3 OFFICE OF THE DEPUTY VICE- CHANCELLOR RESEARCH The Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research provides strategic leadership for Deakin s research agenda. The Deputy Vice- Chancellor Research holds overall responsibility for the University s research services and for the Institute for Frontier Materials and the Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation. The Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research has oversight of Deakin s research portfolio including coordinating the university s research strategy, building Deakin s international research reputation, capability and expertise in areas critical to Deakin s goals, delivering research services and support for academics and research students, strategies for research engagement with business and industry, all aspects of institutional research reporting, research promotion and communication and supporting the research vision and direction of the university. Reporting to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research are three full time Pro Vice-Chancellors (PVC): PVC Research Training and Performance Enhancement, PVC Researcher Development and Integrity and PVC Industry and Strategic Partnerships. In addition, two fractional PVCs (PVC ICT Innovation & Translation and PVC Defense Technology) provide portfolio-specific coordination and strategic assistance to the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Executive Deans. In addition, the operation and activities of the Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM) and the Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation (IISRI) are included in the research portfolio with their Directors reporting to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research. 3

4 APPOINTMENT OF PRO VICE-CHANCELLOR STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS The Pro Vice-Chancellor Strategic Partnerships will provide centralised leadership in developing and managing strategic partnerships and related professional activities across the whole University, particularly in relation to research and industry engagement. The position will also interact regularly with other staff within the University, their peers in other universities, both nationally and internationally, and with community, professional and industry organisations at an executive level. RESPONSIBILITIES The appointee is responsible for; Developing and implementing a strategy to leverage existing key partnerships and identifying and cultivating new partnerships that have strategic relevance and benefit principally for Deakin s research, but also teaching, student experience and philanthropy in collaboration with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, members of the Deakin Executive and other relevant Deakin stakeholders. Representing the University at all levels in developing and driving the partnerships and opportunities within the Geelong Industry Precinct. Leading and managing major strategic research and external engagement programs and opportunities as appropriate. Developing and managing strategic partnerships with international companies and institutions to support Deakin s Global Engagement Strategy in collaboration with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Global Engagement, the Pro Vice-Chancellor International, the Director Deakin South Asia and other relevant Deakin stakeholders. Developing and coordinating efficient systems and processes to facilitate and deepen strategic partnerships that enhance the reputation of the University. Representing Deakin at senior level as required to support and generate strategic partnerships with government and industry. Ensuring the implementation of all University policies that relate to the areas for which the position is responsible; in particular, those relating to equal opportunity, occupational health and safety, risk management, and staff development. 4

5 ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT The Pro Vice-Chancellor Strategic Partnerships will report to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research. The Pro Vice-Chancellor Strategic Partnerships may also take direction from Vice-Chancellor. Strategic partnerships are significant formal partnerships with external companies, organisations or institutions where there may be multiple and cross disciplinary points of engagement across the university. ORGANISATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS The position will liaise with key University Units, external industry and State and Commonwealth Governments and associated entities in Australia as well as key international partners. Within the University, these relationships include the Executive, their direct reports and others as required. The position will represent the University at the appropriate level within professional, political and commercial communities in Australia and internationally. POSITION LOCATION This position is located at our Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus. PROBATIONARY PERIOD This role is subject to a 12 month probationary period. The appointee must have demonstrable evidence in the following areas: Qualifications PhD in a relevant field (or equivalent). A strong record of scholarship and a presence in industry and higher education at national and international levels. Experience Proven ability to create and nurture enduring significant partnerships aligned with University strategy Effectively build and manage relationships to generate mutual benefit. Senior leadership and management experience, with demonstrated success in the development, coordination and delivery of complex programs, including managing government stakeholders and industry partnerships. Evidence of ability to develop teams and build collaboration and engagement as well as work collaboratively and constructively with colleagues and within university systems, committee and board structures and decision making processes. Demonstrable written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills relevant to establishing and maintaining effective teams with a broad cross-section of University staff, partners and the wider professional community. 5
