1 ANNUAL REPORT ASSAM SISHU KALYAN SADAN Honorable President Advisors & officer-bearers and members of Managing committee, Superintendent, house mother, accountant, invited guests and very dear children and well-wishers. At the outset I bow my head to those selfess persons who left no stone unturned for the establishment of Assam Sishu Kalyan Sadan almost sixty years back. I express my heartfelt thanks to all for bestowing the responsibility of secretary of the managing committee upon me. During the last two years of our tenure, I along with the advisors, office-bearers and members of the managing committee tried to carry on our duties for all round development of Assam Sishu Kalyan Sadan with utmost sincerity. Many of us may not be aware of the history of Sadan. Therefore, a brief account regarding its establishment is given herewith. With the initial establishment of Assam Sishu Kalyan Sadan the name of a philanthropist of Assam must be mentioned. He is none other than Late Kamakhya Ram Baruah. Almost sixty years back in 1956 Late Kamakhya Ram Baruah donated about 16 bighas of land for Social cause. Of those 16 bighas, the Sishu Sadan was established on 8 bighas. From old records and photographs it can be assumed that the sadan was very simple and small. But the idea and philosophy behind it must be praiseworthy. It is because of the magnanimity and foresightedness of a few selfless persons, a home for the abandoned children was established in On 5 th September of 1956 Late Amal Prova Baruah and few of her friends convened a public meeting of the bank of Dighalpukhuri of Guwahati. Agenda of that meeting was protection to abandoned and insecured children and ladies. In this meeting it was devided to establish an institute by the name Axom Nari aru Sishu Kalyan Sadan. Late Kamakhya Ram Baruah donated the huge plot of land for the above purpose. The executive committee formed at that time with those kind hearted personalities is given below:- 1. Late Hema Kakati (Member) I take this opportunity to remember those dedicated personalities with humble reverence who sacrified their valuable time and energy for uplift men of many abandoned children. New Naming of Sadan:- In the managing committee meeting held on 25 th April, 1957 the name of this home was changed from Axom Nari Sishu Kalyan sadan to Assam Sishu Kalyan sadan and was registered as such under Societies Registration Act. Main Aims of Sadan:- The main aim of Sadan is to provide food, clothing, shelter and education to the children kept in it and to uplift them mentally so that they can thrive in society with high esteem after leaving this children home. Joshna Lahkar (Music) To generate compassion and discipline the children of ASKS are divided into three houses, namely a) Indira Miri House b) Malati Baruah House

8 c) Amal Prova House Meetings of these houses are held in presesnce of counselors, Superintendent, house mother and Secretary at an interval of 2-3 months. The houses are judged as 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd basing on their regular activities and accordingly prizes are given. Superintendent Smti Dipali Mazumdar Deka and House mother smti Kabita Deka instruct the children to carry on their daily activities, starting from morning prayer, yoga, cleaning of office room, cleaning of the dormitories, washing own clothes, writing of news paper headlines, maintenance of discipline in house and school, attendance in tution class etc. Moreover, superintendent takes classes of some children in the morning. We offer our heartfelt thanks to both the superintendent Dipali Mazumdar Deka and the house mother Kabita Deka for carrying on their duties with utmost sincerity. The home tutors of different subjects, the game teacher, the yoga teacher, the art teacher, the music teacher, the computer teacher are also offering their service with utmost sincerity. Our heartfelt thanks to all of them. Sri Mati Baideu and Smti Abala Boro extending their selfless service for betterment of ASKS from the time its inception. We owe our gratitude to both of them. To run the activities of the Sadan, the role of Managing committee is immense. I offer my sincere thanks and heartfelt gratitude to each and every number of the managing committee starting from Advisers, all the office bearers, members of managing committee for their Constant and all round help. The role of the sub-committees must also be praised for their timely activities and help. My heartfelt thanks to each and every member of the different sub-committees. From the year 2000 onwards Shri Ashok Kr. Jalan is looking after the audit of all financial transactions of ASKS without taking any honorarium. This year ( ) also he has done the audit of ASKS. Our heartfelt thanks to him. The financial matters of Sadan is looked after with utmost sincerity by Accountant Shri Hiranya Kr.Patowary. Our sincere gratitude to him. The activities leading to the uplift ment of the children of ASKS have been possible only because of a large number of kind hearted people from the cross-section of society. It is their benevolance that ASKS is thriving from the time of its inception till to-day. We are confident that the number of such personalities will increase day by day and Sadan will be able to take care of such children in future too. Our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all of them. Lists of such donors are enclosed in the annual report. I apologise if the name of any donor is missed or omitted inadvertently. Achievements of Children of ASKS : We have 32 children in Sadan. They are pursuing studies in different school and colleges. In addition to academics they are taking training on dance, music, yoga, art and computer etc.

