2 1. Call to Order Diego Tibaquira, outgoing CASSC Chair, called the meeting to order. 2. Introductions Diego Tibaquira, outgoing CASSC Chair, welcomed new and returning CASSC council members to the first meeting of the academic year. MDC 3 Updates Pamela Menke invited Lenore Rodicio to the podium to provide MDC 3 updates to the College CASSC council. Lenore thanked everyone who has been involved in the implementation process. A mandatory orientation for first time college direct-entry students have been instituted. More than 7,800 students were registered for fall at all campuses. Test-prep courses were developed and instituted to help high school students prepare to take the PERT exam. More than 1,300 students participated in these test- prep courses reading, writing and math to help them improve their PERT scores and place at higher level on those subjects. Disciplines will be holding meetings throughout the semester. 4. Comments by College Provost or Vice Provost, Education Enrollment Dr. Menke provided an update on enrollment for this semester and pointed out that enrollment was down only slightly. New District Personnel Dr. Menke announced that the following new district personnel have started their assignment at MDC: 2

3 Dr. Alanka Brown, Director, Academic Readiness, Student Achievement Initiatives Barika Barboza, Sr. Trainer, Learning Outcomes, College Training & Development (CT&D) Dr. Juan Blanco, Executive Director, Center for Latin American and Caribbean Initiatives, Office of the College Provost Ramon Millan Pineda, VP/CIO, Information Technology SACS The College is on the eve of its 10 th year Reaffirmation of Accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) is a key element to this process. The QEP is a focused five-year datadriven project (beginning in Spring 2015) that promises to improve student learning, either through the literal hands-on improvement of student learning or improving the environment in which students learn. A QEP topic selection leadership committee has been appointed and charged to oversee the process of selecting a topic of research. The MDC QEP must be connected, in some way, to the College s Strategic Plan. It is also closely aligned as a next step and evaluation of the MDC Student Achievement initiatives. General Education Steering Committee (House Bill 1735) July 2012 legislation requires the Florida College System (FCS) and the State University System (SUS) to establish a general education 30 credit hours. Fifteen of those hours consist of 5 courses each in the disciplines of Communication, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and the Humanities. The 5 courses per discipline will established by a State-wide General Education Committee consisting of 5 FCS academic officers and 5 SUS academic officers. The Steering Committee will work closely with new State-wide faculty discipline committees comprised of an equal number of FCS and SUS faculty in the relevant discipline. Each FCS and SUS institution nominated one faculty member in each of the five disciplines. The General Educating Steering Committee has recommended the final appointments to the Chancellors of the two systems. The Steering Committee is scheduled to meet on September 17, 2012 in Orlando, FL. The recommendations for the faculty discipline committee members will be made at that time. The new, 15 credit hour common General Education Core and the new, 15 credit hour institutional General Education options will be implemented for students entering fall Approval of the July 10, 2012 CASSC Minutes The minutes of the July 10, 2012 CASSC Meeting were approved as submitted. 6. CASSC Chair and Coordinating Committee Elections An electronic memo was distributed to the CASSC members requesting nominations or selfnominations be submitted for the CASSC Chair, the Coordinating Committee faculty representative, and the Coordinating Committee staff representative for a one-year term of service. Henri Roberts will be sending the CASSC membership an electronic ballot which includes the names of those nominated by on September 12,

Announcements Rally to Vote Lourdes Perez, Dean, Students at the InterAmerican Campus, invited council members to participate in the Rally to Vote: Make Democracy Count scheduled to take place at the Wolfson Campus on Monday, September 17, Each campus will provide buses to transport students, faculty and staff to arrive at the Wolfson Campus by noon for the main rally. Caring for Kids Fair Lourdes Perez also invited CASSC members to participate in the 6 th Annual Caring for Kids Fair sponsored by Connectfamilias on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at the InterAmerican Campus. Free health screenings for children, connect to community agencies and services, and free 4

5 games, giveaways, food, prized and entertainment will be provided. The fair will be from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Kendall Campus Vicky Owles, Dean, Students at the Kendall Campus, invited council members to attend an exhibition baseball game between the Israeli National team and the MDC baseball team at 3:00 p.m. and at 7:00 p.m. the MDC women s volleyball team will be playing at the gymnasium. Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Jorge Salinas announced that the Kendall Campus Wellness Center is organizing a team for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at the Bayfront Park, Downtown, Miami. Mini-Term Ana Maria Bradley-Hess, Dean, Academic & Students at the Hialeah Campus, asked CASSC members to encourage students who have not been able to register or those who wish to add an additional class, to register for the mini-semester starting in October 1, Next CASSC Meeting will be on Tuesday, October 9, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. Wolfson Campus, room The meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m. 5
