Student Openings Division of : Several Science of : Several Clinical Psychology: Several 2. Application Qualifications Applicants must meet one of the following criteria, have a nationality other than Japanese, and have graduated from a high school (or equivalent educational institution) outside Japan. (1) Individuals who have graduated or expect to graduate from a university by March 2018 (2) Individuals who have been awarded a bachelor s degree by the National Institution for Academic Degree and University Evaluation or who expect to be awarded such a degree by March 2018 (3) Individuals who have completed or expect to complete 16 years of school education, mainly in a foreign country by March 2017 (4) Individuals who have completed or expect to complete 16 years of school education of a foreign country in Japan by taking a correspondence course offered by a foreign school by March 2018 (5) Individuals who have completed (or expect to complete by March 2018) a foreign university s coursework at an educational institution in Japan that is positioned within the school education system of that foreign country as an educational body with a university course. (The completion of the coursework has to be considered equivalent to the completion of 16 years of school education in that foreign country. In addition, the educational institution is required to be designated by the Japanese Minister of, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.) (6) Individuals who have been awarded a degree equivalent to a bachelor s degree by completing (or who expect to complete by March 2018) three years or more of coursework at a foreign university or other foreign educational institution. (The university or institution must be approved by a certified official of the government or the relevant institution in that foreign country for its comprehensive educational and research conditions, or its equivalent as determined by the Japanese Minister of, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.) This includes completing the coursework by taking a correspondence course through a foreign educational institution in Japan or completing the coursework at an educational institution that is positioned within the school education system of that foreign country and is determined as in the section immediately above.) (7) Individuals who have completed (or expect to complete by March 2018) a specialized course of a specialized training college on or after the date determined by the Japanese Minister of, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. (The course is required to be designated by the Minister, and the course term needs to be of a length of four years or more. [Also, the course has to meet other standards established by the Minister.]) (8) Individuals designated by the Minister of, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (1953 Notice No. 5, Ministry of, Science and Culture) Examples: Those who graduated (or expect to graduate by March 2018) from a university designated by the old University Ordinance or from a post-secondary educational institution designated by the laws on establishment/orders for organization of ministries and agencies (9) Individuals who have attended a university for three years or more as of March 2018 or individuals to whom one of the following applies: Those who have completed (or expect to complete by March 2018) 15 years of school education in a foreign country

2 Those who have completed (or expect to complete by March 2017) 15 years of school education of a foreign country by taking a correspondence course in Japan offered by a school of that foreign country Those who have completed (or expect to complete by March 2017) a foreign university s coursework at an educational institution in Japan that is positioned within the school education system of that foreign country as an educational body with a university course. (The completion of the coursework needs to be considered equivalent to the completion of 15 years of school education in that foreign country. In addition, the educational institution is required to be designated by the Japanese Minister of, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.) Note that all individuals who apply under this qualification need to be deemed by this graduate school to have achieved excellent grades in the prescribed subjects (10) Applicants who are recognized by this graduate school as possessing the equivalent or greater academic skill than that of a university graduate based on a preliminary review of application qualifications and who are 22 years of age or older as of March 31, 2018 (including those who were born on April 1,1996) Note: Those without a university graduate qualification (e.g., junior college graduates, college of technology graduates, graduates of other miscellaneous schools) may apply under this qualification. 3. Preliminary Review of Application Qualifications Individuals applying under qualifications (4), (5), (6), (7), (9) and (10) must undergo a preliminary review of application qualifications, in accordance with the attached Guidelines for the Preliminary Review of Application Qualifications. 4. Application Period January 5 (Fri.) through 11 (Thu.), 2018 (Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) Note: If you send your application by mail, it must be received by the office during this application period. 5. Application Materials (1) Admission application, examination admission card, and examinee photo card (affix a photo of yourself taken within the last three months to each form) (2) Certificate of graduation (or expected graduation) or copy of the diploma (3) Transcript (4) Examination fee: 30,000 (a) On the attached payment slip, carefully write your name (in kanji and furigana), address, and telephone number with a black ballpoint pen in the sections marked with a symbol ( ). When you are done, take it to a bank (including Japan Post Bank) to make your payment. Note: Payments cannot be made at ATMs. (b) After payment is made at the bank, you will receive a validated portion that comprises a payment receipt (the section marked 振替払込請求書兼受領書 ) and examination fee payment certificate (the section marked 検定料受付証明書 ). Be sure to check that these two sections are stamped with the payment date. Applications with an exam fee payment certificate that is not date-stamped cannot be processed. (c) Affix the date-stamped examination fee payment certificate to the designated section of the examination fee payment certificate submission form, and submit it. (d) Both the payment receipt and the examination fee payment certificate are very important documents. Please be careful not to lose them. Note: Once the examination fee is paid, it will not be refunded, except in the following situations:

(6) A self-addressed stamped envelope measuring 23.5 cm 12.0 cm with 362 in postage (to be used for mailing the announcement of exam results by expedited mail). (7) Research summary: Provide 10 copies of a document summarizing your research topic (research objective and what you expect to reveal through the research), history behind the selection of your research topic (reason and background to selecting the topic, trends of related research, status of research you have carried out), research target and method (what exactly will be the target of your research and how you will conduct your research) and references. Format: Should be created using a computer and be up to five pages in length (including diagrams and tables; a document exceeding five pages will not be accepted). Each page is to contain up to 30 rows of 40 characters each and the paper size should be A4 (portrait oriented). Attach a cover indicating your name and research topic. 6. Application Procedures Applicants should collect the materials listed in section 5 and submit them to the graduate school during the application period. If sending your application by mail, be sure to write Graduate School Admission Application Enclosed on the envelope in red ink and send it via simplified registered mail. 7. Application Selection Method Applicants are selected based on written exam results, interviews, etc. 8. Examination Schedule, Subjects, and Locations Written Exam February 6 (Tue.), :30 to 11 a.m.: Foreign Language The test will be in either Japanese (must be answered in Japanese) or English (required to answer in Japanese). Applicants whose native language is English must select Japanese as their foreign language. 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.: Specialized Subjects (must be answered in Japanese) (1) Foreign-language exam Japanese exam Materials you can use during the exam: Two printed dictionaries (one Japanese-native language dictionary and one native language-japanese dictionary) (Japanese-Japanese dictionaries or electronic dictionaries are not allowed) If you have a JLPT score: Applicants who have passed N1 of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), sponsored by the Japan Foundation and Japan al Exchanges and Services, between October 2015 and the time of their application may, upon request, have their performances on the JLPT considered during the selection process along with their results of the Japanese exam administered by the Graduate School. (Submit either your Certificate of Result and Scores or a copy of your score report.) English exam Materials you can use during the exam:

4 Printed dictionaries (one English-native language dictionary, one native language-english dictionary, one Japanese-native language dictionary and one native language Japanese dictionary) (Japanese-Japanese dictionaries or electronic dictionaries are not allowed) If you have TOEFL/TOEIC scores: Applicants who have earned a TOEFL-PBT score of 550 or higher, a TOEFL-CBT score of 210 or higher, a TOEFL-iBT score of 80 or higher, or a TOEIC score of 660 or higher between October 2015 and the time of their application may, upon request, have their performance on these exams considered during the selection process along with their results of the English exam administered by the graduate school. (Submit either your examination certificate or a copy of your examination results; multiple exam results may be submitted). 2. Specialized subject exam Materials you can use during the exam: Two printed dictionaries (one Japanese-native language dictionary and one native language-japanese dictionary) (Japanese-Japanese dictionaries or electronic dictionaries are not allowed) Applicants must select one of the specialized subjects that correspond to the field your desired academic advisor specializes in (see the list of academic advisors and their research fields on page 15) and must indicate that subject in the designated section of the admission application. Interview February 7 (Wed.), 2018, from 9 a.m. The interview will be conducted in Japanese and be based on the applicant s research summary. The applicant should bring another copy of his/her research summary for his/her own reference to the interview. Note: Only applicants whose written exam scores reach the designated level can receive an interview. The examination admission number of those applicants who are selected to be interviewed will be posted in the entryway of the Graduate School at 8:30 a.m. on the day of the interview. Announcement of Those Who Passed the Exam Results will be posted on the Graduate School bulletin board at 9 a.m. on February 13 (Tue.), In addition, all applicants will be notified of their results individually. Note: Information about whether an applicant has passed or failed the exam will not be provided over the phone. 10. Handling of Personal Information (1) All personal information collected by Hokkaido University will be completely protected in compliance with the Act on the Protection of Personal Information Held by Independent Administrative Agencies, etc., and other related acts and pursuant to the Hokkaido University Regulations on Personal Information Management. (2) Names, addresses, and other personal information written on application documents will be used solely for (a) enrollee selection, (b) the announcement of exam results, (c) admission procedures, (d) surveys and research on enrollee selection methods, and (e) related processes. (3) Personal information written on application documents will be used only for those who are admitted for (a) school administration purposes (student registration, academic counseling, etc.), (b) student support services (health management, scholarship applications, etc.), and (c) tuition and other administrative purposes.