9 Smti Mandira Das is studying in 4 th semester, B.A. at Pachim Guwahati College with major in Education. The authority of Pachim Guwahati College gave her free admission in B.A. course. We take this opportunity to offer our heartfelt thanks to the authority, mainly Principal of Pachim Guwahati College Dr. Balen Das for his kind gesture. Other two inmates Smti Tapashya Kalita and Smti Chayanika Bharali completed nursing course from Gauri Seva Peeth of Maligaon. Both of them were imparted practical training of nursing at Goenka Nursing home of Bharalumukh, Guwahati. Smti Tapashya Kalita served as nurse in Goenka Nursing home from April,2016 to May,2016. Presently she is working in Phoenix diagnostic centre. Smti Chayanika Bharali is undergoing special training at Saikia Hospital, Maligaon. Our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to both Goenka Nursing home and Saikia Hospital. Another inmate Smti Chanchala Sarkar is under going ward girl training at East End Nursing home, Bamunimaidan, Guwahati. She is given free accommodation in the hospital hostel for nurses. We offer our heartfelt thanks to the authority of East End Nursing home and Mrs Meenakshi Borthakur for their kind gesture. Smti Mousumi Das passed higher Secondary examination from Pandu College. She has taken admission in Bachelor course on dance at Luit Konwar Rudra Barua Govt. Music college, at Silpagram, Panjabari, Guwahati. Meeting of Managing Committee In the year four managing committee meetings were held in ASKS. Few of the important resolutions taken in those meetings are mentioned below: 1) The proposal of working president Shri Gunavi Ram Das to renovate the previously named Balak Bhavan was welcomed by all the members of the managing committee. Accordingly its renovation is complete by now. 2) According to J.J. Act, children above 18 years of age cannot be accommodated in a children home. In conformity with this Smti Mandira Das, Smti Mousumi Das, Smti Tapashya Kalita and Smti Chayanika Bharali are given private accommodation near their colleges and work place. 3) A six year old girl by the name Priyanka Roy has been admitted in Sadan as per request of CWC. 4) PWD of Govt of Assam has sanctioned Rs. 10 lacs for construction of a new Assam Type Building in the Sadan premises. The construction sub-committee placed this proposal before the managing committee and it has been approved by the managing committee. The construction of the building is complete. 5) Construction of another RCC building is going on in the Sadan premises Rs.15 lacs and 24 thousand for this building has been donated by Oil India Ltd, Pipeline, Narengi, Guwahati. 6) A series of competitions an games & sports were held among the children in memory of Poonam K.C. Nath, Prizes were distributed among the winners by the famly members of Poonam K.C. Nath on 10 th October, 2015.

10 Events: Mausumi Das received a Tablet Mobile from Government of Assam for Securing 2 nd Division (53%) in H.S.L.C Exam, Jalukbari Kendriya Nagorik Samiti & Gaonrakhi Bahini & Police Commissioner Jyotirmoy Chakraborty came to Assam Sishu Kalyan Sadan and had an interactive session with the children. The children presented a chorus On the occasion of Yoga Day, Yoga teacher, Kaushik Das of ASKS did a yoga session with the children. On this occasion Nomita Das of Class V was declared as the best yoga student and she was awarded a prize by the teacher On the occasion of Independance Day the National Flag was hoisted by our oldest resident Srimoti Devi & Execuitive Member of Managing Committee Smti. Premoda Nath.Mrs. Nath spoke about Independence Day to the children. Some students of Assam Engineering College Organised an art competition among the children in the Sadan premises and gave away prizes to the winners. From DC Office Kamrup (M) packets of Snacks were sent to the children on the occasion of Independance Day Dr. Ramani Barman & Smti. Dipti Deka accompanied Miss Kiran Bala Devi, a visually impaired singer to ASKS. Kiranbala presented few melodious songs. Children of ASKS also took part in the programme The NGO RAKSHA took the children of ASKS to Shraddhanjali Kanon to Participate in a cultural programme. Dr. Ramani Barman accompanied them To uplift the Vocabulary of the children Asstt. Secretary of ASKS Mrs. Priyam Bora organised an instant speech competition among the children NGO RAKSHA took the children to the Gandhi Mandap to participate in a programme on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. DC office Kamrup (M) provided the vehicle for their Transport State Bank of India donated a Refrigerator, an aqua guard, two stand fans to sadan. They also presented instrument boxes to each of the children In memory of Late Punom K.C.Nath a series of game competitions were held in presence of game teacher Sri Kumud Bezbaruah & the family members of Punam K.C.Nath. Prizes were given to the winners Captain Rabin Bordoloi visited Assam Sishu Kalyan Sadan along with NGO RAKSHA. They donated clothes for the children and gave sweets to them.

