1 Host Departments Student Affairs Fellowship Program Abrons Student Health Center Katrin Wesner, CAPPM Learning more about health promotion including program development, event planning, marketing, and working with peer educators Learning more about the role of a campus dietitian including developing a better understanding of the nutritional challenges faced by college students, programming efforts targeted around nutrition, and the resources available Learning about the administrative function of the Student Health Center including the delivery of programs and services, assessment, fee and revenue budget development and monitoring, managing a student health insurance program, and/or the effects of the Affordable Care Act on students Based on the applicant s interest areas we would be happy to design a fellowship Campus Recreation David Parker Provide fellow an opportunity to custom design an experience so that the fellow would learn from a variety of professionals and in a variety of areas. Plan, implement, and assess effective, experiential learning opportunities for UNCW students to engage, lead, and serve the campus and local communities Teach and learn with UNCW students to further develop individuals knowledge, skills, and capacities Intentionally explore and reflect upon engagement, leadership, and service through a socially just perspective Create and maintain innovative, collaborative partnerships with campus and community constituents in order to best serve the needs of students, the region, and the State of North Carolina Celebrate the integrity, growth, and accomplishments of UNCW students and their commitment to lifelong learning, engagement, leadership, and service

3 CROSSROADS Jen Adler Grant writing and grant management Data analysis and trend data Community partnership to reduce underage drinking Planning collaborative programs Health Communication Housing and Residence Life Matt Herrington Although the Housing and Residence Life Fellowship will hinge on the interests of the fellow and the specific issues being faced in a given semester, the following basic activities are possibilities for the experience: Shadow departmental leadership team members (Director and Assoc. Directors) Attend staff meetings (Residence Life and individual halls) and departmental training opportunities Gain an awareness of HRL facilities operations Gain an awareness of HRL budget issues Assist Residence Life staff with various major initiatives depending upon semester (ex., Move- In, departmental assessments, RA recruitment and selection, etc.) Assist with major departmental programming initiatives (ex., Tunnel of Oppression, Around the World, Fall Fiesta, etc.) Serve as a member on a Departmental Committee A special project as determined by the fellow and fellowship mentor

4 Office of the Dean of Students Jennie McNeilly Exposure to the Office of the Dean of Students service areas which include, student conduct, Student Academic Honor Code, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Community Standards, Fraternity & Sorority Life, case management and Seahawk Perch (off campus students, veterans/military affiliated, community relations, graduate student life and non-traditional student services). Attend a variety meetings, committees, and events coordinated by the Office of the Dean of Students. Learn about the campus conduct system and observe conduct conferences and campus conduct board hearings (can also include Student Academic Honor Code and Academic Honor Board hearings). The Fellow is encouraged to customize his/her Fellowship to meet their interest within the Office of the Dean of Students. Student Affairs Assessment, Research, and Planning Andy Mauk Develop a greater understanding of assessment principles and the assessment process. Participate in the development of various survey instruments and focus group protocols. Provide feedback and develop original surveys and protocols as needed. Analyze data from various sources, i.e. surveys, reports, databases. Report results to departments within Student Affairs. Explore and discuss other aspects of interest related to assessment, learning outcomes, and strategic planning. Learn about technologies used in assessments (e.g., itouch s, clickers, digital recorder, scanner) If desired, work toward a presentation or publication based on findings from the Division

7 University College - Academic Advising and Intervention Practices Michelle Vliem Provide an opportunity to gain knowledge about the many components of academic advising implemented by University College. Shadow advisor(s) and learning about pre- and early registration, orientation, outreach, academic intervention, major declaration and academic policies and procedures. Development opportunities may be structured according to specific interests of the participant. University College Early Registration/Orientation Zack Underwood Gain knowledge about the behind the scenes planning, preparation and implementation of Early Registration (for new freshmen prior to Orientation) and academic advising during Orientation. Learn more about Early Registration and how we communicate academic advising tips to students. Learn about Orientation from University College s perspective and the process of organizing advisors to advise all incoming students. Development opportunities may be structured according to specific interests of the participant. University College First-Year Experience Curricular Programs (Spring) Rebecca Stultz Develop a general understanding of the various aspects of planning, development and implementation of the first-year curricular programs housed within University College: First-Year Seminar, Cornerstone Learning Communities, EXCEL Learning Community, Synergy Common Reading Program. Attend bi-weekly Curriculum Team planning meetings, as well as assisting individual program coordinators, will provide familiarity with: curriculum planning; instructor recruitment, hiring

8 and training; development of course materials and resources; recruitment of incoming students into learning communities. (2 hour per week commitment throughout the spring semester) Development opportunities may be structured according to specific interests of the participant, e.g., instructor training, student recruitment, development of teaching resources, etc. University College Transfer Student Advising for Orientation (Spring/Summer) Erika Hanson Gain knowledge and hands-on experience with the behind the scenes planning, preparation and implementation of academic advising during Transfer Orientation. Assist transfer advisors as they prepare for and facilitate transfer advising during transfer orientations in May and June. Gain experience reviewing transfer student records, preparing orientation files, and observing transfer student advising which takes place during orientation. The fellowship will be most involved during the months of April, May, and June. As an alternative, participants have the option to focus on the August transfer orientation and work during July instead. University College Pre-Health Advising Jemilia Davis (Spring) Develop an understanding of pre-health advising and programs provided to students interested in health careers that require graduate or professional school. Training, shadowing and presenting/teaching opportunities. Development opportunities may be structured according to specific interests of the participant.
