1 SECTION 5 FACULTY EVALUATION 5.1 FACULTY EVALUATION PROCEDURE SUMMARY Gverning Plicies: Sectin 7, Faculty Handbk Perfrmance and Evaluatin Prcedure: As defined in the Faculty Handbk, annual perfrmance evaluatin is required fr all tenured and tenure track faculty, all teaching faculty, all library faculty, and all research faculty hlding a named rank. Annual evaluatin f the faculty is undertaken in rder t: 1) Encurage prfessinal develpment, enhancement, and/r renewal; 2) Encurage individual excellence and achievement within a framewrk f shared and accepted standards f equitable prfessinal judgment; 3) Encurage participatin in activities that are essential t the missins and gals f the university and its departments and divisins; 4) Recgnize individuals fr prviding satisfactry r exemplary perfrmance, r t give apprpriate cunsel t thse individuals whse perfrmance is unsatisfactry thrugh a mtivatinal, rather than demralizing prcess; 5) Dcument perfrmance: (a) fr use in academic planning, prgrammatic review, and ther internal activities, (b) fr cnsideratin, alng with ther pertinent infrmatin, in persnnel decisins regarding salary, retentin, prmtin, and/r tenure, and (c) fr use in preparing university dcuments fr external reprts. 6) Set individual faculty gals. All faculty members defined abve must cmplete a Faculty Data Reprt Narrative (FDRN) annually. The schedule fr cmpleting the FDRN is prvided by Academic Affairs, as part f the Academic Affairs calendar. Typically, the cmpletin date by which faculty must submit FDRNs t their Department Heads is smetime during the early prtin f the Spring semester. The FDRN template is available nline n the Academic Affairs website. Nte, that Departments, wrking with Clleges and individual faculty will prvide and verify institutinal data (e.g., curses taught, enrllment, students advised, students graduated, research funding) fr each faculty member frm which the narrative is t be cnstructed. The evaluatin template that the Department Head may use can be fund nline n the Academic Affairs website. After cmpletin f all departmental evaluatins, Department Heads submit all FDRNs and the evaluatin frms t their respective clleges. 4 5.3 DEPARTMENT HEAD EVALUATION PROCEDURE SUMMARY The Department Head prepares a Department Head Faculty Data Reprt and submits same with supprting materials t his/her cllege Dean by the deadline psted n the Academic Affairs calendar. Typically, these are due by the third Friday in February. The Department Head Faculty Data Reprt Narrative template is available nline n the Academic Affairs website. Prir t the end f the academic year the Cllege Dean reviews the material submitted and evaluates the annual perfrmance f each Department Head in his/her cllege. The evaluatin template that the Dean uses can be fund nline n the Academic Affairs website. The Dean schedules a meeting with each Department Head t discuss his/her evaluatin f the Department Head s annual perfrmance. The DH has demnstrated ability t represent all disciplines embedded in the unit and t develp crss-disciplinary interactins with internal and external partners. 7 5.5 COURSE EVALUATIONS Online student evaluatins f faculty effectiveness in teaching are cnducted each semester, including the summer terms. Curse evaluatins are mandatry fr all curses with enrllment f five students r mre. Only instructrs f recrd, thse wh are frmally defined as having respnsibility fr curse delivery are evaluated as part f the curse evaluatin prcess. Fr curses that are team taught, all instructrs f recrd are evaluated separately. Frmal curse evaluatins are cnducted during the last week f each semester. The Office f Academic affairs will send ntificatins t instructrs and students that evaluatins can nw be cmpleted. Evaluatins are made available via links r thrugh Blackbard. T ensure high respnse rates, Faculty are asked t: Althugh students can use their cmputers, tablets, r mbile devices t cmplete the survey by clicking an apprpriate link, t ensure high submissin rates it is recmmended that faculty allw 10 minutes during class time fr cmpletin f the evaluatins. Academic Affairs will prvide the links fr each curse t students in a separate . A mdule with links t evaluatins is als available n the MyMines Tab in Blackbard. If classrm time is prvided, the instructr shuld leave the rm while the students cmplete the evaluatin. Evaluatin results are available t Faculty and Academic Departments tw days after semester grades are psted by the registrar. In additin t the frmal, end-f-semester evaluatins, faculty are encuraged t use the Blackbard evaluatin system fr early and mid-semester feedback. Any evaluatin feedback btained utside f the frmal, end-f-semester evaluatin, is t be used by the faculty member nly, s that he/she may engage in nging curse imprvement effrts. Last Revisin: March 9,
8 5.6 PROFESSIONAL GROWTH PLANS FOR TENURE-TRACK FACULTY Gverning Plicies: Sectin 7.2.1, Faculty Handbk Prfessinal Grwth Plans fr Newly Appinted Faculty Sectin 8.1.4, Faculty Handbk Preliminary Tenure Review Prcedure: All tenure-track faculty are required t prepare a Prfessinal Grwth Plan (PGP) during the first semester f emplyment at Mines. The plan shuld be develped in cnsultatin with the faculty member s Department Head, and at minimum cver the perid f the prbatinary appintment up t the Preliminary Tenure Review (PTR). PGPs are reviewed as part f any faculty evaluatin, including the PTR. As such, the PGP cnstitutes an early step in the prmtin and tenure prcess. Prfessinal Grwth Plans need nt be vluminus. They shuld, hwever, be bradly mdeled t parallel the cntent and sectin frmat f the Faculty Data Reprt Narrative (FDRN). That is, the PGP shuld include majr sectins titled Teaching, Schlarship and Service. The cntent addressed in each these sectins shuld relate t the subcategries defined in each sectin, such that it is clear that by successful implementing the PGP will naturally lead t strng perfrmance evaluatins as measured by the FDRN and ultimately a strng indicatin f successful tenure applicatin as prvided by the PTR prcess. The PGP shuld be transmitted t the Department Head by the deadline prvided by the Academic Affairs calendar. The Department Head shall review the plan, and if necessary meet with the faculty member t discuss and mdify the prpsed plan. Once apprved by the Department Head, the plan shall be transmitted t the apprpriate Cllege Dean. Upn review by the Dean, the PGP shall be frwarded t AA and filed in the individual s persnnel file.
