6 FO R H E RECORD NEWS APRIL 2, 2018 Iam delighted meeting you again after my inaugural address to this noble congregation about three months ago. he necessity for the regular meetings with you, which I have taken as a cardinal instrument of my administration, is hinged on my belief in wider and constant consultation with the key stakeholders like you. his kind of meeting will not only give us the opportunity to think together to arrive at consensus and mutual understanding; it will also be an avenue of thrashing out unfounded rumours that might threaten our unity of purpose. I am of the view that silenced thought is rebellious. So, let me at the outset implore you that you will be regularly invited for this kind of meeting and I hope you will always take advantage of the opportunities to honestly guide the administration in sailing the ship of this University to its lionized destination. Like I have always said, we are in this ship together, and it must not sink. he sequential series of debilitating events in the last few weeks, and which coincidentally marked the beginning of the first quarter of my first year in office, have been worrisome for me. hey, therefore, need some critical examination in this kind of forum so as to enable us see together the extent of their impact on our morale and unity of purpose. Examining them will also enable us derive from them better understanding that could rekindle the spirit of selfsacrifice, which I solicit from you always for the collective purpose of moving the University to the greatest height. With all sense of humility, I wish to reiterate my philosophy of motivating you all to be active crew members of this giant ship that fate has tasked me to captain at this point in time. I sincerely appeal to your sense of unwavering commitment to duty laced with enduring spirit of sacrifice. Like I have always said; my appointment as the Vice- 6 his Ship Must Not Sink! Address delivered by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, at the Meeting he held with all th University staff on Monday, 26 March, 2018, at the University Auditorium Chancellor of this great University is God's wish. Any other person could have been. So, I have taken my appointment as an absolute duty divinely charged on me to sustain and improve the reputation and glory of this University for which I must not fail, Insha Allah. But the arduous task cannot be successfully accomplished without your support. hat is why I have continually and passionately appealed at different fora that your support is my victory. If I need to repeat this plea for your support continuously for umpteen times, I will not hesitate to do so. Let the spirit of sacrifice that has been defining our work ethics in this University, and which many of us have taken to be much greater than our personal gains, ambitions and sentiments, continue to inhabit us. We cannot afford to let this ship sink for a moment; even in the face of stark reality that we cannot avoid running into stormy weather. We h a d a t s e v e r a l o c c a s i o n s encountered great tempest in our voyage. But with our spirit of sacrifice; with our commitment to a larger goal, with our resilient d i s p o s i t i o n t o o v e r c o m i n g challenges; we had waded through without any discernable dent on our togetherness and commitment to the larger goal of moving on to a greater height. It needs to be stated that the debilitating events in the last few weeks are clarion call for Prof. Abdulkareem reaffirmation of our enduring spirit of selfless pursuance of our corporate goal. By the time I took the mantle of leadership of this University, I was farsighted enough to envisage some intermittent occasions of misunderstandings that could threaten what we stand for in this University. his is why I passionately appeal that such s p o r a d i c o c c a s i o n s o f misunderstanding should not be allowed to cause division or result in segregation. With unity of purpose and in togetherness of our actions, we can move the Himalayas. I am still using this opportunity to repeat my appeal that when there is the need to make compromises, concessions and negotiations, let us make it with genuine purpose for the common good that binds us together. Let our compromises, concessions and negotiations emanate from our tenacity to make success of Unilorin Project; without succumbing to prejudice or malicious dictate from outside. On my own part, I remain committed to exemplary, honest, disciplined, transformational, prudent, embracing and Godfearing leadership. Like I have always said, I will always sacrifice self-interest for collective interest in the execution of every policy and in

7 FORNE HE RD WRECO S his Ship Must Not Sink! making sure the interest of everybody and every union on this campus is adequately protected. I have vehemently pursued this principle in my intervention to resolve the critical issues like the Earned Allowances that have actually tested my strength of character and courage of conviction. What I have come to realize is that, as a leader, I have to contend with the old-age struggle the war between the war of the crowd on the one side and the voice of my conscience on the other side. It then means that, as a leader, I should realize that in resolving issues for the larger goal, I cannot escape censures; but it will amount to weakness on my part to be affected by the censures, which are rarely justified. I have learnt to have confidence in the larger goal that binds us together in the face of criticisms, even when the criticisms are unjustified. In my efforts to resolve the teething issues, I have taken risks. Of course, a leader is not worth his salt if he is not ready to take risks for a greater cause. I believe in the greater cause that has been driving this University the cause of moving the University higher and higher with its reputation; and with what it is known for to continuously remain intact. I strongly believe in the sanctity and stability of the University. his is why I will remain committed soul and body, even risking them, to ensure that we do not degenerate into the harrowing past that we would not want to recall again. his does not mean we would not negotiate to cater for the interest of everybody and every union. Indeed, our resolve is to make everyone have the feeling that the University belongs to all of us; and together, we can all rejoice in the confidence that Unilorin remains on top for ever. Some leaders are constrained not to talk at all in order not to be accused of 'mistalking'; they are also often constrained not to act in order not to be adjudged of being wrong or having 'misacted'. But this is not my personality. I believe in speaking the truth with frankness. I believe in acting when there is the need to act. his is because as Confucius said to know what is right and not doing it is the worst cowardice". However, I appeal to you all to understand my personality, which is essentially built on informed frankness. Let everyone understand that I will say No! when there is a threat to our common goal. Quoting Gandhi, a 'No' uttered from deepest conviction is better and greater than a 'Yes' merely uttered to please. So, let everyone bear with me and understand me as a leader that will yield with graciousness and oppose with informed firmness. When there is a need for me to apologise for my frailty as an imperfect mortal, I will not hesitate to do so as long as the need for the apology is driven by the larger goal of sustaining and improving