January and February 2016 Vice Chancellor s Message Dear Readers; Assalamo-Alaikum: I am pleased to share with you the latest issue of CITI-ZINE. I hope you will be updated about CUSIT. Pakistan and the whole region of South Asia is faced with multitude of Challenges inculding poverty, illiteracy, terrorism, poor social infrastructure and above all low enrolment in Tertiary Education. The praticiaption of females in the higher education is even more frustrating in Pakistan in general and at KPK in particualr. This places our province at a very disadvantaged position, as more than 50% of our population is not able to take part in the socioeconomic development of the country. We have jointly started training and capacity building programs with Associated Business Education (ABE) UK in the areas of Healthcare Management, Human Reource Management, Hospitality Management, Business Management and accounting. At the same time, the existing departments, labs and library have been strengthend as per expectation and demands of varrious accreditation councils. Graduate programs in the areas of Engineering, Computer Science and IT, Management Sciences, Mathematics and Education have been startred and the students are developed to carryout quality research on the issues faced by society. The students of final semester are also given special coaching in the areas of Resume writing, intreview skills, presentation skills etc; so that they can project themselves as best candidates for various jobs in the markets. In this context, through City University Cosultancy Services and Research (CU-CSR) Centre Islamabad, the grduates are connected to the job market. The current research areas are explored to carryout innovative research to solve the contemporary problems. The weekend program has attracted good students and in Fall 2016, more programs are being launched, which will provide more opportunities to working class. Furthermore B. Archeticture and BS Computer Engineering programs are also being offered in Fall Let me assure you that the management, faculty and staff of CUSIT are endaevoring to develop conducive environement for learinng and research. 2 Green House Gas Emissions and Technologies for its Reduction This Seminar was held at Institute of Engineers at Islamabad on Sat 27 Feb The Seminar was attended by Mr.Jawed Ali Khan (TNA consultant World Bank) as chef guest and Prof. Dr.Attaullah Shah (VC of City University Peshawar as well Vice Chairman Civil IEP) presenting as speaker. This participation also includes various Engineers who appreciated the seminar. Lastly Mr.Hafiz Ehsan Qazi (Chairman IEP Engr.) gave the Souvenir to the speaker and appreciated the delegates. Official visit by The Jang Group and media Advisor Muhammad Asghar Chief Reporter APP, M.Obaid Abrar Khan, M.Atif and Mr. Javed Akhtar AIOU to the Vice Chancellor Prof.Dr.Attaullah Shah and Mr. Saqib Chohan at CUCSR Islamabad. Mr.Saqib brief on the roles and objectives of CUCSR whereas the VC of City Uni. shared his visions and highlighted that the City University will be in the list of Top 10 in next 5 years (Insha'Allah). Mandatory Certificate for Final Year Students 1. Mr. Ghulam Shabir conducted the training workshop for the final year students. Providing the correct guidelines and coaching them for their examination. Students are writing the notes which the lecturer is providing verbally. Lecturer is creating a friendly environment for the students so they learn and focus in comfort zone. As the lecturer is giving full attention to the students as for them to achieve the success in examinations. 2. Final year students are focusing on the guidelines provided by the lecturer as well as making their notes to prepare themselves for the exams. Group studying among themselves by helping each other and putting their effort to understand & learn. Training Work shop organized on Entrepreneurship by CU-CSR Islamabad CU-CSR Islamabad has successfully organized a 'Two Day Training Course, 23rd & 24th February, 2016 on "Entrepreneurship Management" at Islamabad. Various professionals, market stakeholders and young start-ups participated in this training course as trainee. The course covered important topic like entrepreneurial process, idea generation, exploiting opportunities, developing business feasibility and writing business proposal etc. The participants appreciated the hard work of CU-CSR team and the resource person. 3. 