2 Why study in Australia? Australia offers 8 world class universi.es within its pres.gious Group of 8, 7 of which are in the top 100 of the QS World Rankings. Australian universi.es are recognised as world leaders in sport science, conserva.on, geology, geography, marine biology and environmental sciences and are leading researchers in solar and hydropower technologies. The country itself offers beaches, mountains, rainforests and ci.es with the world's lowest popula.on density. Plus, with everyone speaking English, there is no language barrier.

3 Why study in Australia? The degree structure in Australia tends to be more similar to the USA than to the UK, and therefore tends to be more flexible. As a student you select the subject you want to major in and 2/3 of the module you study will come from this area. The other 1/3 can come from anywhere. With this system you can double major, where you study two subjects equally. If it's not right for you, you can change major part-way through your degree. Generally, Australian university teaching involves a mixture of lectures and seminars with specific courses also running tutorials, placements and prac.cals. Rather than focusing on the learning of facts, Australian universi.es concentrate on helping you thoroughly understand a topic through debates and independent, crea.ve thought.

4 Semesters and Degree Types Australian universi.es split the year into two semesters: semester 1 normally begins in March and semester 2 in mid- July. Bachelor degree - 3 year undergraduate programme Bachelor degree with Honours - 4 year programme in which you would present a thesis through coursework or research in the final year. Double Degree - 5 year programme. Study within 2 facul.es; for example, Bachelor of Law and Science.

5 The Group of 8 The Group of Eight (Go8): universi.es in this group are considered to be the strongest in terms of the range of degrees offered and the quality of postgraduate research. The IRU network has na.onal reach, with an ins.tu.onal presence in every mainland State of Australia and the Northern Territory. 8 Entrance Requirements Check the individual university s requirements Eg. University of Melbourne Bachelor of Science requires English, Mathema.cs and one of Bio, Chem or Physics at IB/Bac. Some universi.es list preferred subjects. While these aren t always essen.al, you ll stand a greater chance of obtaining a place if you can provide evidence of prior learning in these areas. Eg. University of Adelaide Bachelor of Computer Science (Maths, Physics preferred)

11 ATAR Domes.c Applica.ons The ATAR (Australian Ter.ary Admissions Rank) is a ranking given to Australian applicants. Your ATAR ranking is what will get you into a university. Interna.onal qualifica.ons (eg IB/Bac) are converted into a ranking. Eg - If your ATAR is 70, you re in the top 30% of applicants.

16 Interna.onal Applicants (non- Australians) you can apply directly to the university rather than through the TAC (Ter.ary Admissions Centre) Your IB points will not be converted to ATAR Before you apply, check the minimum IB requirement

17 Interna.onal Applicants (non-australians): 2 choices: early applica.on or regular applica.on Early applica@on for an August start (semester 2) based on predicted grades (eg Monash + University of Sydney). Note that not all universi.es accept early applica.on based on predicted grades, and for those that do it will normally be only for certain degrees (e.g. Arts, Business, Engineering, Science, IT). If you apply with predicted grades, your ATAR equivalence will need to be 2 points above the standard ATAR for your degree. Apply directly to each university by late December with your predicted grades to start university in August. Up to 2 or 3 subject choices on one applica.on to each university. Receive a condi.onal offer, verify results in July and start in August. This procedure is almost never used by our students (.meline too.ght between getng final exam scores and star.ng university)

18 Interna.onal Applicants (non-australians): early applica.on or regular applica.on Regular apply with your final results to start February in the following year. Apply directly to each university any.me aqer results. No par.cular applica.on deadline, but earlier is bejer Up to 2 or 3 subject choices on one applica.on for each university Apply for accommoda.on (2 references) Generally will receive offers within 3 weeks Your accommoda.on will be confirmed aqer you receive an offer.

19 AEC Agency AEC (hjp:// are an educa.on consultancy based in Causeway Bay. They are appointed by the Australian government as the official representa.ve of Australian universi.es in HK. If you are applying to Australia, it is a very good idea to arrange a mee.ng with them: they will advise you on the latest admission procedures, finance, study visas and so on.
