2 Tohoku University is committed to providing education and research programs of the highest international caliber. Drawing on a common proud tradition, the many faculties, graduate schools, and associated research institutes are united in their aim to serve as a comprehensive center for creation of knowledge, and as a research university centering on the graduate schools in collaboration with education in the faculties. The Graduate School of Engineering, in the Tohoku University tradition of Research First, is equipped with the staff and facilities for carrying out research on the frontiers of knowledge. The educational goal of the Graduate School is to develop researchers with outstanding abilities, capable of original thinking, and engineers with highly specialized knowledge. They should be able to carry out their own creative research and play a major role in the progress and innovation of future science and technology, rooted in a broad perspective and deep knowledge of humanity and nature, with the aim of realizing a safe, fulfilling society. The Special Selection Program for Working Adults, intended for those who have worked as engineers, instructors, researchers or in other such vocations, allows students to put their work experiences to use in study and research, while also refreshing their knowledge and skills, or gaining knowledge and skills in new fields, through graduate school education, further developing their creative abilities. The Special Selection Program for Foreign Students is carried out in consideration of the differences in educational curricula and backgrounds in different countries. The Graduate School of Engineering looks for the following traits in prospective students The fundamental scholastic abilities for engineering studies, and a compelling desire to study in this Graduate School. The ability to develop original ideas and to undertake self-motivated research with strong persistence. The ability to work cooperatively as team members and communicate with others. A deep interest in nature and human society, and a desire to contribute to human welfare by creating future technologies benefiting people and the environment. Wide-ranging knowledge and the flexibility to put that knowledge to use, becoming engineers and researchers able to play active roles internationally.

Applicants other than the above for whom any of qualifications (1) to (8) below is true may apply for admission as General Applicants from Other Schools. Those eligible to apply for the Special Selection Program for Working Adults are, in principle, those who after graduating from university have worked for at least two years as engineers, instructors, researchers or the like at the time of entrance. The applicant must also satisfy at least one of the following qualifications (1) to (8) below is applicable. Those eligible to apply for the Special Selection Program for Foreign Students are those who have received a university education in Japan as foreign students or in an overseas university, and for whom any of qualifications (1) to (8) below is applicable.
4 The applicant: (1) Has earned a master's degree or professional degree, or expects to earn such a degree by March (2) Has earned a master's degree or equivalent professional degree, or expects to earn such a degree by March 2018, in the graduate school of a foreign university. (3) Has earned a master's degree or equivalent professional degree, or expects to earn such a degree by March 2018, by taking correspondence courses in Japan offered by schools outside Japan. (4) Has earned a master's degree or equivalent professional degree, or expects to earn such a degree by March 2018, by completing a course designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in an educational institution in Japan recognized as adopting the educational system of a foreign country and having the curriculum of a graduate school in that country. (5) Has earned a master's degree or equivalent professional degree, or expects to earn such a degree by March 2018, by graduating a program of the United Nations University. (6) Has been recognized as having achieved at least the academic equivalent of a master's degree through an educational program offered at 1 a foreign school, 2 educational institutions which have the curriculum of a graduate program, or 3 the United Nations University, and has passed the equivalency examination and screening process as stipulated in Clause 2, Article 16 of the Standards for the Establishment of a Graduate School (Act No. 28, 1974). (7) Meets either of the following criteria for eligibility specified by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology: (a) Has carried out research in a university or research institute, etc. for two or more years after graduating from university, and is recognized by this Graduate School as having achieved at least the equivalent academic abilities of someone with a master's degree on the basis of those research accomplishments. (b) Has carried out research in a university or research institute, etc. for two or more years after completing 16 years of course studies overseas, or after completing, in Japan, 16 years of foreign school course studies by means of correspondence courses conducted by foreign schools, and is recognized by this Graduate School as having achieved at least the equivalent academic abilities of someone with a master's degree on the basis of those research accomplishments. (8) Is aged 24 or above and, through individual admission qualification screening, is recognized by this Graduate School as having achieved at least the equivalent academic abilities of someone with a master's degree.