3 Vice Chancellor honored topping Students of CUSIT Position Holders Toppers of CUSIT 2015 CUSIT toppers from different programs and the respective HoDs were invited for the High-Tea organized by the Vice Chancellor. The toppers showed their satisfactory appreciation regards to the teaching, environment, tailored courses on Entrepreneurship and Career Counseling for final semester students at City University Peshawar. The Vice Chancellor appreciated and given them surety to facilitate with better education for their respective fields and mentioned that the great opportunities will be given for the graduates in an upcoming Job Fair in May/June The HoDs and faculty was advised to provide maximum opportunities to students for learning through study and industrial tours at least once in each academic year. 4 Signing of Accreditation Agreement between CUSIT and ABE-UK Signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by City University of Science & IT Peshawar with Association of Business Executives [ABE-UK] for jointly launching Capacity Building Programs. It was held on 25th Feb, 2016 at Serena Hotel Islamabad. Mr. Gareth Robinson CEO, ABE-UK and Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah Vice Chancellor City University Peshawar signed the agreement on the occasion. Mr. Gareth informed that ABE is not working on Profitable purposes but mainly focusing on the global recognition of education to the middle class students across the globe and the Vice Chancellor informed that City University has focused on high quality education in the Science, Technology and Social Sciences. Mr. Saqib Farooq Chohan Director and Team Leader City University Consultancy and Research Centre Islamabad also briefed about the role of the Centre in connecting of City University with industry and research as placement of the graduates. Mr. Usman Akram Regional Director South Asia ABE-UK and Mr. Muhammad Muddasser Arif Business Development & Marketing Manager CUCSR were also present at the occasion. The two institutions will collaborate for launching various diploma courses accredited by ABE- UK and HEC-Pakistan for different fields. Human Resource Management Business Management, Travel Tourism & Hospitality Management Financial Management Marketing Management and Entrepreneurship Orientation of Students of Civil Engineering Batch-II The Vice Chancellor of City University, teachs an Engineering Geology to the second batch of Civil Engineering students, with a detailed orientation session to the students in the first class. He presented a bouquet to Ms. Noor Aqsa who stood 1st position in the first semester. VC CUSIT emphasized on the Civil Engineering Program and committed to develop leaders who can play effective role in society to the development within the high ethical standards and Social commitment. 5 Nestle Healthy Kids Facility Inaugurated at Peshawar Model School IV The Corporate Manager Nestle appreciated the role of PMS and its faculty/students in coming forward to develop the facility at PMS, which is first of its kind at KPK. Mr. Saqib Chohan shared new initiatives of CU-CSR under more projects are explored for the students of PMS/PMDCs in collaboration with Nestle and other corporates. The principal of PMS-IV emphasized the need for clean and hygienic conditions for the kids and the efforts of PMS for the same. A wholesome personality of students require balanced life and equitable distribution of time in a day. The students may be encouraged to come forward in co-curricular activities. He thanked the management of School, principal and her team for a very colorful event. Later the Chief guest cut the ribbon of the room and cake with the young students and faculty. Students' Gala Day Celebrated at City University The students' entrepreneurship society arranged a gala day at the University and celebrated BASANT ( KITING DAY) at the Campus. Many Stalls of different commodities and entertainments were arranged by students. VC City University visited various stalls and took keen interest in these. He purchased some items from students entrepreneurs, aswell advised them to prepare business feasibility next time which should help them to cover the marketing, financial, HR and technical feasibilities, this will guide them to learn the art of Entrepreneurship in true spirit. MS Software Engineering Thesis Deafened by Mr. Sohail Zafar Mr. Sohail Zafar of Computer Scinece department defended his MS Computer Engineering Thesis. Dr. Furqan aziz and Dr. Maqsood were the external evaluators. Head of Department Dr. Ghufranullah and Controller of Exams Mr. Zafar Ahemd as well other faculty members were also present. The title of MS thesis was Offline Signature Ahmed. The external evaluators took keen interest in the research of the scholar and appreciated his innovative ideas. CUSIT team of Students grabbed prize for the short documentary at FiLUMS The students of Entrepreneurship Society CUSIT joined the Film Festival at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) Lahore. They grabbed prize on preparation of short documentary. The Management, faculty, staff and students of CUSIT congratulate the TEAM CUSIT for their outstanding performance. Mr. M.Tahir Ch. 7 One Day Seminar on Past Present and Future of Science One Day Seminar on Past Present and Future of Science" was held at Pakistan Academy of Science Islamabad on Feb 17,2015. Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah represented City University and Engineering Scientists at the Seminar. Prof. Dr. Zabta Khan Sec. Gen. PAS was the host of the event, Dr. Abdul Qadir Pakistan leading nuclear scientist was the Chief guest. The event which was represented by three generations of Scientists and the Nominee of the Pakistan Alkhwarzmi Award by Turkish Govt. The senior scientists including Dr. M.D.Shami, Dr. Anwar, Dr.Gilani, Porf. Dr. Qasim Jan, Prof. Dr. Miana Prof. Dr. Khalid etc. represented the first generation scientists. Whereas Prof. Attaullah Shah, Dr. Saud (UHS), Dr. Fida ( GIK) and others represented the second generation scientists and the young students of QAU, FJWU, AAUR, GIK and Siddique public school represented the young scientists. Dr. Shinwari shared the future of genetic Engineering and biotechnology with audience. The veteran scientists shared the stories of their hard work commitment and dedication with the audience in the embryonic stage of Pakistan. VC City University answered questions of young scientists on the role of accreditation councils in quality assurance of higher education. In his concluding remarks Dr. Abdul Qadir Khan emphasized over the balanced personality and advised the students to actively involve in sports and other co-curricular activities. He also shared his feelings of better and prosperous Pakistan in the hands of upcoming young scientists,by stressing on utilizing the knowledge and research for the welfare & development of the societies. One Day Workshop on Developing Industry Academia Linkages held One Day Workshop on How to Improve Entrepreneurship Development & Industry was arranged at City University Peshawar for faculty on Feb 18,2016. CEO Pakistan Entrepreneurship Institute was the resource person. The event was managed in collaboration with City University Consultancy Services and Research ( CU-CSR) Islamabad. In opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah highlighted on the importance of capacity building of the faculty in creating quality graduates of entrepreneurial mind. He shared the examples of prominent institutions like FAST, NUST, LUMS and GIK for developing graduates to play leading role in the society by creating their own enterprises. He also thanked the resource person and solicited his support for connecting the University with Industry and providing references for Corporate Advisory Council of City University. Three sessions of workshop covered diversified areas of Entrepreneurship and Industry Academic linkages. The workshop was participated by Dean of Research and Innovation/Dir ORIC Prof. Dr. A.F. Chishti, Mr. Saqib Chohan from CU-CSR, Registrar Amjad Ali and more than 25 faculty members. The participants appreciated the contents of the workshop and endeavors of City University for capacity building of its students and faculty. 8 Academic and Curriculum Planning Conference for 2016 held at CUSIT The first ever academic and curriculum Conference was held at City University which was attended by all Heads of Departments and section heads. The conference highlighted the academic and research targets of the Spring 2016 and Fall All heads of department gave a detailed presentation about the proposed courses, faculty, labs and other resources for the academic year The Director ORIC/ Dean Research Prof. Dr. Anwar Fazil Chishti gave a detailed review of various initiatives under ORIC. Director QEC Prof. Dr. Jehanzeb provided a details of various initiatives and targets of QEC for the year The details of new programs and requisite resource were also discussed. The VC CUSIT, Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah informed the HODs that monitoring and evaluation is a continuous process. After Planning there will be period review at mid semester and end semester levels, to ensure that various targets envisaged in the plan are met. He appreciated the efforts of faculty and staff to develop conducive environment