The University serves as an intellectual catalyst for economic, social and cultural transformation on a global, national, and regional scale. Established in 1895, UMass Dartmouth has developed from its textile roots into a comprehensive research university that offers an array of highly regarded programs in the liberal arts and sciences, marine sciences, engineering, business and the visual and performing arts. UMass Dartmouth is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the top public regional university in New England. UMass Dartmouth is the only research university in the state south of Boston and recently achieved a major milestone in being designated as a Carnegie Doctoral Research University. In addition, the University is classified as a Carnegie community engaged university. Its commitment to community service and service learning is embedded throughout all of the academic programs, earning its placement among the top 15 institutions for two years in The (U.S.) President s National Community Service Honor Roll. The UMass School of Law is the Commonwealth's only public law school. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth provides an intimate learning environment for more than 9,000 highly qualified students who pursue majors in more than 50 baccalaureates and 38 graduate programs, including 12 at the doctoral level. Located in the heart of the picturesque South Coast region near Cape Cod, Providence and Boston, this comprehensive public institution has been a thriving component of the five-campus UMass system since 1991.
8 Institutional Governance and Structure UMass Dartmouth is one of five campuses of the University of Massachusetts System, which is governed by a 22- member Board of Trustees with headquarters in Boston. On July 1, 2017, Dr. Robert Johnson became Chancellor at UMass Dartmouth. Chancellor Johnson is supported in his work by Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs Mohammad Karim. The balance of the senior leadership team includes: James Sheehan, Vice Chancellor of Administration and Fiscal Services; Renee Buisson, Vice Chancellor for Marketing; and John Hoey, Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs. The Campus Internationally renowned Modernist architect and then Dean of Yale s school of Art and Architecture, Paul Rudolph, designed the dramatic UMass Dartmouth s 710-acre main campus. Rudolph made both the exterior and interior of each building of rough concrete (béton brut), an essential element of the style known as Brutalism, and he endowed buildings with large windows, with the intended effect of giving those inside the feeling of being connected to the outdoors. Rudolph understood that concrete needed to be set off by bright colors and chose to implement bold oranges, reds and purples throughout hanging textiles, furniture and carpeting. Atriums give people a place to gather between classrooms and halls. Large mounds of earth (berms) stand between the parking lots, making the lots partially invisible from within the Academic Life area. More recent buildings and remodeling, most notably the Charlton College of Business, Library, and residence halls, have been built to complement, Rudolph's Modernist aesthetic. We anticipate that the new Engineering Dean will be actively involved in a new STEM lab/maker Space learning addition. Outdoors, the university is fortunate to have large areas of undeveloped green space, including extensive wooded areas, wetlands, and ponds uncommon to many university campuses. Numerous footpaths make exploring these natural areas of the campus an enjoyable activity for students, faculty, and visitors alike About the town of Dartmouth UMass Dartmouth is in the seaside town of Dartmouth in Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States established in With a population of approximately 35,000, it is the third largest town by land-area in Massachusetts. UMass Dartmouth enjoys a friendly and collaborative relationship with the town.
9 Dartmouth is located 56 miles south of Boston, 27 miles east of Providence, Rhode Island and 30 miles west of Cape Cod. Trains servicing the east coast connect in Boston and Providence. The T. F. Green Airport in Warwick, Rhode Island and Boston s Logan International Airport provide convenient options for travel throughout the U.S. and internationally.
