12 by Kunle Akogun From Obafemi to Olowoleni, a nifty change of baton T he Valedictory Lecture delivered last Monday (April 23, 2018) by Mr. Emmanuel Dada Obafemi to mark the end of his tour of duty as the fifth Registrar of the University of Ilorin was as innovative as this Monday's (April 30, 2018) Personality Lecture to usher in the sixth Registrar, Dr. (Mrs.) Folaranmi Modupe Olowoleni, is ingenious. Not only are these innovations part of the creative management for which Unilorin is well-known nationally, they are also veritable symbolisms of imaginative score card presentation on one hand and inventive agenda setting on the other. In both content and packaging, the two events are historic and they sufficiently capture the whole essence of an intellectual community. Even though his lecture, entitled A Child of Circumstance, was a mere account of his career trajectory, Mr. Obafemi held the audience spell-bound for more than 50 minutes, as he reeled out facts and figures to back up his modest achievements as the Chief Administrative Officer of the University of Ilorin as well as his unmistakable exploits in the field of soccer as a FIFAbadged referee! On the other hand, today's Personality Lecture to usher in the new Registrar will be delivered by Chief Yunusa Foloruso Oyeyemi, a veteran public servant, who had the rare privilege of combining the experience of a fulfilling civil service career with an engaging selfless service in quasipolitical appointments at both state and federal levels. To be sure, the octogenarian Offa traditional title holder is a wise choice to give a tutorial of sort to our new Registrar, Dr. Olowoleni, herself a consummate administrator, who has traversed the entire gamut of the University's administrative firmament, in her over 26 years of fruitful service to the institution. In his five-year tour of duty, Mr. Obafemi, the immediate past Registrar, introduced a number of innovations that invariably took university administration a notch higher, invigorating the whole essence of management with the ultimate aim of achieving better efficiency. Such initiatives include the monthly Registry Seminar, the monthly Office Technologists' Seminar for Secretaries, and the Unilorin Registry Annual Lecture Series. Most members of the University community are of the firm belief that Dr. Olowoleni is a very appropriate successor, who is poised to take the University to even greater heights. The new Registrar is bringing to the office a wellloaded bag of intimidating academic and professional attainments as well as managerial antecedents that would easily stand her out as an astute manager of men and resources. Her undisputable management acumen and intellectual inclination are part of the cutting edge that would invariably put Dr. Olowoleni in a vantage position to bring revolutionary changes to administrative processes in the University. The new Registrar, who joined the services of the University of Ilorin as a Principal Planning Officer in the Academic Planning Unit of the Vice-Chancellor's Office on January 20, 1992, is a 1982 graduate of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. She is a holder of the Master of Business Administration (MBA), M.Sc. in Management Science and Ph.D. in Business Administration, all from the University of Ilorin. Dr. Olowoleni, who has served at various times as Chief Planning Officer and Principal Assistant Registrar, was appointed Deputy Registrar in Born in Lokoja, Kogi State on April 19, 1961, Dr Olowoleni, a native of Takete-Isao, Yagba-East Local Government Area of Kogi State, had her early education at St. Louis Private Primary School, Bompai, Kano, between 1971 and 1972; and St. Louis Secondary School, Kano, before proceeding to ABU, Zaria in After the mandatory one year national youth service in Bauchi, the Registrar commenced her civil service career in 1984 with the Kwara State Ministry of Finance and Economic Development as a Planning Officer II, moving to the newly created Kogi State in 1991, from where she transferred her services to the University of Ilorin in A member of several professional bodies including the Association of Nigerian University Professional Administrators (ANUPA) and the equivalent International body, the Association of University Administrators (AUA), Manchester, United Kingdom, Dr. Olowoleni is the current Chairperson of the University of Ilorin Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Management. The Registrar has been honoured with many awards and she has received several commendations from the University Management among which, is a Merit Award as Administrator of the Year from the University of Ilorin Merit Awards Committee, Merit Award from the Postgraduate Students' Association, University of Ilorin as an Advocate of Due Process; Letter of Appreciation from the Registrar, University of Ilorin on the Successful Hosting of the 52nd Business Meeting of Registrars of Nigerian Universities; Letter of Appreciation and Commendation from the Dean, Postgraduate School on the Timely Submission of Postgraduate Results for the Subsequent Approval of Senate despite the Short Timeline among others. In her very first media interview shortly after her appointment, Dr. Olowoleni told Unilorin Bulletin that members of the University community as well as other critical stakeholders of the institution should look forward to better and professional services, pointing out that we have been very lucky that we have had people of good character that have been Registrars before me So, they have put some things on ground for me to build on. Surely, it's the dawn of another golden era at the University Registry! Town and Gown wishes Dr. (Mrs.) Olowoleni God's guidance in the onerous task to take the University to the next level. Once again, congratulations, Madam Registrar! To download a copy of UNILORIN BULLETIN weekly, visit: For all correspondences, send your to info@unilorin.edu.ng Editor: Kunle Akogun UNILORIN PRESS
