditation processes. Communicating and providing reports regarding student academic success. Collaborating with Department Chairs and Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic, Faculty, and Student Affairs and others to prepare reports related to student matters for various constituents and audiences (university administration, Tennessee Higher Education Commission, regulatory agencies) Ensuring that programs conform to laws, regulations, and policies Formulating, reviewing, and updating academic standards and policies, and revising the `Catalogue Committee assignments: Serving as an ex officio, non-voting member of the Academic Standing and Promotion Review Committee Serving as an ex officio member of the College Curriculum Committee Serving as a member of the Dean s Executive Council Serving on the Council of Academic & Student Affairs Deans (CASA) and other campus and College committees as requested Other committees as assigned by the Dean The College of Health Professions The College serves as an administrative home for allied health programs offered through the Departments of Audiology and Speech Pathology, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Health Informatics and Information Management, Physical therapy and Occupational Therapy ( Other departments will be added to the College over the next 3 years, as the college moves to an exciting phase of unprecedented growth in research, education, and clinical service under the leadership of the new Dean, Stephen E. Alway, PhD., F.A.C.S.M.