at CUSIT for teaching and research. Seminar on Career Building & Entrepreneurship held by NESTLE A group of female students attended a seminar on Career Building and Entrepreneurship held by NESTLE at PC, Peshawar on February 18,2016.The group was led by Ms. Saima Bano and Ms. Samra Kiran, Lecturers, Department of Management Sciences, CUSIT. One Day Workshop on Engineering Entrepreneurship and Constriction Supervision One Day Workshop on Engineering Entrepreneurship and Constriction Supervision was held at CUSIT in collaboration with Pakistan Engineering Council free cost for young Engineers. The corses covered important aspects of Entrepreneurship such as Idea Generation, Feasibility Analysis and Business proposal writing. the second session of the workshop covered the Construction Supervisory roles of engineers and the new opportunities created for young engineers by PEC. Mr. Ghulam Shabbir and and Prof. Dr. Attaullah shah were the resource persons. 9 Short Course on Technical Report Writing UET Peshawar Short Course on Technical Report Writing and presentation skills was held on Feb 23,2016 at Centre of Continues Engineering Education UET Peshawar. Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah VC City University was the resource person. Prof. Dr. Iftikhar Hussain VC UET Peshawar was chief guest at the occasion. The Director of Centre Mr. Asif Ali Shah welcome the Engineers and delegates and informed them about the role of the Centre. VC UET Peshawar highlighted the importance of Continuous Professional Development in the capacity building of Engineers. The resource person Dr. Attaullah Shah four lectures on Effective Communication, Communication Styles, Technical Report writing and presentation skills. More than 80 Engineers participated. VC City University also informed the Engineers about the CPD initiatives of the University and future plan of new courses for Engineers. The delegates took keen interest in the presentations. Engr. Shah Room Lecturer City University CED assisted him in the presentations Mandatory Certificate Courses started for Final Semester Students To prepare the City University graduates for the challenges of the dynamic job market, the above Certificate Course has been started which will be continued during Spring Semester Qualifying the courses will be mandatory for award of degree provided that other requirements are furnished. The Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Attaullah informed the students about the growing challenges of job market in terms of Knowledge Skills and Attitudes of the graduates and the plan of City University to develop these capacities in all the CUSIT graduates. 10 One Day Workshop on Bio-Pesticide and its Sustainable use " Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah VC City University Peshawar participated as Chief Guest for the " One Day Workshop on Bio-Pesticide and its Sustainable use" Dr. Qiash Bahadur Director General Agriculture Extension was the Guest of Honor at the occasion. Dr. Ihsaullah Khan DG National Institute of Food and Agriculture ( NIFA) welcome the delegates which were comprised of farmers, scientists and MPhil/PhD students. He shared various research and extensions activities on Food and Agriculture. DG Extension informed the delegates about the various initiatives of the department to improve the yield. The VC City University in his address, stressed over connecting the research with the real needs of society. He appreciated the role of NIFA in research and its application to the field to improve the productivity and yield. He also shared with the delegates that the City University Faculty of BS-English Students made a get together party at CUSIT, Prof. Dr. Attuallah Shah the VC of CUSIT and Mr. Zulfaikar Ali the HoD English attended the party. The VC and HoD English, welcoming the new batch and farewell to the outgoing students. BS-English Get together Party Management Science can work with the NIFA for the capacity building of the farmers for better packaging, branding and marketing of their produces. He also informed the delegates that President CUSIT has established " Entrepreneurship Startup Fund' for the young graduates to start new businesses. He shown his keen interest to start program in the " Bio- Informatics" and sought the support of NIFA. which was assured by DG NIFA" Procurement and Contract Management Closing Ceremony The Three Day Training Course on Procurement and Contract Management was held at CU-CSR Islamabad, 9-11 February, Various professionals and stakeholders from different industry and market participated in this Three Day Training Course, as trainee. At the end of the training program the certificates were given to the participant by Mr. Saqib Farooq Chohan (Project Director/Team Leader) Team for In-house Academic Audit Constituted at City University The above team has been constituted with representation from all the departments with Dr. Anisullah as the Convener in the meeting Chaired by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah. The team will develop and standardize the templates for Course files/labs files/lab Manuals in line with the requirements of various accreditation Councils. 