the glory of this University. On your part, do not hesitate to tell me when I am wrong. As Napoleon Bonaparte once said, the people to fear are not those who disagree with you, but those who disagree with you but do not tell you to your face out of cowardice or sycophancy. A friend once told me a joke with reverberating: A blind person asked God: Can there be anything worse than losing eye sight? God replied that: Yes, losing your vision. It is on this lighter note I appeal that we should not lose our vision for this University; the vision that has been defining what we are, what we stand for and what we are known with. Let the larger goal continue to override all our actions. Let us put malice and personal ego aside and march on as trained and loyal army willing to sacrifice for the good of our common goal. Loyalty, in this sense, to me, means nothing unless it has at its heart the absolute principle of self-sacrifice of personal gains and aggrandizements. At this juncture, I need to let you know that honest efforts and self-sacrifice at sustaining and improving the glory of this University will not go unrewarded at our own level. I equally know that the Almighty Pay-Master will never fail to reward us all accordingly. I must also then thank and appreciate all academic staff of this University for making the highest level of self-sacrifice and self-denial in their commitment to the larger goal and commitment to what we stand for even in the face of external or internal threats and inducements. Remember, this ship our dear ship must not sink! I believe your motivation is derived from your strong conviction in the greatness of the selfless service you are rendering to our younger generations; and for which no amount of money can compensate. he God Almighty will continue to give you the contentment of mind and stand for you at all times of your needs. hank you for listening. 12 Fake news: buyers beware here is a phrase that has been made popular by the American President, Donald rump, in his relentless attacks on the traditional media since the days of his campaigns for the American Presidency: fake news. Mr Donald rump managed to give fake news, which had always existed, a lot of traction so much that the popularity of the phrase in political discourse and general usage soared: it rose by 365% in use in 2017 and emerged the Collin's Dictionary word of the year But beyond its use in political discourse to discredit the media, fake news is actually a living monstrosity that requires serious attention in Nigeria before it wreaks more havoc than it has done already on the fragile polity. Fake news has become an industry by which mischievous, foul, manipulative and disgruntled Nigerians seek to destabilise the country and poison unsuspecting minds with fabricated hogwash disguised as news stories. Such news are doses of disaster in the making. he authors of fake news are as guilty as those who share them. In fact, those who gleefully share fake news and rumours are more dangerous than the authors because of the adage that says the one who helps a thief is a bigger thief. his is because without the helper's hand, no theft would have been committed. Detecting fake news and just walking away, at least if one cannot debunk it, is not rocket science. Distributors of fake news should be careful and its buyers should beware. here are at least three indicators of fake news. Such news stories are factually inaccurate; they are optimized for sharing with sensational details and they are created to obscure or distort issues with emotions, preying on people's prejudice or bias. Most of the posts on the social media that solicit sharing are fake. As a good product advertises itself, proverbially, authentic and useful news does not require sharing solicitation as people would naturally want to share it. here are three major types of fake news as well, based on J. Davis' Beyond the Myth of Objectivity (1990). here are "clickbaits" often with sensational headlines that are aimed at attracting clicks to generate traffic and advert revenue. If someone who bears the name of a prominent public figure dies and the familiar name is shouted, people naturally want to know what happened, naturally thinking of the personality. here are also sponsored contents that are given the garb of independent journalism in order to sway the public, though they are public relations spins and advertisement. hen, there is fabricated journalism which consists of false reports with quotes and sources. here are many websites and blogs today that only wish to draw attention to themselves and generate revenue through hoaxes that attract interest. Since mere words can create war and prevent conflict, it is essential that Nigerians verify the information they receive especially through the social media and some websites so that they may be more at peace with themselves and others. People with sick sense of judgement do not consider the long-term implications of fake news for life and security. hey only focus on the immediate gains. Following some of the tips offered by Dr Philip Seargeant of he Open University of the United Kingdom will help individuals to guard against being influenced by fake news peddled by people with hidden motives. According to the Senior Lecturer in Applied Linguistics, the first rule of the thump is to check the source of the story and decide if it is reputable. If the website lacks credibility, the news cannot have it much. hen, a good story is not just on one website. here are exclusives quite all right but usually, news breaks just as dawn breaks for everyone. Also, the agenda has to be determined. What is the motive of the author? Other tips include: go beyond the headline; you won't find this on mainstream media; crosscheck data sources and check the context, among others. Just last Monday while addressing the staff of the University, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, warned against "unfounded rumours". Rumours ruin organisations and fake news freak out the society, making it go wild. It is very important to verify news or whatever information we have and it is only after verification that we can make informed judgement. It is in this regard that the Glorious Qur'an warns: "O you who believe! If a Faasik (liar, evil person) comes to you with any news, verify it, lest you should harm people in ignorance, and afterwards you become regretful for what you have done." (Q. 49:6). Ultimately, the Four-Way-est of Herbert aylor, which has been adopted by the Rotary Club and the Ghanaian judicial system, should be be applied to dealing with fake news and rumours that many people spread or share without much thinking: 1. Is it the truth? 2. Is it fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned? If the questions are satisfactorily and affirmatively answered, there is every tendency that elements of fake news would have been screened out drastically. It is expedient to consciously work against fake news and rumours to achieve sanity and decorum in the society because to be misinformed is to be deformed. CONGRAULAIONS! "he Alma Mater" congratulates the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Bolaji F. Sule, and the Registrar-designate, Dr (Mrs) Folaranmi M. Olowoleni, on their appointments and wishes them successful tenures. Having been privileged to work with the two, he has no doubt that the University will continue to wax stronger and grow in leaps and bounds with the two Principal Officers in their respective offices.