About acquiring VISA for examination (Temporary Visitor VISA) Applicants for the Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University, who live outside Japan and need to acquire a Temporary Visitor VISA (for examination) should receive an examination permit which our university will issue after we receive your application. Those who require us to issue an examination permit should include a request letter (any format) along with their application documents. Applicants are also required to send a photo (5cm long 4cm wide) in addition to the photo for the photo ID. Please write down your name and the name of the department to which you have chosen to apply on the reverse side of the photo. 5. Examination and Selection Examination dates: To take place from Tuesday, August 29 to Thursday, August 31, 2017 according to the attached schedule. 14 Applicants to the Special Selection Program for Working Adults will be selected based on overall consideration of a written essay, oral interview test results, and submitted documents. Applicants to the Special Selection Program for Foreign Students will be selected based on overall consideration of a written test or essay, oral interview test results, language proficiency, and submitted documents. 6. Announcement of Results Results are scheduled to be posted around 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 6, 2017, on the following website ( ) Notification of results will also be mailed to applicants. Please note that results cannot be given in response to telephone inquiries. 7. Enrollment Procedures, Etc. (1) Details of the enrollment procedures will be announced when the acceptance letter is mailed in the early February, (2) Fees necessary at the time of enrollment Students entering from another school (a) Admission fee: 282,000 yen (tentative) (b) Tuition: 267,900 yen for one semester (annual 535,800 yen) (tentative) Advancing students (a) Admission fee: None (students are expected to have completed the first two years of this Graduate School's doctoral program and as such will have already paid the admission fee ) (b) Tuition: 267,900 yen for one semester (annual 535,800 yen) (tentative) Note 1: The above amounts are tentative. In the case that admission or tuition fees are revised, the new fees will become applicable from the time of the revision. Note 2: Information on the waiving of admission or tuition fees, or permission to defer payment to a later date, etc., will be provided in the enrollment procedures documents sent after the results notification. 8. Eligibility for the Long Term Study Program Some applicants, due to the need to continue with employment or other special circumstances (Note 1), may request permission to follow a planned course of study longer than the normal period of three years in order to receive their degree (Note 2). This Graduate School offers such an option, called a Long Term Study Program, to those who qualify in an advance screening exam. Long term doctoral students pay the same amount over the length of their studies as those enrolled in the standard three-year program. 15 Applicants hoping to be considered for this program will be notified separately regarding the procedure for applying. Be sure to put a check mark in the appropriate place on the advancement/admission application form. Note that this program is applicable only from the beginning of doctoral studies, and cannot be entered into after studies have begun. Note 1: To be eligible for this program, the applicant who (1) is employed by a company or be self-employed, (2) needs maternity leave, or is engaged in child or family care, or (3) is otherwise determined by this Graduate School to be suitable for the program (excluding financial reasons). * In principle, this program is limited to students in the Special Selection Program for Working Adults. Persons in other Special Selection programs wishing to be considered may, however, request an examination in advance with the Graduate Academic Affairs Section, Graduate School of Engineering. Note 2: The period of study may not be extended beyond six years, but it is possible to request that the allowed period be shortened. In principle, no special curriculum will be prepared for students in the long term study program. 9. Handling of Personal Information (1) The Graduate School of Engineering of Tohoku University handles personal information in strict compliance with regulations such as the Act on the Protection of Personal Information Held by Incorporated Administrative Agencies and the National University Corporation Tohoku University - Policy on the Protection of Personal Information, taking every precaution to protect personal information. (2) Examination results and other personal information obtained in the application process will be used for selection of students for admission, enrollment procedures, follow-up surveys, student support after enrollment (e.g., scholarships, tuition waiver, health care), student guidance and other academic purposes, as well as in collection of tuition fees, etc. (3) After enrollment, the Graduate School may outsource administrative work in educational affairs to third-party companies and provide them, as necessary, with some or all of the student's personal information, in compliance with the National University Corporation Tohoku University - Policy on the Protection of Personal Information Important Notes (1) Applications by post are to be sent in the designated envelope as Registered Express mail. Applicants who live outside Japan may use any envelope. Applicants will not be automatically notified of the receipt of applications.
