2 MS819 Papers of Terence Hutchison relating to his career Small collection of letters and other papers of Terence Wilmot Hutchison relating to his education, to his early career as a teacher, to his military service during the Second World War and to his subsequent academic career. This material is not a comprehensive series of papers and it consists almost exclusively of official or more formal documents such as letters of appointment, documents relating to salary and conditions of service, references, letters of congratulation. Some of the papers are quite miscellaneous and, for example, there is only one item relating to his education at Peterhouse College, Cambridge. The most interesting items relate to Hutchison's application for the Chair of Economics at the University of Birmingham: these include two letters of encouragement from Lance Beales, Reader in Economic History at the London School of Economics and, behind the scenes, encouragement from Professor W. H. B. Court, the economic historian at Birmingham. Administrative history: Terence Wilmot Hutchison ( ) was educated at Tonbridge School and Peterhouse College, Cambridge where he studied economics, graduating in Career Hutchison's first appointment was as Lector at the University of Bonn, and he was then appointed as Professor at the Teachers' Training College, Bagdad, During the Second World War, he served in the Indian Army, in intelligence, in the Middle East and India, and he was attached to Government of India, His subsequent academic appointments were as Lecturer, University College, Hull, 1

10 Department of Economics at Birmingham /1: Letter from Lance Beales, [Hugh Lancelot Beales, Reader in Economic History at the London School of Economics] written on airmail notepaper to Hutchison at Columbia University where he was Visiting Professor of Economics, 1954/55, concerning a discussion he had had with Court [Professor W. H. B. Court, the economic historian] concerning recruitment to the chair in Economics at the University of Birmingham. He outlines the progress in which he says Carter of Belfast [Charles Frederick Carter Professor of Applied Economics at Queen's, Belfast] has been offered but turned down the post, refers to the current staff including Gilbert Walker who is to take 'over the chair that J. G. Smith used to hold'. and encourages Hutchison to apply, emphasising that the 'thing is open' and that 'Court & Walker (who will mostly settle it) are attracted to the idea of you'. 15 August 1955 /2: Further letter from Lance Beales also on the subject of the chair at Birmingham in which he refers to enclosures and then he writes that 'I have told Court that I am trying to get at you again' and that he gathers that 'Carter of Belfast is too opulently salaried & too comfortable to be induced' and suggesting that Hutchison 'would be a 'favourite for 1st place', 23 September 1955 /3: Printed advertisement and further particulars for the Chair of Economics [enclosed by Beales with his letter of 23 September] /4: Letter from Professor W.