5 (4) Of the personal information described in item (3) above, only names and addresses will be used to facilitate communication with students from the Hokkaido University Frontier Foundation and organizations related to Hokkaido University, such as (a) the Hokkaido University Athletic Union, (b) Hokkaido University Clark Memorial Foundation, and (c) Alumni Association of the Hokkaido University Faculty of Economics and Business Administration. 11. Other (1) Enrollment Fee and Tuition Enrollment fee: 282,000 (tentative) First semester tuition for FY2018: 267,900 (annual amount: 535,800) (tentative) The above amounts are estimates. If these figures are revised at the time of admission or during enrollment, the new amount will apply as of the time of revision. (2) The issuance of your examination admission card indicates the receipt of your application. (3) Applicants who require special arrangements when taking the entrance exam or attending classes due to physical disability should inform the graduate school of their situation before applying. (4) When mailing an inquiry regarding application qualifications, the entrance exam, or other matters to the Graduate School, be sure to include a self-addressed stamped envelope measuring 23.5 cm 12.0 cm (with 82 in postage) to be used for mailing a response from the Graduate School. (5) When requesting documents for application from the Graduate School, be sure to include a self-addressed stamped envelope measuring 24.1 cm 33.1 cm (with 250 in postage) to be used for mailing a response from the Graduate School. (6) Exam questions that appeared in last year s written exam can be found on the university s website ( If you do not have Internet access, you can request this information via mail. Be sure to write Request for Last Year s International Student Entrance Exam Questions on the envelope in red ink and include a self-addressed stamped envelope measuring 24.1 cm 33.1 cm (with 140 in postage) to be used for mailing a response from the Graduate School. 6 2018 Academic Year Enrollment (Secondary Call) Hokkaido University Graduate School of Master s Course Guidelines for the Preliminary Review of Application Qualifications (For ordinary students, international students, and working adults) Those applying for the Hokkaido University Graduate School of master s course for the 2018 academic year under the following qualifications in the application guidelines are subject to a preliminary review of application qualifications. However, those who have undergone a preliminary review of application qualifications by the graduate school before should inform our educational affairs coordinator of that fact in advance. Provide a statement explaining the research and activities you have conducted thus far that have inspired your desire to apply for admission to the graduate school. Free form using an A4 size sheet of paper, up to 2,000 characters. If you have any of these items, you may submit them as part of your application (up to two items). If you have any proof of your English-language skills, such as your score on the TOEIC or other similar exam, you may submit it as part of your application. International students applying for entrance examinations may submit proof of Japanese-language skills as well

7 Note: Materials (e) to (g) above should be submitted only by applicants applying based on qualification (10). 3. Method of Conducting the Preliminary Review of Application Qualifications A preliminary review of application qualifications is conducted using the submitted materials. However, some applicants applying based on qualification (10) may have to take an English/Japanese exam, if deemed necessary. 4. English/Japanese Exam December 8 (Fri.), 2017, 3:30 p.m. 5. Results of the Preliminary Review of Application Qualifications Applicants will be notified of the results of the preliminary review of application qualifications via postal mail. Inquiries regarding results will not be discussed by telephone. 7. Other Application materials may not be revised once they have been submitted. Also, submitted materials will not be returned. 8. Taking the Master s Course Admissions Exam Individuals deemed qualified to apply based on this review can take the master s course admissions exam to be administered on February 6 (Tue.) and 7 (Wed.), Those planning to take the exam should pay the exam fee of 30,000 via bank transfer at a post office or bank, and then submit the following documents to the graduate school between January 5 (Fri.) and 11 (Thu.), 2018: Validated portion titled 検定料受付証明書 of the payment slip (must be date-stamped), examination admission card, examinee photo card, contact information stickers, two return envelopes, and the research summary.