11 Shantisobha of Kumarpara, Guwahati invited our Children to their cultural programme in connection with Durga Puja. The girls of ASKS presented a Yoga and Dance with modern song. House Mother Kabita Deka & Metron Abala Boro accompanied them Under the leadership of Counsellor of ASKS Mrs. Meenakshi Barthakur, few students of Don Bosco University visited the Sadan. An interactive session was held. Girls of Sadan rendered two songs On the occasion of Birth Anniversary celebration of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika few girls of ASKS participated in the chorus at Bhupen Hazarika Samadhikhetra. House Mother Kabita Deka accompanied them Few members of Rotary club (East) visited the children of ASKS and they organised an interactive session with the girls of ASKS. The girls rendered songs. The Rotarians donated warm clothes for the children On the Occasion of Dipawali Radio Luit of Guwahati University organised a Programme where our inmates expressed their views on Dipawali and other social themes Children s Day was celebrated BIBIAN (93-98) organised a Magic show in the Sadan premises, Magician Bikram Talukdar showed magic to the children. They donated Rs. 10, to ASKS Rotary Club of Guwahati East took the children of ASKS to Science Museum. They donated blankets for the children and gave the children packet lunch. Secretary Dr. Manju Rani Devi, Counsellor Mrs. Meenakshi Barthakur and House Mother Ms. Kabita Deka accompanied them Few officials of IOCL came to donate Tables, a Computer for the library & Garden Chairs and a meeting was held in the Sadan Premises. President Dr. Chandra Prabha Baruah, Working President Mr. Gunavi Ram Das were Present Children of Sadan along with the Staff and workers went for a picnic. They Visited Doul Govinda, Ashwaklanta, and Deergheswari Temple. The expense of the bus (Rs ) was given by Shri Shyam Sundar Deka Debating, Recitation, Extempore speech & Story telling competition were held amongst the children of ASKS, under the supervision of Dr. Juthika Das & Dr. Indira Saikia Bora Foundation stone of the new building was laid by Dr. Chandra Prabha Baruah, President of ASKS and Mr. Parameshwar Sarma, Treasurer of ASKS. Mrs. Dipali Mazumdar Deka, Superintendent and Smti Kabita Deka, House Mother ASKS also extended their hands on the occasion. The fund for this building was given by social welfare department, Govt. of Assam.

12 On the occasion of Republic Day, Srimoti Devi hoisted the National Flag in Assam Sishu Kalyan Sadan Premises. Smti. Promoda Nath Attended the meeting Foundation stone of the building sanctioned by Oil India Limited, Pipeline was laid by Dr. Chandra Prabha Baruah, President ASKS, and Mrs. Promada Nath Few children of ASKS attended a programme by Assam State commission for protection of Child Rights. Ms. Kabita Deka accompanied them. Miss Mausumi Das, inmate of ASKS presented a dance item in the programme. Conveyance for the children was provided by the organisers A free health camp was held from Nilokantha Welfare Society. MEETINGS AND TRAINING ATTENDED BY THE STAFF: Mrs. Dipali Mazumdar Deka, Superintendent, ASKS attended a meeting on New Adoption Guideline at Silpagram, Guwahati Dr. Manju Rani Devi, Secretary, ASKS attended a meeting of State Child Protection Society at Guwahati Medical College Auditorium The First Meeting of Home Management Committee was held at ASKS. DCPO, Mrs. Binjumoni Das was present as guest of honour from CWC Mrs. Meenakshi Barthakur, Counsellor, ASKS attended a meeting of State Child Protection Society, Guwahati on revised Individual Care Plan Chandan Das, Case Worker, ASKS attended a meeting of Child Welfare Committee, Guwahati on issues relating to Track Child.
