Top 3 factors students reported as contributing to satisfaction with college results include: I was accepted to colleges that were a good fit for me I was accepted to one of my top choice colleges I am proud to share with others the colleges to which I was accepted.
Top 3 factors students reported as contributing to dissatisfaction with college results: I do not feel as though my acceptances are what others expect from a student at Hunter I was not accepted to a top tier or ivy league school I was not accepted to colleges that I am proud to share with my friends and family
What would you have done differently throughout high school knowing what you know now? I would have asked for more help from teachers when I was struggling Don't stress about getting into a name-brand college and focus on studying what you love Try to discover more about myself so I can have a better idea of which college suited me. Not worry too much about everything I would have prepared myself better for the stress of senior year I would have done more things for the sole purpose of making me happy I would've spent more time with my friends, and done more to make me happy, not what I thought would get me into college. Participated in more clubs/extracurriculars I would have not done extracurriculars that I wasn't interested in solely for the purpose of getting into college. Worked harder on academics
What advice would you give to younger students in regards to the college process? Trust the process. Apply to schools you actually like and spend time figuring that out Don't compare with your friends. Apply to schools that you want to go to! Who cares what other people want! Please don't focus on applying to big name schools for the sake of their prestige. Apply to schools you genuinely find a good fit for yourself. - Balance your list. Visit schools! It's not the only thing that matters in high school. Sleep more Sleep more Sleep more Be proud of yourself no matter where you go No single thing will make or break an app, one bad score doesn't define you and one college decision doesn't either.
What advice would you give to parents of younger students in regards to to the college process? Discuss with your child the role that they want you to play in the process/the role YOU want to play in the process. Balance is key. Make a plan and stick to it. Encourage your child no matter what. Trust your child! Don't make them let you read their essay (my parents didn't read my common app essay or any supplements but my guidance counselor did.) Encourage students to build relationships with teachers, counselors and administration. Tell your children to sleep.
What advice would you give to parents of younger students in regards to to the college process? If cost is an issue, be up front with your child rather than springing it on them at the last minute. Be willing to have frank discussions with your child about financing a college education. Parents should let their kids take the reigns on the college process but still be a support system. Trust the counseling department when they say a school is a reach. Fit is ALWAYS more important than prestige! Name brand colleges does not exclude other schools from also being good (Stigma around SUNYs). There are many more schools than the Ivy league. For the love of all that is good stop pushing your kids toward schools you want them to go to if you know they're indifferent to or against them
