INTRODUCTION Shrewsbury School is an independent boarding school, committed to the highest standards of education, and with a national and international reputation for breadth, depth and quality of achievement. Founded in 1552, the School stands on an extensive site in the Kingsland district of Shrewsbury, looking over the River Severn to the old part of the town. There are currently 800 pupils in the School, of whom 80% are boarders. September 2008 saw the introduction of co-education in the Sixth Form, and in September 2014 the school moved to full co-education, with currently 32% of pupils being girls. The School has approximately 350 employees and an annual turnover of over 25,000,000. The Bursar is responsible to the Headmaster and the Governing Body for the overall financial management of the School and its resources in order that the School s objectives can be met.

2 The Admissions & Marketing Department is responsible for recruiting approximately 220 new pupils into the school each year as well as promoting and marketing the school to a wide range of constituents. The Director of Admissions is in charge of the department, and two other teaching staff act as Admissions Tutors. The Admissions Manager oversees the routine running of the Admissions Office. The Marketing Manager is in charge of the school s marketing on a day to day basis, and will work closely alongside the Website and PR Manager. There are two further administrative assistants in the Admissions & Marketing Department. 2. MAIN PURPOSE OF ROLE The Marketing Manager will contribute to the School s aims and objectives by providing support to the Director of Admissions in his role of promoting and marketing the school to a wide range of constituents. The Marketing Manager is in charge of the school s marketing on a day to day basis, and will act as a key contact for all marketing/communications enquiries from parents, staff, friends of Shrewsbury School and external companies and individuals. 3. LEVEL OF POSITION The Marketing Manager will be directly responsible to the Director of Admissions who is responsible for day-to-day Line Management, appraisal, training and development and health and safety. 4. THE PROFILE The Marketing Manager must be able to show flexibility within this role and above all must be reliable and trustworthy. The Marketing Manager must be able to communicate effectively with a variety of people, and must be able to demonstrate the ability to use a variety of computer packages (including desktop publishing, spreadsheets and word processing). 5. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES The duties and responsibilities below are illustrative duties. The position holder will be expected to become involved in a range of work, on occasions that may not be illustrated below. Main Responsibilities: Marketing and Advertising To be a member of the School s Marketing Committee, chaired by the Headmaster, which identifies the school s strategic marketing objectives and produces strategic marketing plans. To deliver the strategic marketing plans devised by the Marketing Committee. To devise and deliver the School s advertising campaign in accordance with the marketing objectives. This includes national and regional advertising, and publicity within feeder schools. To manage the School s social media communications, and in association with the School s Website Manager to operate the school s Twitter account. To manage the school s Press and PR relations, and to play a major role alongside the Website Manager in press liaison in case of emergencies. To work closely alongside the School s Website Manager and the School s Film Fellow in the production of material for a public audience.

3 To oversee the School s programme of photography, liaising with external photographers and colleagues on the school staff to ensure coverage of specific events and the development of a bank of photographs for promotional use. Publications and publicity material Alongside the Website Manager and other colleagues, to contribute to the design, writing and production of publications, flyers, and other marketing material. To oversee the production of annual marketing documentation (e.g. Annual Information booklet, Sixth Form Experience, etc.). To advise the Marketing Committee on issues relating to the updating of the School Prospectus and other material sent to prospective parents. Prep School Events To produce the annual Prep Schools Programme booklet, following discussion with members of staff who deliver specific events. To publicise prep school events to key feeder schools and ensure suitable numbers for all events. To communicate with prep schools before and after events. To liaise with colleagues to ensure the smooth running of events and to maximise their marketing impact. To co-ordinate promotional material for participants to take away at the end of events. To maintain the database of prep school contacts to ensure a co-ordinated approach to liaison with key prep schools Management of Other Events To be in charge of the school s five annual Open Days, communicating with prospective parents and organising all aspects of the programme. To be in charge of the annual Shrewsbury Sunday event, which is the taster day for the families of the following year s entrants. To work alongside the Events Manager in delivering marketing receptions following major school events away from Shrewsbury (e.g. concerts, plays) Administration To assist with the preparation and monitoring of the annual Marketing budgets. To maintain inventory of marketing publications, promotional goods, and office materials and replenish stocks when necessary. General To act as a key contact for all marketing enquiries from parents, staff, friends of Shrewsbury School and external companies and individuals. To work closely alongside the Director of Admissions and other members of the Admissions & Marketing team, contributing pro-actively to the overall performance of the Admissions & Marketing Department To identify and develop relationships with vendors, suppliers and all Salopian constituents. To support colleagues in other departments with general and specific marketing requirements and ensuring a consistent approach to marketing is adopted.

4 To manage own time, meet deadlines and work flexibly and under pressure when required. To be aware of and ensure that the protocols relating to Data Protection, Child Protection and confidentiality are complied with at all times. To undertake personal health and safety duties as detailed in the Health and Safety policy. To undertake other such duties, which are reasonably required, up to the general level of responsibility of this position, and become involved in a range of work within the team to ensure the Admissions & Marketing Department meets all major, strategic deadlines. Contacts In all contacts the Marketing Manager will be required to present a good image of Shrewsbury School as well as maintain constructive relationships. 6. TERMS AND CONDITIONS SALARY: Salary according to experience. HOURS: The Marketing Manager s position is a full-time role working during termtime and during school holidays. Normal office hours are 09:00 hours to 17:00 hours, Monday to Friday, with a lunch break of one hour each day. Shrewsbury School is a boarding school and therefore operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during termtime. Flexibility will be needed / expected to meet the demands of the School. There will be occasions when there is a requirement to work during the evenings and/or weekends to meet the operational needs of the School. You will receive TOIL (time off in lieu) for the hours worked. HOLIDAYS: The Marketing Manager will be entitled to 28 days holiday per annum plus Statutory Bank Holidays. (Please note that it will be necessary to work on Public Holidays which fall within term-time). SICKNESS: The Marketing Manager will be entitled to 6 weeks at full pay, followed by 6 weeks at half pay. PENSION: All support employees are eligible to join Shrewsbury School s Pension Scheme (employee 5%, employer 7.5%). OTHER BENEFITS: All employees may enjoy the benefits of a free lunch in KH when the kitchens are in operation, together with the use of the school s sports facilities when not in use by pupils.

A / D WORK EXPERIENCE At least 3 years of working in a marketing role ideally in a similar environment. Experience of brand development and management. Experience of developing and delivering marketing plans and campaigns that increase awareness and engagement. Knowledge of managing and organising corporate events, conferences etc. A strong understanding of using social media with experience of managing and developing relationships with the media. First class written and oral communication at all levels including excellent presentation and negotiating skills. Experience of working with advertisers to maximise the commercial opportunities of an organisation. A / I A / I Experience of budget management. Experience of working closely with senior managers. Ability to channel and manage customer feedback effectively. Experience of working in an educational environment would be a distinct advantage.
