2 The Opportunity The Indiana Institute of Technology (Indiana Tech) community seeks applications and nominations of outstanding leaders for its next Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Vice President for Academic Affairs will have the opportunity to develop cutting-edge programs and raise the academic reputation of the institution. The start date for the position is July 1,

3 The Institution Founded in 1930 as an engineering college for men, Indiana Tech today is a comprehensive institution with a core purpose of providing career-focused, professional programs of higher education. Indiana Tech is a four-year private, not-for-profit institution regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and has been an AQIP participant since In addition, the university is a member of the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL). Indiana Tech has cultivated a strong financial position over the last decade, a hallmark of a proactive business-model approach to decision-making and sound fiscal stewardship. The dedicated faculty and staff offer a rich mix of academic programming. Indiana Tech delivers programs on campus, in regional locations, and online, leading to degrees at the Associate s, Bachelor s, Master s, and Ph.D. levels to both traditional and non-traditional students. Indiana Tech has three academic units: the College of Business; the College of Engineering, in which the School of Computer Sciences resides; and the College of General Studies (soon to be renamed Arts and Sciences), in which the School of Education and the Center for Criminal Justice reside. The three Colleges oversee Indiana Tech s academic programs for nontraditional students, administered through the College of Professional Studies (CPS). Several engineering programs are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), the Health Information Technology program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM), and the College of Business is accredited by the International Assembly of College Business Education (IACBE). The School of Education holds candidacy status and has a planned visit by the Council for Accreditation of Education Preparation (CAEP) in March The traditional day student body includes 1,570 students who matriculate on the beautiful grounds of the residential main campus adjacent to downtown Fort Wayne, the second largest city in Indiana, whose revitalization in recent years has made it a regional success story. More than half of the day students are involved in NAIA intercollegiate athletic programs, many of which have national prominence. International students hailing from 34 countries make up nearly 20% of the day student population. More than 8,500 students are enrolled in the College of Professional Studies in undergraduate and graduate programs. CPS students typically take classes online, and/or at one of the 14 classroom locations in Indiana and Kentucky. The online program has steadily grown and at this time, approximately 75% of CPS classes are taken in the online format. There are also two online enrollment centers in Chicago and one in Detroit. Indiana Tech is committed to supporting its broad array of programming in the classroom and online to ensure its future growth. 3

6 Background Dr. Karl Einolf assumed the presidency of Indiana Tech in July of 2017 and has made raising academic quality, increasing retention and graduation rates, and improving the student experience as top priorities. The day student population has seen growth in enrollment to 1,570 students, and the campus has expanded its residential life services and facilities. The College of Professional Studies, in which the majority of students matriculate, has seen rapid growth and has expanded its reach across the state and into Illinois, Kentucky, and Michigan. Indiana Tech is in excellent financial condition, with minimal debt. The endowment has grown to more than $120 million, with net surpluses smartly reinvested over the last several years. On the Fort Wayne campus, several state-of-the-art buildings and facilities have been recently constructed or upgraded, and the campus has little deferred maintenance. The Vice President for Academic Affairs reports to the President and serves as the chief academic officer of the University. As such, the successful candidate will be the principle champion for innovative vision, leadership, and strategic direction for academics at the University. Reporting to the Vice President are the Dean of Business, the Dean of Engineering & Computer Sciences, and the Dean of General Studies (soon to be renamed Arts and Sciences), the Director of McMillen Library, the Director of the Center for Creative Collaboration (C3), and the Executive Assistant to the Vice President. 6

7 Opportunities & Challenges The Vice President for Academic Affairs will have the opportunity to provide strong leadership and advocacy for faculty and staff in order to enhance and elevate academic programs at the institution. Working across disciplines to harness the faculty s passion and creativity, the Vice President will lead the development of new, relevant, and innovative academic programs. Another objective is to strengthen the current academic support structure to facilitate ease of curriculum revisions and expansion, and explore the impact of technology on the teaching and learning process. With an AQIP visit scheduled for January of 2018 and with a new emphasis on continuous quality improvement through the accreditation process, experience with accreditation and program review (especially within the Higher Learning Commission), as well as sound assessment practices, are critical. In addition, the next Vice President will be counted on to: Implement academic strategies that will increase retention and graduation rates; Improve the operations and the academic oversight in all academic programs for full time traditional students and for part time adult students who take courses online and/or at 14 locations throughout the region; Support faculty engaging in professional development and scholarship activities; Enhance online and adult education programs; and Foster and nurture cohesion and community among faculty, staff, and students. The next Vice President will be an essential leader in implementing the new strategic planning and campus master planning processes currently underway. It is important that the next Vice President be a data-driven decision-maker, a collaborative and transparent leader, and an effective team member on a quick-moving and functional cabinet. He or she will support a talented team of senior administrators and staff who uphold the overall excellence of the institution. 7

8 Qualifications The campus community seeks a new Vice President for Academic Affairs who is a person of proven capability and unquestioned integrity, and who demonstrates a commitment to the mission and values of Indiana Tech. The successful candidate will preferably possess a Ph.D., or hold a terminal degree in his or her field of study from a regionally accredited institution of higher education. In addition, the next Vice President will have a strong academic background in teaching, service, and professional activities; a proven track record of success in academic administration, with specific experience in assessment processes, accreditation procedures, new program development, and program reviews. He or she will have a record of scholarship and be eligible for the rank of full professor with tenure in a discipline housed within one of Indiana Tech s degree programs. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills and experience bringing constituencies together to engage collaboratively and collegially. In addition, it is expected that the next Vice President for Academic Affairs will: Communicate effectively with all constituents by listening, speaking and writing, and be an articulate and credible advocate for academic quality, the institution and its mission; Be a strategic thinker and action-oriented leader with strong skills in team building; and Advocate for both traditional and non-traditional learners, care deeply about students, and embrace diversity and inclusion on and off campus. 8
