2 Admission Guide 2016 This guide is made to help the applicant to get through the application process of the Bachelor s Program in International Business (also called the BScBA Program) offered at the Aalto School of Business, Mikkeli Campus. Students accepted to the BScBA Program have an automatic study right to continue their studies in the Master s Programs at the Aalto University School of Business, Helsinki Campus after completing the Bachelor s Degree at the Mikkeli Campus. In this admission guide, the BScBA admission refers to both Bachelor s and Master s study rights. This Admission Guide contains an unofficial translation of the admission process and criteria of the Bachelor s Program in International Business offered at the Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli Campus. 4 1 Admission Process and the Requirements 1.1 The Aalto University School of Business Established in 2010, Aalto University was formed when the Helsinki School of Economics, the University of Art and Design Helsinki and the Helsinki University of Technology were merged. Merging the three universities provides Aalto University possibilities to build its operations on topquality research and research-based education. Aalto University is striving to improve the quality of its activities and to exploit the opportunities provided by interdisciplinary cooperation. For further information on Aalto University, please visit The Aalto University School of Business (Aalto BIZ) is the new name of the Helsinki School of Economics (HSE), which was founded in The Aalto University School of Business is an innovative and lively community of about 3,800 students and over 600 researchers, teachers and service personnel in three campuses in Helsinki, in Otaniemi and in Mikkeli. The Bachelor s Program in International Business (also called the BScBA Program), located at the Mikkeli campus, is one of the leading academic programs in Finland, offering cutting-edge approaches to business education in an international learning environment. The program leads to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics and Business Administration; an officially accredited university degree in Finland. Students accepted to the program will get a study right to the Master of Science degree in Economics and Business Administration, so that the student first completes the Bachelor of Science in Economics and Business Administration degree at the Mikkeli Campus and after graduating from Mikkeli, the student has an automatic study right to continue their studies in one of the Master s Programs at the Helsinki Campus. All students in the program major in International Business and the language of instruction is English. The BScBA Degree can be obtained in less than three years due to the fast pace of the program. Most courses are taught by visiting faculty in intensive three-week modules that run throughout the year. The academic year consists of fifteen modules. For each module, classes are scheduled for three hours a day, five days a week, for a total of 45 contact hours including examinations. All students are expected to attend courses on a full-time basis yearround. There are normally four short breaks during the academic year. Students will also study one semester abroad at one of the many partner universities of the program. Please see section 4. 5 1 Admission Process and the Requirements 1.2 Applying in the Joint Application System In Finland, the joint online application system to Finnish higher education institutions (universities and polytechnics) is used for studies starting in fall The applications to the Mikkeli Bachelor s Program in International Business are sent through this joint online application system. In the joint online application system, there are two separate application periods: during January 8 27, 2016 for programs taught in languages other than Finnish, like the BScBA Program, and for the Academy of Fine Arts, and during March 16 April 6, 2016 for programs taught in Finnish. All applications to the Bachelor s Program in International Business (admission groups I-III) must be submitted during the application period January 8 27, 2016 (by 3:00 p.m., GMT +2:00 hrs). Please note that the application form will be available only during the application period on studyinfo.fi. There is a separate schedule for delivering the requested attachments to Aalto University (see 1.5 Delivering the Required Attachments later in this section). Five students can be accepted to the program based on their studies completed in the Open University. There is a separate Aalto School of Business admission process for the Open University Track (both to Helsinki/ Otaniemi Campus and Mikkeli Campus) and the application period is March 16 April 6, Please see section 2.4 Open University Track for more information on this admission track. At (opintopolku.fi in Finnish), you can search for education programs and fill out the application form online. You can search for all degreeoffering programs at Finnish higher education institutions (Search for study options). You can find the BScBA Program from the studyinfo.fi-portal by using BScBA as your search. Specific instructions on how to fill out the application and how to register on the website will be posted online on studyinfo.fi before the application period starts on January 8, If you have any problems while filling out the application form, please contact the Mikkeli Campus admissions office: bscba-mikkeli@aalto.fi tel.: When filling out the application form, an applicant can apply to a maximum of six (6) programs in order of their preference. Only the study option prioritized the highest to which the applicant s points are enough for admission will be offered. The same application form is used for both of the application periods. For example, if you apply to study business in the BScBA Program at the Mikkeli Campus as well as to other Bachelor s programs taught in Finnish in Finland, remember to fill out the application for the BScBA Program already in January after which you can reopen the form in March-April and add your other choices. 5

