2 Reminders We do not request transcripts with the UC application A transcript is requested July 1, AFTER a student is admitted and enrolls at UC. Transcripts need to show senior year grades and verify high school graduation. We do not conduct interviews We do not read letters of recommendation NOTE: Some majors require supplemental information or an audition, this is reflected in the UC application and will vary campus by campus. 3 Getting Started The UC Application is active on August 1 Your application is tied to your . Applicants should not share accounts! 4 Campus Choices You can select 1 or all 9 campuses Each campus choice will cost you $70 ($80 for international students) Each campus will require you to select a major You are NOT required to rank the various campuses you apply to Campus Choice & Major Declaration Depending on the UC campus, you may be able to apply to an alternate major If supplemental information or an audition is required, this box will appear with instructions Undeclared is an option at all 9 UC campuses. 4

10 Test Scores Section The ACT Plus Writing or SAT Reasoning is required (no preference) The SAT subject tests The SAT Subject tests are NOT required for freshman admission Review SAT subject test chart for details Select UC campuses may recommend a test based on a students intended major AP & IB exams 3, 4, and 5 on AP exam will earn college units 5 and higher on IB HL exams will earn college units Test Scores Section (Cont.) If you take more than one exam, UC will use the highest SINGLE DAY TOTAL score in your review Official test scores from the testing agency must be sent to one UC campus by December in the senior year Send UC all scores do not pick and choose. We will never penalize you for a low score 10

12 Activities and Awards Section Selection for admission includes a student s activities OUTSIDE the classroom UC does NOT have a preference between extracurricular activities Focus on experiences in 9 th, 10 th, 11 th and 12 th grades For each category you can enter 5 activities Activities and Awards Section Average the hours of your activities if they vary during the year Enter your activities from 9 th 12 th grade. Don t forget spring semester of senior year! After 12 th is meant for students who completed a GAP year, leave blank if you are a high school senior applying for admission You have 160 characters to describe each activity. Make your words count! We do not need full sentences in your description box 12

13 Purpose of the Personal Statement The Admissions staff on the UC campus would like your personal statement to add: Clarity Depth Context A richer perspective of your life, experiences and/or accomplishments Details into your application (academics or extracurricular activities) Sharing details on your home, school or community What is the UC Personal Statement? The applicants interview with UC admissions Provides clarity, richness and meaning to the application 3 options: 2 mandatory prompts & 1 optional prompt Mandatory prompts = 1,000 words total Optional prompt = 550 word total For a full workshop on the personal statement, check out our Personal Statement Webinar! 13

14 Personal Statement Prompts *Prompts are the same each year. Freshman Statement #1: Describe the world you come from for example, your family, community or school and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations. Freshman & Transfer Statement #2: Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are? Transfer Statement #1: What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities and what you have gained from your involvement. Personal Statement Section Cut and paste your response (not an attachment) Respond to two mandatory prompts Optional: Additional Comments No grammar check/spell check 1,000 total word limit word counter Start the writing process beforehand! 15 Additional Comments The Optional Prompt Use this space to tell us anything else you want us to know about you and your academic record that you have not had the opportunity to describe elsewhere in the application Limit your response to 550 words or less You should not continue an answer to prompt 1 or 2 Additional Comments (examples): My high school limits AP course registration to juniors and seniors, I had to wait until junior year to register for a course. I switched from a private boarding school to a public high school junior year when my dad lost his job and our family could not pay the tuition. No soccer in senior year. Funding canceled the program. Review & Submit When all the circles are green you can submit the UC application! Test scores will remain in progress when you submit Every time you log in to the application you will see this screen Keep a record of your application, print this page before you submit the UC application 15

16 Submitting the Application N ov 27, 2014 You will not be able to submit the application until November 1 Make sure to print a copy of the summary page for your records! Ask a counselor or parent to review the summary before you submit You can edit the application at any time before you push submit Payment Options Fall 2015 application fees: $70/campus $80/campus for international students 1. Credit card 2. Send in a check 3. Fee waiver If you inserted a family income in the About You section that makes you eligible for a fee waiver, it will automatically apply itself to your total cost Fee waivers are good for up to 4 campuses Eligibility is based on income and family size No refunds or cancellations 16