11 Training Session on Rubric Form held at City University The Quality Enhancement Cell ( QEC) of City University Peshawar is strictly following the Standards of Quality Assurance Division of HEC, by deploying various standards in the Learning Management System. Prof. Dr. Jehanzeb, Director QEC, City University delivered lecture on "Rubric Forms as a tool for Assessment Team" to PTs members of different departments and programs. He explained the use of various parts of the form for assessment of the programs. The participants took keen interest in the tools and appreciated the handwork of Director QEC and his team. Due to consistent efforts of the QEC of CUSIT, the quality score of the University has increased and it has been targeted to achieve the highest category of W within next year. Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah, Vice Chancellor City University Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah, Vice Chancellor City University of Science and IT Peshawar presented his research paper on Accreditation of Engineering Education under Outcome Based Assessment (OBA) Model at International Conference on Research and Practices in Education (ICRPE) at AIOU Islamabad. The conference was attended by a large number of delegates from Pakistan and around the world. Dr. Shah shared his research work on Outcome Based Education and Assessment of Engineering Education at City University Peshawar. He emphasized that under Engineering Accretion Council (EAC) and Washington Accord, the Engineering graduates have to fulfill the requisite minimum 12 Program Outcomes and 9 criteria for its global accreditation and employability of graduates. He informed the Nestle the world s leading nutrition health and wellness company launched Healthy Women Program for female students of CUSIT. The program included the following activities: The program was coordinated by Mr. Sultan Asim Khanzada the then Assistant Manager, Corporate Affairs and Ms. Afsheen karim, Executive Secretary, CUSIT with the support of CU-CSR, Islamabad. Ms. Zaila Ahmed was the focal person from Nestle to conduct the program. It was an interactive program which highlighted the importance of nutrition and its impact on their lives. The Programs key message was that Healthy Women are essential for a healthy nation. participants about the assessment of various outcomes employed in the Engineering Geology course and its mapping with the University, faculty and program objectives. He shared with the audience, the various activities and tasks for developing the specified outcome in graduates and their assessment. 12 In the memory of Bayad-e-Faraz City university of Sciences and information Technology paid tribute to the well-known and famous Urdu poet, Ahmad Faraz. In collaboration with Ahmad Faraz Trust, Islamabad, Staff and students of CUSIT and some other guest whole heartedly participated in the event. Mr. Shibi Faraz (Senator) and Mr. Atta-Ul-Haq Qasmi (MD, PTV) also took part in the event on 19th January'2016, where as Dr. Muhammad Qasim Bhagio (Chairman of Pakistan's Literature Academy) fulfilled his role as the President of the said event. Mr. Atta-Ul-Haq Qasmi appreciated the works of Ahmad Faraz in his speech and inferred that his name as an eminent poet will always be remembered. Professor Dr. Nazirr Tabassum also delivered his speech and praised Ahmad Faraz. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah expressed his gratitude to all the guests and staff members and stated Ahmad Faraz as an incomparable poet. Dr. Sadia Tahir (Ahmad Faraz Trus, Islamabad) was also present with the other guests and staff of the university on this auspicious occasion. On providing splendid arrangements for the event arranged in the memory of Ahmad Faraz and Ahmad Faraz trust specially thanked the City University for the cooperation. This Tournament was held at Peshawar University between CUSIT and UET Peshawar, Mr. Irfan coach the team and made them prepared for the tournament. Both the teams played very well and perform their best to win the trophy. As the some of the moments between two teams turned into very interesting, where no one knew what will happened on next ball. But the game went well and the match was won by the opponent team. Our team players still congrats the other team with an honor and pride. 