6 1 Admission Process and the Requirements Please note that the order of study options filled in during the first application period in January cannot be altered during the second application period in March- April 2016, and it is not possible to submit an application to the BScBA Program during the second application period March-April During one academic term, an applicant may accept only one study place in a degree program in Finland leading to a higher education degree. The purpose of this is to ensure admission to higher education institutions for as many students as possible. After you have filled in the application form, you will be able to review it on the screen. In order to send the application form on time you need to send the application form by pressing the application submission button by the deadline of January 27, 2016 by 3:00 p.m. (GMT +2:00 hrs). You will receive a confirmation if the application has been submitted successfully. Please take into account that the joint online application system may not work properly during the last minutes, if there are too many users. In the application form you can also see the list of the required attachments you have to send to Aalto University and to other universities and the correct delivery addresses. You should also print out your application form for later use. You need to send a copy of the application form with the attachments you are sending to the admission office of Aalto University. Please read more about the required attachments on section 1.5 Delivering the Required Attachments. Applications which are submitted after the application deadline will not be considered. Thus, make sure to submit your application early enough. The applicant is solely responsible for meeting the application deadline. If the application does not contain the requested documents, the applicant may be removed from further consideration. Please note that any substantive misrepresentation of information during the application process will void any offer of admission. If such misrepresentation is discovered after admission, it will result in immediate termination from the Aalto University School of Business Bachelor s Program in International Business in Mikkeli. General Eligibility to Apply Every applicant must fulfill the formal eligibility requirement for admission to the Bachelor s studies defined in the Finnish University Law. An applicant can show this eligibility, for example, with such secondary education which gives an applicant eligibility for university studies in the awarding country (e.g. Finnish Matriculation Examination Certificate, High School Diploma or its equivalent, International Baccalaureate Diploma, European Baccalaureate Diploma, Vocational College Diploma (minimum 3 years), Reifeprüfung Diploma, Community College Diploma equivalent to an Associate of Arts Degree or a University or College Diploma equivalent to a Bachelor s degree or higher). 6

7 1 Admission Process and the Requirements 1.3 Admission Groups for the BScBA Program In the year 2016, a minimum of 80 students will be formally admitted to the Bachelor s Program in International Business in Mikkeli in three separate admission groups. In addition, five (5) students can be accepted to the program based on their studies completed in the Open University. Please see section 2.4 Open University Track for more information on this admission track. Below you can find information on the admission groups, and the full admission criteria for each admission group is described in section 2. The Bachelor s Program in International Business offered at the Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli Campus has its own unique admission process and criteria. The information below concerns the admission process for admission groups I-III. Please see section 2.4 for information on the Open University Track admission. Students are accepted to the Bachelor s Program in International Business at Mikkeli Campus through a highly selective process that consists of three admission groups. NOTE. An applicant must apply via one and only one admission track. Four types of high school diplomas earned in Finland or abroad are recognized in the admission process: Finnish Matriculation Examination Certificate International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) Reifeprüfung Diploma (RP) European Baccalaureate Diploma (EB) The admission groups are: Admission group I is for applicants who have graduated with one of the types of high school diplomas listed above. The admission is based on points awarded for grades obtained while earning one of the four types of diplomas. Admission group II is for applicants who have graduated with one of the types of high school diplomas listed above. However, the admission is based on test scores from the SAT Test. Admission group III is for applicants without any of the types of high school diplomas listed above but who can demonstrate university eligibility. The admission is based on test scores from the SAT Test. 1.4 Application Fee Applicants to Finnish higher education institutions (universities and polytechnics) who are applying based on a degree awarded outside the EU/EEA area or Switzerland will be required to pay an application fee of 100. The application fee concerns applicants to Bachelor's and Master's level studies. Application fees will be collected in Finland for the first time when applying for studies beginning in fall The collection of the application fee is independent of the home country or nationality of the applicant. The fee will be collected according to the country where the applicant s previous degree has been granted. 7

8 1 Admission Process and the Requirements If the qualification that you are applying with is granted elsewhere than in the EU/EEA countries: (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Gibraltar) or Switzerland you are required to pay the fee of 100 before sending the application. The application fee is valid for one application period, and it covers all the applications that you make for study programs that begin in the same semester. The application fee payment can only be made electronically through the Studyinfo.fi service. The application and the payment have to be made by the same person. An applicant who is liable for payment must pay the application fee in order for the application to be processed. The payment will not be returned even if the applicant is not accepted to any of the study programs that he or she has applied to. The payment can be returned only if it has been faultily collected. If you have questions about the application fee, please contact the Finnish National board of Education by or find out more information on studyinfo.fi. 1.5 Delivering the Required Attachments Please notice that you only need to send certain attachments to Aalto University depending on your admission group. Therefore, it is also important that you choose your admission group correctly. All relevant attachments should be sent to the admission office of Aalto University by the given deadline (please find the address at