1 Job Description for Classification: Reports to: Exempt Rhetoric School Headmaster Date: June 13, 2016 Purpose The purpose of this position is to provide leadership for the school s academic and college guidance program for Rhetoric School students. Summary The will serve as the primary point-of-contact for Rhetoric students as they plan, prepare for, and apply to college. This includes working with the students before and during the college and financial aid application process. Duties include supervising and coordinating test prep and test administration for college pre-admission testing; offering academic and career counseling; advising students on college programs and application processes; providing administrative leadership for recordkeeping and reporting; and supporting the Headmasters of Logic and Rhetoric Schools in the admission process of prospective students. Supervision Received and Exercised The receives direction from the Rhetoric School Headmaster and occasionally from the Head of School. The must exercise judgment that is in keeping with the school s philosophy of education, beliefs and values. The Rhetoric School Headmaster or designee will offer instruction, advice, direction and mentoring, when needed. Work Schedule This is a 30 hour-per-week, exempt, year-round position. In general, the workday is 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., five days a week. There will be occasions when the employee will be required to work after the regular school day. During the summer months, the workday may be reduced to 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday as the workload allows. There is a mandatory staff meeting once per week. Exceptions are when the school is closed for designated holiday breaks. 2 Spiritual Leadership Study the Bible, God s only written Word Skillfully articulate the personal/ethical implications of a lifelong faith commitment Measure knowledge against the standard of God s revealed truth in Scripture Actively participate in the explicitly religious components of the student and community programs Demonstrate an overt commitment to the life of a church and its core traditions Respect the school s Christian mission and values, and aid students in Christian formation by exemplifying Christian living Perform duties as a minister and steward of the Christian faith These job functions are performed concurrently with those listed below. Administrative Leadership Have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the culture, philosophy, and objectives of the school Plan and maintain a counseling program calendar integrated with the school calendar Produce and maintain the Geneva School Profile to reflect current student and school records Maintain records to document interactions, interventions, and decisions clearly Follow professional and ethical guidelines Establish and maintain good rapport and communication with BISD counselors and peers at sister schools Keep the Head of Rhetoric School informed on the issues, needs, and operation of the counseling program 10% Academic Advising Conduct career/interest/talents workshops/seminars using approved materials Administer interest surveys and questionnaires to assist in career education Facilitate record keeping of extra-curricular activities In conjunction with the Senior Year Director, coordinate graduation process, including ordering of senior rings, graduation gowns, invitations, etc. Advise students regarding class selection and course load based on college admissions desires and career goals Consult with teachers and parents regarding individual student academic, social, and behavior needs Provide teachers and parents with suggestions to aid student academic, social, and behavioral success 25% Page 2 of /22/2016

3 College Advising Represent students and the school in ongoing relationships with college admissions officers Conduct regular college guidance meetings for parents and students Assure quality of college applications, including the preparation of resumes, essays, recommendations, transcripts and school profile Notify students of potential scholarships Provide resource materials regarding career explorations materials, colleges, course majors, etc. Coordinate college visits, tours and visits from college representatives Observe deadlines for processes and procedures Assist Academic Dean with the input, maintenance, and distribution of student transcripts as official records Maintain database tracking college acceptances and college scholarships awarded annually 50% Testing Supervise test prep for PSAT, PLAN and SAT through appropriate faculty members, student seminars and study materials from testing agencies Coordinate testing, ordering materials and scheduling test administration staff and locations for AP, PSAT, PLAN and SAT Direct and monitor students registration and test results for SAT and ACT Supervise storage of all testing materials and student testing results Collect and maintain files of counseling resources including Duke TIP, College Board data, SAT and PLAN evaluation materials 10% Admissions Assist Heads of Logic and Rhetoric Schools in evaluation of transcripts, documentation and courses taken by prospective students and in developing plan for successful transition to Geneva Assist in assessing and evaluating new student s academic and social behavior as to the effect that it may have on a successful transition to Geneva Assist Heads of Logic and Rhetoric Schools in meetings with prospective students parents in support of the curriculum, mission, and culture of the school, helping to communicate to parents all necessary transitions needed for admission and success at Geneva Assist with the orientation for students in Logic and Rhetoric Schools 5% Page 3 of /22/2016

4 Professionalism Demonstrate commitment and loyalty to the school and its mission through speech, punctuality, dress, attitude, and attention to duties Present a consistent and reliable demeanor in interactions with others Accept constructive feedback to affect personal and professional growth Develop and maintain professional competence and continuous improvement through active participation in professional development activities and/or professional organizations As required, maintain licenses, certifications and accreditations Know and understand safety procedures including training in first aid and CPR Perform other duties as assigned These job functions are performed concurrently with those listed above. Essential Requirements A disciple of Jesus Christ and as such, one who models a love for God through obedience to His Word; such obedience is evidenced through convictions, lifestyle and worldview A full and unreserved supporter of the school s Statement of Faith Strong interpersonal skills, with a genuine interest in working with people An invested interest and desire to do right by students and their families regarding the oftenintimidating college eligibility and admissions process Experience in academic and college advising Bachelor s degree Required Abilities Exhibit consistent spiritual maturity Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing Exercise wisdom, diplomacy and integrity while maintaining a high level of professionalism Maintain highest level of confidentiality in all matters relating to students, families and fellow employees Meet pre-set deadlines with high degree of accuracy Work effectively with a service-oriented attitude in a busy office setting subject to frequent interruptions Take independent action where required and handle unique problems Understand, interpret and apply Geneva School policies, procedures, and regulations affecting school operations and programs Make decisions in emergency situations with or without the input of the Head of School Know and understand safety procedures including training in first aid and CPR Required Technical Abilities Proficient in MS Office suite and Outlook Type at a speed necessary for successful job performance Preferred Experience and Abilities A degree in counseling Licensed Professional Counselor Knowledge of and experience with the philosophy of classical Christian education Page 4 of /22/2016