13 Young Champs Sports Fiesta Young Champs Sports Fiesta was arranged by the Sports Society of City University of Science & Information Technology, Peshawar on November 28, 2015 and concluded on December 05,2015.Young players from Peshawar Model Schools (Boys Branches) participated in Table Tennis, Badminton, Volley Ball, Basket Ball, Race and Tug of War. Mr. Qamar Zaman, Former World Champion, Squash graced the opening ceremony as Chief Guest. Speaking on the inaugural ceremony, Mr. Qamar Zaman appreciated the PMEIs system of education and motivated young players to take active parts in co-curricular activities. He visited the campus and encouraged the players. There was great enthusiasm and fervor among the students of different games. Winners of the First round played in the final round of the competition held on December 05, Gp. Capt. 14 Training Session by Women Digital League (WDL) CU-CSR initiated and coordinated an MoU between CUSIT and WDL to organize two weeks young entrepreneurship training for 40 aspiring young female students of CUSIT during the last two weeks of January Project Management Professional (PMP) CU-CSR organized a successful four days training course (February 15 to 19, 2016) for preparing individuals for PMP (Project Management Professional) Certification by PMI_USA in collaboration with SysComp International. This was a highly successful event and resulted in producing enlightened individual to take PMI exam. CUSIT MARKS ANTI-CORRUPTION DAY Anti Corruption Day was celebrated at CUSIT in collaboration with National Accountability Bureau (NAB). Mr. Naveed Haider, Director Investigation, NAB, Peshawar and Mr. Faheem Sikandr, Deputy Commissioner, Income Tax, Peshawar were guest speaker at the occasion who elaborated various aspects of corruption and its cruel effects on the society. Declamation contest was conducted among various students of the University and Peshawar Model Degree College (PMDC), Boys & Girls Campuses, Peshawar. Break the Chain of Corruption was the topic of the contest. 15 Director General Iranian Cultural Centre Mr. Ali Yousifi visited CUSIT To develop collaboration with Iranian Universities and Research Centers, a meeting was held between the Iranian Cultural Centre Peshawar and City University. Engr. Ali Yousifi and Mr. Ghuyur Hussain represented Iranian Cultural Centre, whereas Prof. Dr. Nazir Tabasssum and Mr. Amjad Ali Registrar City University also attended. Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah VC chaired the meeting. Matters of bilateral interests were discussed. The VC informed that in continuation to the Inter-ministerial meeting between the two countries, the HEC has advised Universities to develop collaboration with Iranian Universities and Research Institutes. It was resolved that the Iranian Cultural Centre will provide their support in celebrating the Maulana-i-Rum Day and establishing Saadi Corner in Library. The DG assured that the request of the City University will also be forwarded to Universities of Science and Technology at Iran for identifying areas of join collaboration in faculty trainings and exchange, joint research projects and research work publications. The VC thanked the delegates from Iranian Cultural Centre for their support. Global Entrepreneurship Week Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) 2016 was celebrated passionately by Entrepreneur Society of CUSIT from Nov 17-19, Three days activities included : 1. Business plan competition 2. Panel discussion on unleashing the power of Innovation 3. Express yourself painting competition Students from different disciplines participated in the Entrepreneurial activities supervised by Ms. Saima Bano and Mr. Zunoorain, Incharges of Entrepreneur Society, CUSIT. Mr. Ajmal Khan (Shaukat Khanum Hospital, Peshawar), Mr. Babar (Chamber of Commerce & Industries, KP) Mr. Hamad Ahmed (Islamic International University, Islamabad), Ms. Maria Umar (Women Digital League), Prof. Dr. Nasir Karim (CECOS University) and Mr. Salman Saeed (Peshawar 2.0) were the guest speakers of different sessions. They exchanged their views with students and believed that our youth possess immense potential and talent that must be exploited with right policies for the economic development of the country.