the end of this section). Here below you can see the requirements and deadlines for the requested attachments. All Applicants in Admission Groups I, II and III Applicants in the admission groups I, II and III must deliver a copy of the certification of their university eligibility (i.e. a copy of their high school diploma) to the admission office of the Aalto University. NOTE. Only the applicants who have received their Finnish Matriculation Examination Certificate after the year 1989 do not have to send a copy of their diploma as an attachment to the application form. NOTE that all documents in languages other than Finnish or English must be accompanied by a translation into English. In addition, if the school grading system is unusual, a memorandum of explanation is required. The timetable for delivering a copy of the certification is following: If the applicant has graduated before spring 2016, the deadline for delivering the copy of the certification (i.e. the official transcript or a copy of the diploma from upper secondary school, undergraduate, graduate and professional school 8

9 1 Admission Process and the Requirements attended) is February 10, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. (GMT +2:00 hrs). IB, EB, RP graduates of spring 2016 need to deliver the preliminary IB, EB, and RP grades (document given by the school) as soon as they are published, but at the latest by June 9, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. (GMT +2:00 hrs), and a copy of their final diploma or other certification of the final grades given by the school as soon as a student receives the final grades, but at the latest by July 15, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. (GMT +2:00 hrs). Other graduates of spring 2016 need to deliver a copy of the final diploma or another document given by the school proofing the expected graduation (for example, a temporary high school certificate of graduation) by June 9, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. (GMT +2:00 hrs), and a copy of the final diploma at the latest by July 15, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. (GMT +2:00 hrs). In Addition Applicants in Admission Groups II and III All applicants in the admission groups II and III must request the SAT test score report to be submitted directly to the Aalto University School of Business (code 1700) by the testing authority. To be considered, a test score report must be submitted from a test taken after January 1, Applicants who have already taken the SAT Test must also request their test score reports to be delivered to the Aalto University School of Business. In all cases, the deadline for delivering the SAT Test score report to the Aalto University School of Business is June 15, 2016 by 3:00 p.m. (GMT +2:00 hrs). If you give us your username and password to your College Board account on the application form, we can try to print out your test report if the official SAT score report has not arrived by the deadline. The Address for Delivering the Required Attachments All relevant attachments should be sent to the admission office of Aalto University. You need to send a copy of the application form with the attachments you are sending to the admission office of Aalto University. 11 1 Admission Process and the Requirements 1.7 Admission Decisions and Enrolment The final decision on admission is made by the Dean of the Aalto University School of Business. The admission results will be published at the latest on July 1, A rejected applicant cannot reapply for admission until the next academic year. When informed of the acceptance, an applicant will receive instructions on how to accept the study place. Students admitted to the BScBA Program at the latest by July 1, 2016 must confirm their enrolment by July 15, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. (GMT +2:00 hrs). If the study place has not been accepted by the given deadline, the applicant loses his/her right to study at the Aalto University School of Business. The confirmation of acceptance is binding and irrevocable and it cannot be altered. Applicants accepted from the waiting list after July 1, 2016 will be informed on this by . Please check your regularly during July 2 August 15, The admission process ends when all the admission groups are full or at the latest by August 15, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. (GMT +2:00 hrs). The mandatory orientation week for the new students will be organized during week 34 (August 22-26, 2016). There will also be an unofficial program organized by the students during the weekend of August 27 28, The courses will begin on Monday, August 29, A study right already granted may be cancelled if it is revealed that the applicant has provided the Aalto University School of Business with, in any way, inaccurate, false or misleading information. Dissatisfied applicants may appeal an admission decision within 14 days of the publication of the results by submitting a written appeal to the university to the given address by the deadline. Your appeal must specify the subject matter of the appeal as well as the grounds for it. The appeal should contain the applicant s personal data and be signed either by the applicant or his/her authorized representative. NOTE: Accepting the study place in a university is binding and irrevocable and it cannot be altered. Do not confirm your enrolment until you are sure about your situation. However, do note that the confirmations arriving after the prescribed time limit cannot be considered and the applicant loses a study right already earned. 1.8 Statistics from the Admission Process 2015 Please find below the minimum admission points for each admission group in the year 2015 (including the students accepted from the waiting list). 13 2 Admission Criteria 2016 In the year 2016, a minimum of 80 students will be accepted to the Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli Campus, Bachelor s Program in International Business through a highly selective process that consists of three admission groups I-III with a specific criteria for each group. NOTE. An applicant must choose one of the admission groups and apply in that one only. In addition, five (5) students can be accepted to the program on the basis of their studies completed in the Open University. There is a separate Aalto School of Business admission process for this Open University Track. Please see section 2.4 Open University Track for more information. Every applicant must fulfill the formal eligibility requirement for admission to the Bachelor s studies defined in the Finnish University Law. Please see section 1.2 Applying in the Joint Application System 2016 for more information. 2.1 Admission Group I 45 new students are admitted via this admission track. Applicants in this admission group must have received one of the four types of high school diplomas in Finland or abroad: 1. Finnish Matriculation Examination Certificate 2. International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) 3. Reifeprüfung Diploma (RP) 4. European Baccalaureate Diploma (EB) If an applicant has graduated with more than one of the diplomas listed above, an applicant needs to specify in the application form which diploma he/ she wants to use as a base for the admission. The required attachments for applicants in admission group I are: a copy of the high school diploma o All documents in languages other than Finnish or English must be accompanied by a translation into English. o Only the applicants who have received their Finnish Matriculation Examination Certificate after the year 1989 do not have to send a copy of their diploma as an attachment to the application form. Please see the timetable for delivering the attachments on section 1.5 Delivering the Required Attachments. The admission in admission group I is based on points awarded for grades obtained while earning one of the four types of diplomas and the points will be given as specified in the next section Matriculation examinations. For IB, EB and RP graduates of spring 2016, the total points will first be calculated based on their preliminary grades. Thus, the admission is conditional and will be confirmed once the final grades are published. After the final grades have been submitted to Aalto University, the final points will be calculated for the applicant. In case the final score is not enough for direct admission, the admission decision will be changed and the applicant will be placed on the waiting list. The applicant will be informed on this. However, the applicant can still be admitted to the program from the waiting list. 13

14 2 Admission Criteria 2016 Should the total score of two or more applicants equal, the following criteria will be used. If there is more than one applicant with the same total score in place 45, the applicant who receives the best score from English exam will be admitted. If there is still more than one applicant in place 45, the applicant who receives the best score from Mathematics exam will be admitted. If there is still more than one applicant in place 45, the applicant who receives the best score from a language exam other than English will be admitted. If there is still more than one applicant with the same score in place 45, all of these applicants will be admitted. If an applicant is offered a study place, but declines admission, the next applicant on the reserve list of this admission group is admitted. If an applicant registers as a non-attending student, the next applicant on the reserve list may be admitted. Matriculation Examinations The points for the applicant in admission group I will be calculated as presented on the following pages. The maximum number of points that can be earned is 42. Only exams taken for the same diploma will be taken into account. For example, if an applicant has earned International Baccalaureate Diploma and has taken as well the Swedish exam in the Finnish Matriculation Examination, the Swedish exam will not be taken into account when counting the points. If an applicant has retaken exams or supplemented the diploma, these grades will be taken into account when counting the points. 14

One of them has to be mathematics exam and one of them has to be a language exam. The SAT Test must have been taken after January 1, There will be a new version of the SAT Test in spring In order to become accepted to the program, applicants must meet the minimum requirements set for the SAT Test scores. There is a separate admission process for the Open University Track (both to Helsinki/ Otaniemi Campus and Mikkeli Campus) and the application period is March 16 April 6, The application form will be available during the application period on the website of (opintopolku.fi in Finnish). This Open University admission track is only for applicants 1. who have earned 60 open university credits from the courses listed on the next page by June 9, 2016 with a cumulative GPA equivalent to at least 3,0 on the Aalto University School of Business grading scale. The courses are part of the required courses of the B.Sc. degree of the Aalto University School of Business; and 2. who have received passing grades for studies amounting to no less than 36 of the 60 Open University credits described above in which the language of instruction was English. NOTE that the Open University track is not an option for students who have already earned a higher education degree or who have a valid right to study in Finland towards a degree at a university, at the National Defense University or at a polytechnic. 21 3 SAT Test 3.1 About the SAT Test The SAT Test is used by university admission officers in student selection and the test helps to compare the academic achievements of students from different schools. The SAT Test is organized by the College Board, which is an American organization founded by universities and colleges. The language of the SAT Test is English. The scoring of the test takes place in the USA. There is a fee for the SAT Test (approximately 93 USD outside of the USA). The payment includes a basic registration, reporting fee and an international processing fee. More information on the content of the SAT Test can be found on Registration, Test Dates and Locations The SAT Test is given all over the world on simultaneous test dates for which one must register by a certain date. Therefore, the registration date is extremely important. Please check the test dates with the test organizer nearest you. The test organizer in Finland is the League of Finnish- American Societies (SAYL). More information on the SAT Tests arranged in Finland is available on In all cases, the SAT test score report must be submitted to the Aalto University School of Business (code 1700) directly by the testing authority by June 15, In order to guarantee that the results will reach Aalto University School of Business by June 15, 2016, the SAT Test should be taken no later than May 7, 2016, for which one must register no later than April 8, Results from the SAT Test taken later than May 7, 2016 may not be available for the Aalto University School of Business by June 15, You can register for the SAT Test on or by completing a registration form.
